Interest DaveP’s Luke RotJ V2 / Obi Wan ANH Motorised Stunt Prop-Replica Run (Sign Up Closed)

Hey everyone! I have been so excited for this project since it was first announced. I have been doing so much research, scheming, and day dreaming about when I could finally paint up my new props! So I'd really like to share my own ANH motorized stunt. This is one of the first props I've ever painted and weathered myself. I spent so much time looking at the on-set photos as well as the photos of the prop as it exists today to try and recreate the neck color the best I could.

I used Rustoleum black matte on the whole saber (only lightly on the neck), and then went in on top of the neck with light layers of brown, antique gold, another layer of black, another of brown, and then finally a very very light final misting of brown to simulate the overspray on the actual prop. After all of the painting, I went in with scotchbrite and a coin and started creating some light wear and chipping on the face of the emitter. I hope you like it!

I also had a question. I am about to start trying to stencil and paint my V2 with Dave's stencils that were sent in the kit. Does anyone have any tips and tricks for this? I didn't really see an explicit instruction manual, and this is my first time dealing with stencils. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey James. Awesome job on the Obi Stunt! It looks great!

For the ROTJ V2, there were a few tips on this post from a couple of weeks ago. Not sure if you saw it?

This collage in particular shows my method of working:

V2 Commissions.jpg

For the stencils, be sure to weed out the areas to be painted, leaving behind the bare metal parts. I know this sounds really obvious, but it's easy to get confused and find yourself weeding out the wrong bits! It is for me anyway! :D

I've found yellow frog tape to be perfect tack for lifting the stencils, and leaving behind on the metal. (y)

The stencils do leave behind some residue after removing. Once the paint is fully cured, I use WD40 and cotton pads/Q-tips to clean off any glue, being careful not to damage the painted areas. This process actually serves to soften the edges of the painted sections too though, making the whole thing look more naturally aged.

If you need a reference for the paint scheme, this turnaround should help:

There was a slight update to the stencils since this video was made (at G11), but it should still serve as a good guide for weeding. (y)

Here's a full resolution version of the guide that came with the kit too if you need it:

Wishing you the best of luck on your build! Can't wait to see how it goes! :)

All the best,

Dave

Incredible, Dave. This is super super helpful. Not sure how I missed this! Thanks for always being so accessible to the base. You're a treasure. I'll include another update once I get my Luke V2 painted up!

Hi Dave,
Any updates for the Obi Wan Stunt DIY kits?
Hi Flint.

We're just waiting to hear back from the manufacturer. I messaged roygilsing last week, and as soon as he hears anything back, I'll be straight on here to let everyone know.

As things stand with the kits, ALL DIY kits are boxed up and in storage (and have been for a while now), ready to send out as soon as the levers are added to the packages (which are open at one end).

Batch one of both V2 and Obi Stunt commissions are all finished apart from the clamps (which need the correct levers before being installed).

Batch two has been started and is well under way....
  • I've messaged everyone from Batch 2 to find out preferences for specific details (apologies if I haven't responded to replies yet!)
  • Batch 2 Parts are all prepared and checked over ready for painting.
  • Batch 2 Obi stunts are masked ready for painting on Monday! (y)
  • Batch 2 V2 Stencils are all cut and weeded out ready to apply (after A14 application)

Apologies again for lack of updates on here, and if I haven't responded to a direct message. When I have a list of practical tasks to get through, I make a point of trying to avoid sitting down at the computer. Hope you understand.

I'm working flat out on the commissions at the moment, and this second batch should be looking pretty good after this coming week.

If anyone still waiting on their DIY kit would like it to be sent out ahead of the levers, I'm happy to do that if you wouldn't mind covering the cost of a large letter to send the lever on later:
  • UK = £2.69 (Signed For 1st Class)
  • International = £4.20 (untracked / insured up to £20)
  • International = £9.75 (Tracked / Fully Insured)
Please just give me a shout if this is something that you'd like me to do, and I can get your Kit's shipped out straight away.

Thanks again for your patience and understanding everyone.

I WILL be posting an update for Batch 2 VERY soon with the usual pictures, etc. I'd just like to get the Obi stunts painted and the stencils applied to the V2s, which should hopefully be done this week. (y)

I do post brief updates on my Instagram from time to time if you don't mind the occasional picture of my kids :D

Anyway, thanks again everyone.

All the best,

Dave

**Pre-Update Update**....

Hi everyone. I've fallen a bit behind on messages I'm afraid. Sorry about that. Please bare with me. I will get up to date with DMs as soon as I can!

I now do all of my painting away from home in my mother in law's garage which is much better than my previous set up (and is heated! :)).

It does mean that I've been away from the computer, and masked up with gloves on for much of the time this past week.

I'll be posting a proper update soon to show where things are up to and looking forward to sharing my progress on this latest batch of commissions. :)

Just wanted to apologise to anyone waiting on a response in DMs...

I'll be getting up to date with everything later this evening (y)

Thanks for your patience everyone!

All the best,

Dave

Hey again everyone! I'm so excited to share the darkening I did on my Luke V2 saber. I used the Birchwood Casey aluminum black and tried to be very subtle with it. I wiped some on a paper towel and rubbed it all over section by section, and then immediately wiping it off with a clean paper towel. I did this a few times in each spot until I got the desired effect! Here it is, pictured with my Obi Wan motorized stunt. Thanks for letting me share!

**Update**

Hello there! I'm thinking you're all loooong overdue an update on the progress of the run...

I've been insanely busy working my way though batch 2 of both the V2s and the Obi Stunts.

Batch One have all been completed for some time now (apart from the levers of course):

The V2 at the front there is this idealised commission with no damage/A14. Really liked how this one turned out:

I just finished up the painting on batch two of the Obi Stunts. There are no Obi stunts in batch three, so this means ALL of the Obi stunts are now painted:

These still need a little tidying up around the clamp section, and the paint damage applying for those who have asked for it. Very happy with the neck sections though (y)

The V2's are well on their way too. The process of cutting and weeding the stencils is always a long and laborious task, but that's all done for this batch now and those that are not being darkened have had their stencils applied:

I'll be making a start on the emitter bending and pommel damage for the darkened commissions tomorrow, with a view to applying the A14 by the end of the week. So next week will be V2 painting week :)

This run has been an incredible amount of work for just one person, but I'm aware that it has been a long time for those who are waiting too, so I'm really very grateful for the patience that everyone has shown. As you know, there have been various delays as well as last minute revelations that impacted the design, pushing back the start of production. Everything is moving along now at a good pace though, and it's looking like the Levers could finally be arriving soon too!

You might have noticed that I have been selling a few items on the Junkyard. Currently, I'm in a situation where I have finished commissions, but am unable to ship, or take final payments until the levers arrive, so it was lucky that I was able to find a few vintage parts that I've been able to sell at a profit. It should see me get by until I can start shipping out commissions thankfully.

This is in no way Roy's fault. I can't stress that enough and I can assure you, we are both as frustrated as everyone else.

Apparently, there has been another Covid 19 lockdown through March that has affected the main manufacturing districts in China. This is why the replacement levers have taken so long.

That said, according to various news sources, this lockdown was lifted this week, so hopefully, things will be moving again now! They did have a lead time of March 25th anyway, but of course the lockdown may well have pushed it back a week or so.

I'd just like to reiterate my appreciation for the incredible patience you've all shown!

For all those waiting on DIY Kits, here's a little teaser, just to show that they really are ready and waiting! As soon as they're complete, they'll be on their way!

For now, I'll just keep working my way though everything, and I'll try to keep you all updated as often as I can. Please feel free to contact me should you have any concerns! And if you're on Instagram, I do post the occasional update on there too: DaveParkinArt

All the best, and as always, MTFBWY!

**UPDATE**

Hello there!! I'm guessing some of you have seen the announcement! :)

Roy's levers arrived this afternoon! I wanted to wait until they actually arrive before announcing anything here.

Well, they're here, and they're perfect. Very nice indeed!

I'm obviously going to get straight on with the job of getting outstanding kits shipped out to people, as well as installing clamps on to Batch 1 commissions.

This will not take long at all, so expect to receive a tracking number for DIY kits by the end of the week. (y)

I'll send out invoices for finished commissions once they're complete and packaged up ready to ship :)

I'm so incredibly grateful for the patience and understanding that everyone has shown! I can't thank you all enough!

Not long to go now! Batch 2 is nearing completion! I will post a separate update on that soon. All going well and should be moving on to batch 3 before too long.

In the meantime, here are some images of some finished commissions, complete with new lever:
