Re: QMx Sonic Screwdriver Thread

greatwazoo42 definitely said cheese whiz...:p

Off the shelf works for me. I have tried a number of crackle products over the years to get a cool finish on a couple props. I actually tried to get a custom lightsaber to have that finish, thought it would look cool...but all teh kinds I tried did not work out durably. So interested in this!

I hope QMx has firmer dates and everything by Dragon COn, really looking forward to their other products being promised!

Re: QMx Sonic Screwdriver Thread

At $200 or thereabouts its a no-brainer. Hopefully this is the first of many sonics from QMx.

It certainly would, at this point though they have yet to confirm that it will be at that price point. As per this post from themeinside

Hey guys-

I've just recieved a reply from an email I sent to QMX and have gained these answers.

No official price point, or release date, has been official released or confirmed by QMX.

They are dropping the vibrate function all together, and are going to put sound in the thing.

It would be pointless for them to make a sonic more than that as the MFX was a very slow seller at £250 and CT has the market cornered at the £200 mark. The only way for it to be successful is to be accurate, have sound, and come in at a $200 or lower price point.

Re: QMx Sonic Screwdriver Thread

I agree. Now they have been saying that at Dragon*Con they will have more information and other sonic screwdrivers to show off, so here is hoping some more details will follow in the next few weeks.

Re: QMx Sonic Screwdriver Thread

He employs a unique combination of crazy glue and irradiated cheeze whiz in a 403 step process. :lol

So THAT'S his brilliant scheme!!

That bit of silliness aside, if this is a QMX Screwdriver thread, should it include ALL QMX Screwdrivers? I recall seeing pictures of an Eleventh Doctor version at Dragon*Con.

Re: QMx Sonic Screwdriver Thread

Any new workd from QMx about the Tennent Screwdriver?
I was thinking of going for the one offered by Celestial Toystore, but if QMx can offer one that is more accuret with lights, sounds and that sweet little display stand - for around $200 then I would prefer to wait.
I'm new to Doctor Who props so can anyone tell me if the CT replicas are THE best anywhere?

I, for one, love my CT Sonic. I've done a review of it here: http://www.therpf.com/f9/my-new-ct-tennant-sonic-hd-video-pics-added-8-5-10-a-92659/
As far as whether it's the best, as for now, the only released product to compare it to is the MFX Sonic, and the CT is, hands down, FAR superior.
The QMx looks VERY nice and, if they can keep the quality at the same level as the prototype and manage to meet their target price, then I'm sure it would be the best bet. However, prototype quality doesn't always hold true through to production and price point almost never comes out a promised. Also, we still have no clue when it's supposed to go to production. The MFX took about two years from announcement to release, but hopefully QMx will be a little more efficient.

Re: QMx Sonic Screwdriver Thread

I suppose I have time to wait and see. I am unfortunately between jobs right now so my hobby spending is on the backburner until I can get myself back together - but I've been getting back into Doctor Who lately (with all my newfound time at home and a lot of watching BBC) so I'm pretty excited about getting my hands on a quality, accurate Tennent sonic.

The problems here are 2: 1) QMX's items tend to be prohibitively expensive when released, and 2) QMX is synonymous with the term "vaporware", i.e. products that are announced but then never released.

Go for the CT. It's the most accurate available, and you can actually BUY IT at an affordable price. For the reasons mentioned above, I'm not holding my breath for the QMX one. If I ever have the extra money available, I'll be picking up a CT one. :cool:thumbsup

Re: QMx Sonic Screwdriver Thread

This may be one of those props that is better suited to be made by hand by a fan rather than outsourced to china which is what Qmx will have to do - which means quality and accuracy will suffer.
I really like the display stand that Qmx has a prototype of - but you're probobly right, the CT version is available NOW and there is no second guessing the quality.

Re: QMx Sonic Screwdriver Thread

I got tons of pics of the 10th and 11th sonics at DC. I will try to remember to post pics tomorrow. They looked really pretty! I cannot make any claims about accuracy or availability, but they LOOKED really nice.

Ironic, as the most accurate sonic currently being produced for the fan market is made by hand in china. Go figure.

Would you be referring to the CT Screwdrivers?
I'm not bashing items made it china specifically, but any high-end collectible that is outsourced to some god forsaken factory where they really don't care about the item being manufactured.
In my experience in the hobby, the best, most accurate and quality prop replicas come from the independent artist/fan who has the love and passion to put the hard work and dedication into doing it right.
