Re: QMx Sonic Screwdriver Thread

If I bought the CT one ($325+$30 shipping) and then QMx released theirs at $150 (+shipping) I'd be rather annoyed. :confused ;)

I second that feeling!
But lets be honest, it's extremely doubtful that the QMx sonic will be under $200.
In this hobby, many pieces average at $250 anyway so I wouldn't mind it being at that price point either - so long as accuracy is second to none. Gotta have sound fx with that light.

Re: QMx Sonic Screwdriver Thread

From the conversation I overheard at the QMx booth at Dragon*Con, the sonic *should* fall between $200 and $300.

I won't buy from CT for personal reasons.

I've heard some mixed reviews regarding buyers' experience with CT - not really sure what that's all about but no one can deny the quality of the products offered by CT.

Re: QMx Sonic Screwdriver Thread

Eh, don't start that again. :p Go do some digging a few pages back. xD

Nice to see a full line of sonics being offered here. Am I the only one that would have preferred no sound? xD

Nah, I am with you. I think a prop replica is an exact copy of what the actor holds on screen. All of the bells and whistles make it an expensive toy. :lol

WTH, if it is accurite enough I guess we can take the batteries out :lol:lol:lol

Re: QMx Sonic Screwdriver Thread

I suppose there is no hurry to commit to a CT at the moment. Let me wait and see after the holidays where QMx is at with thier release and if we still don't have any new details on it I may bite the bullet and go for the CT.

I am not Dr watcher or collector but this line made me think.

There is always big talks about what a replica is. I collect Star Trek props. If they were exactly like those help by actors, they would look like crap! Not have any sounds, and more.

So what is a replica? I love all the back and forth amongst collectors, but what is "ACCURATE"? If it is exactly like what an actor holds, most of what I have seen in person looks quite bad compared to what guys on here make!!!!

I understand the thought behind that, and it is perfectly valid. For me, however, I see the lack of features on the on-set prop to me more a necessary concession that was made due to the way films are made, rather than a choice made by the prop makers. Take the Sonic Screwdriver, for instance: I'm sure the prop makers would have LOVED to have a little sound come from the thing... but then they'd have to deal with angry sound editors because that awesome little buzz gets recorded on set and messes up their ability to ADR.
I'm also less interested with the reality of my favorite props than I am with the fantasy of them. I would rather, for example, display a blade-less lightsaber and imagine that I could flick the activator switch and have a solid beam of light extend from it than to display a stunt-saber with a plexiglass rod covered in motion-tracking markers. The reality of it just isn't as fun to me. That MIGHT just mean that what I'm buying are expensive toys... but at 31 years old, I am totally not above pointing my Sonic Screwdriver at a Red Light for the one time in 20 that it changes as if I did it... so I guess I'm okay with expensive toys!

Again, not arguing with you at all... I totally understand your reasoning. Just showing you how I think about it!

I don't think there's a conflict in terms... A "replica of the prop" is a faithful reproduction of what was held in the hand of the actor. If there was no sound then there's no sound etc. A "replica of the item" is a faithful reproduction of what would have been held by the character.

In many cases I agree, I'd prefer a replica of the item as we see it in the show used by the character. For things like lightsabers though I'm all about the replica prop.

Re: QMx Sonic Screwdriver Thread

There is also the transition that has been happening in prop making in the industry over the last decade or so. Props used to be made lacking details or slapped together quick since shows were usually to be aired once or infrequently in syndication or to have a theater run and then gone so you only had the fleeting glimpses to go on.

Now with the advent and evolution of Beta, VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray, HiDef, Digital Copy and on the go watch it over and over again media props now have to be built to a higher standard simply because of the fact we can see every last little bit as often as we want.

Same here.

I'll only need it in time for Dragon*Con next year, so I can afford to wait. :)

All great points. I think "ACCURATE" is as close to what the actor holds warts and all on screen (that is why castings of screen used props are usually considered the holy grail). That does not mean that a replica that is close but not dead on is not also a cool item, just not accurate to what was on screen. I believe that most buyers (and we prop fanatics are not the full target market for any products) would not like a truly accurate prop as they are usually hand made under a time constraint and only as good as they need to be to look decent on screen. Not to even mention that usually "ACCURATE" is a moving target as things are repaired, repainted, parts replaced and swapped, etc...

To me, if you can hold your prop replica, compare it to screen caps and have a hard time telling it is not the one you are seeing on screen, that is "ACCURATE". Everything else is pretty much an interpretation on the theme.

We have already seen that given a script that calls for it they will happily paint the original screen used police box "PINK" without even so much as consulting us here on the RPF (the nerve of those prop guys :lol:lol:lol).

"ACCURATE" is entirely in the eye of the person buying the prop. Things that do not pass for even close to me might be just the thing that someone else feels just like what they saw in there favorite show.

Re: QMx Sonic Screwdriver Thread

Any body else waiting for the cancellation news. Several of QMX's announced product lines have been dropped recently. The stunt phaser looks to have been dropped due to them not being able to make it for the low price they stated and the Zat has been dropped because of spiralling costs too, and that started off very high. It's been months now without any news.

Re: QMx Sonic Screwdriver Thread

i seriously want this project to pan out well! i really want one of these!!

Re: QMx Sonic Screwdriver Thread

Hi everyone-

I am, at this very second, emailing a representative at QMX about the state of the sonic project- So far, all I have gleaned is that no price or release date has been confirmed- but I am persevering. If I find out anything, you guys will be first to know :D
