Harry Potter - Golden Snitch - DH version, Opening snitch modelling

it's almost too good

should we start a poll on how long it will take before some nut job tries and sells one on ebay as a screen used one?

lol

it took all of a week for someone to do that with hotshot's skele gro bottle before we busted him:cool

Yeah, I don't really see that happening, as the real one is on ebay for like 3000 lbs. And mine can still be ordered from shapeways for the normal price. I'd be a bit different if I'd made a certain amount for sale.

There are only 3 currently out in the wild, one is probably still shipping, and 1 is still in production. Looks like the total count on these might be low.

Thanks for the compliment though, this is really my first replica of an actual prop, and I'm glad to see it was a success.

The brass looks amazing, and everything looks like it fits perfectly. Will have to save up to get it :D

Hey there everyone, I'm giving notice that I will be pulling down the listing next month, it is after all, a limited run. There are currently about 10 snitches out there, so if you want to order yours, you will need to do so by the beginning of next month, July 4th weekend.

Ok guys, I received my cast brass snitch on friday, so here are some pics.

The halves come in nice cloth bags like this:

Here's how the pieces looked separated, there is some serious weight to them.

Assembly was a bit tricky, here's how I got them to mate:

Now bare with the pics as I couldn't keep my hands off it, and I haven't re-buffed since I had assembled, but here are some pics:

So, my horcrux ring is too fat to fit in it, so I've ordered a noble collection one, hopefully it will fit better, the metal just doesn't flex like the plastic, but here's the best shot:

Over the weekend, I finished 2 plastic snitches using acryllic paints and rub n' buff, here's how it turned out, Metal snitch in left, plastic snitch on right.

And to update you guys, I've finished my wedding boxes. Complete with snitch ring holders.

Finally, here is a video review of my metal snitch by me:

Please remember the deadline to place an order is quickly approaching.

Did you ever get to look at the mechanism for making the ring pop out of the snitch? I've been looking at this myself, and I have a shapeways order of my attempt on the way. Should be here tomorrow. I will post up pictures once I get it.

i did not figure out the mechanism to pop to ring out. but feel free to post your version here, i'd love to see it.

OK, I took a slightly different course for the opening than in the movies, for printability, but i think i prefer it anyway:

The 2 shells meet perfectly, there is a simple sliding hinge to make enough room for the shell to rotate inside the other:

inside there is a strut and channel with which i use to raise the ring inside, its raises about 4mm currently:

Here are some renders of the parts separated:

The only thing i think I will struggle with is the ring falling out of the holder, but surely sugru will fix that??

What do you think?

That's a clever mechanical design too! :thumbsup

Will your design be sized to accomodate the Noble Collection Horcrux Ring? Also, do you plan to refine the ridges and valleys on the Snitch's outer surface?

ATL

Unfortunately I do not currently have the Horcrux ring, but that is the idea. Does anyone on here have the measurements for the ring, height, width, depth?

It should fit, i used an image of the ring and i know mm width of the size 10 ring. using that i could find the dimensions although they are rough.

The ridges and valleys as good are as I need them already. The pics don't do it justice really.

I saw your updated mechanism on Monkey540's post and was wondering if you finished creating the golden snitch replica.

Wow, what is wrong with my alerts? I didn't see this post at all for some reason.
Firstly, I just wanted to say that I'm not a fan of the separation point. How is it easier to 3D print in that location? Considering the supports are in the same location, this is a curious cut point to me.

The hinge system looks interesting, it there a substantial difference in size of the halves? cause I would think the inner half is much smaller if I'm understanding correctly. I like the concept, and the channel and slider is a great idea for making the ring pop out. Great work so far.

Oh, here's something I just put together to help you with the dimensions of the Noble ring. I have been thinking I'd rather make a scaled to ring to fit inside the snitch rather than accommodating the noble ring as it's really VERY big.

Once again, it's looking very nice so far, btw, how did you print it?

I got it printed at Shapeways. I've actually changed the way it separates now so that the separation point is closer to the movie. I will post pics when I get back home. I'm much happier with it. Thanks for loading the ring image, that will help a lot.

What great work! I'm so gutted I've just discovered this and missed a opportunity to get one myself for my proposal to my girlfriend. How much was they going for? Suppose there's no chance getting my hands on one now right?
