Yeah I always thought the Sandtroopers/Snowtroopers/Scouts/Etc. were either just troopers with specialized training, or they all have that training and just put on the armor/equipment needed for the job. I've said this before on here, but every time I hear "Snowtroopers" I just get an image in my head of them sitting in their ready room:

Star Destroyer Comm: "Approaching Planet XYZ. Prepare to enter normal space."
Snowtroopers *looking like they are waiting on lottery numbers to come on TV* "Come on snow planet!"

Yep. I feel like they're all cross-trained in using all of the gear, but some do a deeper focus, like Incinerators, Scouts, or Sea Troopers, and that becomes their "thing". Any Stormtrooper force will likely need force recon and flamethrower troops, but the ones with the SCUBA kit are probably more like the Navy's SEALs, organized as a separate cadre and sent where needed in small, fast shuttles. Once they graduate from white armor to black, Stormtroopers seem to take on more of a spec-ops rôle. The Shadow Scouts work with Storm Commandos, Shadow Troopers seem to perform the same function outside of the ISB as Death Troopers do in.

But even there, even with the variety of mission-specific kit I posted previous, it still comes nowhere near the ridiculousness of the merchandise clone troopers' variants.

I gotta disagree. I love it. It's a bit Samurai, and medieval monk. Perfect for a fantasy group of religious warrior monks.
And Qui-Gon wears it the best.

And easy to make and Cosplay in!...
The Cops here in London didn't bat an eyelid even with our metal hilts on show...
It was either The Force or they just thought we were plain old Monks...

As I said waaaaaaaay upthread, different orders wear different habits. Benedictines, for instance, wear black. Black, brown, undyed/natural/off-white, white -- at least a monastic order wears one or more. Black with white, off-white with black, black with brown... So there may or may not be different "orders" within the Jedi. But black under off-black under brown is every bit as monastic as brown under natural/off-white under brown.

lucas has gone on record in filming ROTJ that lukes costume then was more like what the original jedi wore

here's from concept art of his setup

I've always loved this concept art. I agree that the Jedi 'uniform' should have been an approximation of this, sometimes combined with the vest and cloak that Luke wears. While the Tatooine-esque clothes the Jedi wear in the prequels have a lovely aesthetic and are quite well made with various fabrics and layering, they don't really fit within the context of the official roles Jedi Knights serve. As monks, sure they work. As warriors who wield a plasma sword, baggy sleeves and robes would not be the most practical thing to wear. The slim silhouetted attire Luke has would be much better and I think it looks better as it exudes the "adventurer" aesthetic. As diplomats, is it appropriate to show up to negotiations and council meetings wearing a hooded robe? Something along the lines of what Count Dooku wears would work much better. Capes and cloaks have formality not to mention are not as cumbersome as a robe is. I would still keep the traditional Jedi clothes we see but more for those who are older/"retired" knights rather than the "rank & file" ones.

I think the Clone Wars cartoon actually did a great job of giving the Jedi Knights a nice mix of old world, new world, and 'future' styling. Also, surely certain alien races might have their own cultural influences in their uniform which is fine. There can be variances.

I'll tell you another thing about this concept art. I love that Luke retains his blaster. I understand that Jedi Knights reach a point where they grow beyond the need for one but I'll be honest, I just love blasters and I think he looks cooler with it. Again, it exudes the adventurer look. Besides, even for a Jedi Knight, I'm sure a blaster would come in handy sometimes. That being said, I do agree with Luke not having one in ROTJ. 1. He never needs one. 2. It underscores how strong he's become with the force, calling back to Ben teaching him that lightsabers, not blasters, are the weapon of a Jedi Knight.

I saw his clothes in the BoBF. Not my thing but I appreciate them trying something different. They could've mixed in some lighter colors underneath and I think it would've looked great.

Didn't Luke Force-pull a blaster from a guard and aim it right before Jabba dropped him in the Rancor pit? I guess since R2 had the lightsaber, that was his only choice. Personally, I don't have a problem with a Jedi using a blaster.

Using a blaster is completely within the Jedi code. You just have to mumble something about it being uncivilized. Only then are you good.

BTW, in the Kenobi novel, I think he used a blaster to disguise a lightsaber wound he inflicted. THAT is what the tv show should be doing, but I'm guessing Tatooine is about to turn into one big lightsaber dueling arena.

I don't know the show needs to be doing that. In ANH Obi-Wan whips out his lightsaber in the Cantina without any thought of it.

I always kind of thought when Kenobi ignites that blade it’s the first time it was ignited since the clone wars

Kind of like how luke ignites anakins in the hut

I’m completely wrong with that now
