I can’t believe I’m doing this but lol...

I truly believe JJ had a plan for the ST. And I believe his mystery’s had answers... let’s not forget JJ wanted to do a Star Wars film since the 90s.. this isn’t something he was just thrown into

But not All things can be answered in a film...there just isn’t enough time

Like the lightsaber floating in space, burning up in the atmosphere and a alien then using it for a barbecue lighter.. (no joke that was one of the first ideas)

It then changed to a clan having the lightsaber and Max trying to get it before the knights of Ren

Again i agree, don’t think that needed to be explained, the lightsaber was found on cloud city and knowing how much money they are worth was taken and sold, passed down, stole or even given as a gift. That doesn’t need to be explained in the film.. here it is in a box to be passed down.. we saw that same exact thing in another film ;)

I 100% believe JJ’s original idea was Rey is Luke’s daughter. Simon Peg pretty much confirmed this.. so leaving her past alone wasn’t a mystery... also believe JJs idea was snoke was plaqueis... too many hints and he mentioned he wanted the ST to tie and connect to the PT.. (but now with RJ doing ep8 I don’t think it’s possible to continue this snoke idea)

And Rey being dropped off on Jakku was petty much answered as well... kylo Ren killed the students in the temple, he killed likes wife and couldn’t bring himself to kill little Rey who wasn’t just his cousin but a good friend.. so he mind erased her and dumped her on jakku.. if you look at the movie it pretty much sums it up...

“WHAT GIRL?!?!?”

“That lightsaber... it belongs to ME!!”

...think about it

I have a very good friend who blames JJ for everything, and though I am a HUGE JJ fan. I do agree his un answered mystery boxes don’t belong in Star Wars..

But I don’t see LOST questions in the ST not being answered.. I see a movie setting up characters and story.. (after it has copied most of the original trilogy’s ideas #reboot)

I do see Rian Johnson being lazy and ignorant. He was given a basic outline from JJ of who, what, when and where for the ST and to run with it

And instead of thinking up answers or flowing JJs idea he did the easiest thing and killed the characters off, or didn’t answer it at all.. gave us more questions really.. multi Rey in a cave? Wtf? More mystery box questions right?

I’m so tired of seeing people blame JJ and his mystery box idea ruining ep8... or the future of the ST. when I clearly don’t see TFA story ruining any of it.. that movie was to set everything up

Again.. I’m a huge JJ mystery box fan, LOST, Super 8, Cloverfield I’m a huge huge fan.. and I’m not defending or my opinion on TFA isn’t compromised Because I’m a fan of JJ..

I have more of a problem with TFA being a complete rip off of the OT then I do it being a giant mystery box..

I know TFA is a reboot, but I really like it. I liked luke pissed off with the world and going into exile. ( I do that on a monthly basis, lol ) I think daisy Ridley is gorgeous and did good job, Boyega did a phenomenal job.. I liked a lot of the stuff involved. We can’t blame JJ for killing off Han. Because ford said he’s only coming back if the character was killed and he never had to do another one.. we all know ford hates Star Wars and is embarrassed of that career move.. which doesn’t make any sense to me because I wonder if ford would be where he was today if he wasn’t in Star Wars?

Remember his acting in American graffiti.. ha

I’m tired of hearing the blame JJ for everything it’s his fault we didn’t get the lightsaber explained, it’s his fault we don’t know who’s Rey’s parents are, it’s his fault snoke is snoke.. it’s all his fault

And I can’t believe I’m agreeing with joker but yeah.. look at the OT... who the hell is emperor?

22 years before that was explained.. BUT did it ever really have to???

Not in the OT time.. here’s the emperor, he’s the big bad guy, so powerful he doesn’t need a lightsaber he shoots lighting out of his hands.. “well who is he?” “It doesn’t matter he’s the bad guy”

...wait a minute is that a 1980s Star Wars mystery box?!

In my eyes, giving rian Johnson total control was a idiot move, and it all comes down to failed leadership

Get KK the hell out of control.. bring in filoni!!! How many pieces of crap are going to be made before they do this.. ep9 will be a joke, Obi film.. we are gonna watch a man meditate in the desert for 19 years? Sounds fun...

Break is over, I gotta get back in the roof. Love ya guys

Holy moly! Who are you and what have you done with Halliwax!?  That has got to be the longest post you've done here! I love it!

I hear you brother! I'm not suggesting people have to hate the ST either, all I'm saying is can we all agree that things like Canto Bight are just awful? The cinematopgraohy in TLJ was really nice in some of the shots. Things like that. I find it better to praise what's great and acknowledge flaws were there clearly are some because to ignore them seems to ignore reality. At least to my mind that is a more honest and balanced position that to defend everything as if my life depends on it.

So a few thoughts for you.

For what it means, JJ said awhile back now, that what Rian did was very much in line with what he and Lawrence Kasdan were thinking. And most recently JJ said that TLJ "didn't derail anything." And Adam Driver has said that he's known from the beginning how Ben's story was going to end. Makes me think Snoke was always doomed to die.

Plus Snoke, unless they were going for some sort of essence transfer thing, couldn't be Plagueis. As Plagueis is, as dictated by George, of the Muun species. (San Hill from the Banking Clan is a Muun)

I think also that TFA was showing us that Rey was a nobody. Maz tells Rey that whomever she is waiting for is never coming back. And that belonging she seeks isn't behind but ahead. Plus there's the scene where Rey refuses to sell BB-8 for food. A droid she just met th day before. The way she's looks down at BB-8, it's almost like she's remembering how she was once sold.

But I do think that Rey and Ben have meet before. Just in another life.......

And then that scene where Ben says "That lightsaber it belongs to me!" I find it very interesting. Because as far as I can tell nobody from the OT gang has seen that lightsaber since ESB. And this is most certainly Ben's first time seeing it. So how does Ben recognize it? A real head scratcher that one is.

And then on the mystery box front. I get it when people say well mysteries haven't been really apart of Star Wars. And while that's somewhat true. We have to remember that we are talking about two very different filmmakers. George Lucas and JJ Abrams. It's like having someone who once owned a Ferrari. Then they a buy a Corvette, and they complain that the Corvette is nothing like their Ferrari. They may be both red, two door sports cars. But they are designed by different people and produced by different companies. So mystery boxes may not be real big deal in the old films. But George ain't making these films any more.

But yeah I'm like you, I kinda like the whole JJ mystery box thing.

The eternal struggle continues. What don't you like about Star Wars? I sincerely would like to know. Like if you could change an element what would you do diffferent?

So I gotta tell you why I like it first.;) So in The Art of The Force Awakens they have concept of this "exotic city" next to a sea. I absolutely fell in love with the look of it. It ended morphing in Takodana. But as soon as images of Canto Bight started surfacing I suddenly realized they had gone back and reworked the "exotic city." So I was in love with Canto Bight before the movie came out.

But some things I don't like.
The dialogue in the PT, particularly ATOC. So cringy...ugh. The poor acting in the PT. Leia's slave attire, was that really necessary George? I mean I get that she's supposed to be being humiliated, but it was so aimed at the young male fans. And I really dislike the sound design in the new films. It sounds to generic sci-fi to me. I don't know it just seems to be missing somthing. Well except Kylo's saber, that thing is sooooo sick!

"I wish I could put my fist through [that] whole lousy, beautiful town." ;)

Mmmm not exactly. I know we’re talking shades here and interpretations of statements but he said “the story that we started was allowed to continue [...] Episode 8 didn’t really derail anything.”.
Maybe just me but that doesn’t sound like Ep 8 was very much in line. Rian Johnson was reportedly given free reign, Daisy said that JJ’s ideas were replaced by Rian and we know that Luke was not going to be closed off from the Force (and consequently -and that’s pure speculation- potentially had another reasons to be on that island).

And Adam Driver has said that he's known from the beginning how Ben's story was going to end. Makes me think Snoke was always doomed to die.
See this is the thing, if JJ’s main idea was that the ST should be about Kylo Ren redeeming or ascending or dying thus ending the Skywalker bloodline or turning into a pink butterfly then Ep8 really didn’t derail it cuz they can still pull that off. If that’s the point for JJ then certainly believe that his story was allowed to continue.

Ah gosh...first world problems.
It’s the same kinda revisionism that Mark was trying to pull on chopping off the wampa’s arm cuz animal rights are trendy these days.

Now that I totally agree with. It’s all bleh...lasers, ships, blasters, even the graflex are just meh.

Going back to character writing and character interactions being so essential to the believability of your film and its universe, this has always been one of my favorite write-ups. While this is pre TLJ and specifically about Boba vs Phasma, it goes pretty in depth on subtle secondary character writing showing why a character from the OT works so much better than many of those in the ST, and how comparing characters like Boba vs Phasma or Palpatine vs Snoke is kinda like comparing apples and oranges when you really get into breaking them down.

We Need to Talk About Captain Phasma and Boba Fett

One of the strangest things for me when watching the OT even to this day (and specifically the theatrical editions without all the CGI garbage and other stuff that pulls me out of the film) is just how freaking immersive they are, even ROTJ with all its flaws. I don't really get that feeling that I'm actually watching a movie per se, more like when you're into a amazing book and completely forget about the world around you. I don't get that with the majority the PT, and not at all with the ST...

I stand corrected. I was going off of memory. I should have double checked the quote.

Here's a really great article talking about the transition from JJ to Rian.

Yes the dialog in AOTC and even some in ROTS was just cringe inducing, at times barf inducing. lol I love Leia's slave outfit. I just think it's a beautifully designed costume and hearkens back to some of the early storyboard / Flash Gordon style designs for the original film. I love Carrie Fisher and thought she was attractive but she was never a sex symbol for me, not the way other actresses were when I was growing up. Plus as you said it was meant to be humiliating for her character and it's not much different than some of the outfits that Natalie Portman wore as Padme in AOTC. Plus I don't think there is anything wrong with adding a little sex appeal to these movies as long as it's not too explicit which it never really was with Star Wars. I mean two characters kissing is the the Star Wars equivalent to a sex scene and I'm fine with the wholesome appeal of the films overall.

I agree with you about the sound design severely lacking in the ST. I think the key ingredient that's missing is Ben Burtt. Though Kylo's saber sounds and overall design are awesome to me too! I still contend that Kylo's TFA costume and saber are two of the coolest designs in the whole series. LOVE them!

I love Ewan, but he mistakenly also referred to the guard as a hilt, so there's that. I get what he was trying to say though.
