Here's my disclaimer again: It has its issues, but I like the ST, thus far.

None of that info you've included up there is in the movie. There's not even any mention of these experimental shields. I don't think anyone is expecting a full lesson on the "science" of it all in the movie itself, but if the details of the collision and why it was effective in the way that it was are that complex, they shouldn't be left to a supplementary explanation.

That said, personally, I thought it was beautifully done, as far as visuals go.

When I saw the shields on the Raddus. I immediately thought they were something extra. Particularly they way they hold up to the continual bombardment. So when I read the official explanation I was like "hey I guessed most of that sitting in the movie theater!"

So it's either arrogance or ineptness that Hux doesn't order a swarm of fighters or bombers to attack. Or for them to do a series of micro jumps, to surround the Resistance.
You’re patching up the script again for someone who hasn’t done their job.
So the Falcon can and does out run ISDs. And CR90 can as well. The only reason the Devistator is able to catch the Tantive IV is because they have to shut down the main reactor.
I might have seen a different movie but I don’t think the SDs in ANH or ESB had any trouble keeping up with the Falcon. They jumped to hyperspace in ANH to escape and were more manoeuvrable in ESB then hid in the asteroid field.
Fair point on the Tantive but the SD was still very much keeping up with them.

I really wonder how so many of us missed this obvious explanation.

I didn't even know the name of the ship. Do they even say it in the movie?

There was laser fire?

I was so checked out at that point I might as well have been asleep. To be fair I only saw the movie once (too many times).

I've largely tried to block it from memory.

Maybe I'm patching up the script. What can I say, I love ESB. Oh wait you're talking about TLJ.......

According to the reference books. The Falcon is 15 MGLT faster then an ISD. In the films it seems that ISDs are just as fast they don't seem to gain on them. The problem is that on both occasions you mentioned, the get cut off by 2 ISDs coming at them. However when they leave the asteroid field and are seen being pursued by the Avenger. It looks like the Falcon is slowly pulling ahead. Just not fast enough for their deflector shields.

The first thing I noticed about the Raddus and its shields. Is we are actually seeing them. The only other time I can think off when we actually see the shields appear on a ship, is with Anakin's N-1. The second thing that caught my attention, was how far away the shields sat from the hull. And thirdly the shields take a continual bombardment from the Supremacy for most of the film. So when Holdo slices and dices the ships, I guessed that the whitish streak that tears through everything, was energy from either the hyperdrive or the shield.

You think ESB'S script needs patching up and yet TLJ is perfect. That's rich.

Ten years from now very few will even remember that movie other than the way it turned most fans off whereas Empire has stood the test of time.

And where did I say TLJ script is perfect?

The fact that you think Empire needs fixing is certainly telling. Is it perfect? No, but it's about as perfect a movie as you could make. It's the benchmark by which other sequel films in similar genres are judged because it builds upon the ideas presented in the original and deepens them in a natural and meaningful way. The fact that you think it needs patching certainly makes me question your understanding of it.

I think you often feel the need to tear down the originals in order to justify the choices made in the new films.

I can acknowledge the shortcomings of the originals and often have laughed at them. Can you do the same for 8? I think the 40 plus year cultural impact alone says enough about the timeless themes those three little space movies had to justify their status as film classics.

Are the originals without flaws? No. But I'd argue that those flaws are negligible in comparison to the new films and time will be the ultimate judge on the impact these new installments have or not on the culture.

Ten years from now we won't see very many teenagers who grew up watching them and remembering Rose Tico fondly if at all.

And now you’re just redirecting the discussion to somewhere else trying to force through comparisons that aren’t similar.

According to the reference books.
Please, not again...

Both Tantive and Falcon were in clear peril in the movies when they were chased by the SDs.

When I was in high school I'd get flack for wearing Jimi Hendrix shirts (never got into the hair bands of the 80s). RATT, Quiet Riot, etc were supposedly REAL music and nobody would know who Hendrix was in 20 years.
Last month I had lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe sitting under Jimi's guitar while my daughter's band took the stage. (y)
I have a feeling the ST will drop off film radar faster than RATT dropped off the music radar. ;)
PS: no offense to RATT fans!

Congratulations on having an awesome daughter! That is so cool!

Yeah I think time will be the ultimate judge of these movies. Once the dust settles and enough time has passed we will see which ones stand and which ones fall.

My brain just took it as yet another unnecessary "Oooooohhhhhh isn't this a cool visual effect?!?! You can see the lasers impacting the shields!! We couldn't do this effect 30 years ago!" thing given all the other hollow meaningless CGI crap and shots shoved into the film just like the 3rd person perspective shots in hyperspace (or warp) that JJ loves shoving in our faces. Basically more flashy lights and dangling keys with no real substance targeted for the easily entertained. Not surprised they came up with some dumb backstory for it to explain why its never in any other film.. Tbh I absolutely hated that shield effect from the moment I saw it.

EDIT: Just for laugh's, and only taking what's actually in the film into account (No outside crap, I don't care about what book says what), is there anything at all in TLJ other than the stupid visual effect on the shield that would tell the audience that the shields on the Radis are somehow different or more improved than those we've seen before?
I really don't think there is, but again I've truly only been able to sit through the film 1.5x so please correct me if I'm mistaken

All the cross reference with LOTR made me think of this:
