ALIEN (1979) motion tracker questions

Re: ALIEN Motion Tracker Found Part Identified

Thanks for the kind words, all. Unnecessary but appreciated.

Oh.. BTW.. your avitar scares the S--T out of me. That guy did when i was a kid and still to this day.. Not sure what was worse the Kid catcher guy or the flying monkeys. Yikes. LOL

That's one of the first, if not the first avatar I used here. I found it recently. I'll have to see if I can find the GIF version I used to use. It's eyes move!

How'd you stumble across that?!

Nick

I'll write a note about this over the weekend when I have a little more time.

Re: ALIEN Motion Tracker Found Part Identified

So, I'll just start off the weekend by banging out the answer to how I found this thing.

Unfortunately, the answer is not very interesting. Like many "discoveries" I found this item while looking for something else. I was searching eBay for electronic parts and saw one of these things listed. Since I knew what the part looks like in the pics above, it caught my eye. Knowing that the only way to know if it was at least a contender for being the right part was to get it in my hands, I bought it. Fast forward to now when I finally had a chance to post it here for a consensus based on the images above. So, it was simply a happy accident.

Now someone please find the ice cube tray and CRT device. I'm sick of looking for those! :p

Re: ALIEN Motion Tracker Found Part Identified

Looks like the mesh inside might be the mesh used on the tracker as well. Seen at 1:44.

Re: ALIEN Motion Tracker Found Part Identified

Well, crap. Another piece I'll never get! :lol

Re: ALIEN Motion Tracker Found Part Identified

Sorry. I can't answer with any certainty because I don't have a whole receiver. I was lucky enough to pick up the scope as a separate part. I was willing to buy a receiver to check it out, but I got lucky.

On another note, it sure would be nice to have a circuit to make these work on a replica MT. :)

Any of the knobs/internals etc. look like they were used?

SAS

Where is this mesh found on the MT?

One of the pics of Bob Burns' tracker shows the scope operating just like in the video, that pic always kinda puzzled me before, so the original prop must have been hooked up.

Re: ALIEN Motion Tracker Found Part Identified

Which pic? Can you post it? I don't recall seeing it. Or maybe I just didn't notice the scope working. When I first saw the video showing it in action, it was immediately apparent to me why the part was selected. It seems like a
natural choice.

I'll bet that they spliced in some long wires and kept it hooked to the receiver.

I remember following the other motion tracker thread with interest and it's great to see the community come together and identify another long-lost part! Bravo! :thumbsup :cool

Re: ALIEN Motion Tracker Found Part Identified

Great find.....of course I need 3 of the for the ones I'm building. :(

Re: ALIEN Motion Tracker Found Part Identified

Oh, as far as ice cube trays go, I MIGHT have a solution very soon. I'll bump it up on the priority list now that this has been found.

Re: ALIEN Motion Tracker Found Part Identified

Post pics soon!

Does anyone have different or higher rez shots of the CRT screen area? showing the CRT screen area?

Flix4Me, out of curiosity... how much did you pay for that piece? I'm curious to compare it to the price these things will sell for from now on.

I got my Pioneer scope in today, but for some reason, I can't post pics. No service I use will let me upload. Grrrrrr.

Jonsey.....I paid the stupid amount of $100 for my scope, but that included the entire receiver. The guy wanted $175 for the whole thing, but I haggled him down. God forbid these people figure out that we're destroying these beautiful quad's for a silly scope piece.

On a side note, I'm pretty sure the the silver push buttons on the front of the receiver are the same parts that were used in this photo.

I'm referring to the four stem looking things next to the bracket. In all the top on photos I keep seeing a dimple in them, but in this photo I don't see it. They're pretty well spot on. If someone wants I can email them my crappy cell phone photos and they can post to see what I am talking about.

Actually I've read that these Pioneers were "interesting" pieces but with plenty of flaws, there is only a nostalgic/good-look value attached to them more than a monetary one. If they were top notch be sure they wouldn't sell for just $100-200 (anyone trying to sell them for more is really just "trying"). For us of course it's a big amount considering what we need out of it but for a 70's piece of audio equipment it's peanuts if you compare it with hi standard equipment of the time that still puts to shame a lot of newer models.

Guys now I want a $25 accurate replica of this piece with working lights, so get to work! lol
