ALIEN (1979) motion tracker questions

It's weird to spend $100 on a part, get it in the mail, and destroy it within a few hours. :)

Needless to say, I have the parts off the Pioneer under rubber right now, and I'll offer copies of the parts to whoever is interested. I didn't mold the entire scope, but I'll have a way to make replicas very easily.

Thanks to Birdie, by way of Shawn, I have the correct speaker grills, I've been able to locate a single gully cover (still need 2 more), I've had the other grill work laser cut thanks to some help from Birdie again...ok, I owe most of everything I know about this prop to him. I've also found the correct Vauxhall keys and sliders, and thanks to Stephen210, I have castings of the rectangular greblies. Oh, I have the right dial and base tv two.

I've scratch built the sensor do-hicky on the front, the plate with the aircraft lugs behind the gully cover. Right now all I have left to build are the oscillator cones, the viewfinders, the nozzles sticking out of the front and find the lights.

GREAT WORK, really excited to see this happen !
(Oh yes, Birdie is the man, his 2nd Motion Tracker is gorgeous, a GREAT replica !)

Iif need be I can mold up my gulley cover . Easy to repro in black resin. BTW the whole setup of the gulley cover and the prop mount that lies under it is steel wire tied to the tv box. just FYI. I can send pics if needed.

That'd be awesome if you're willing to mold your gully cover. I've been trying for a few weeks to get one from the source I got mine from, but they aren't responding in London for some reason. And yes.....I'd love pics. More and more pics are more and more better.

So here is the scope that I got in:

And it's now all torn apart and molded!!

WOW! I've missed all this until now. Great work, guys!

Birdie is doing/has done a second MT? I need to see it.

The going rate for the scope part seemed to be around $45, but I don't think they are available often.

Where's Funky? Now he has two ways to get a scope!

Flix....I meant to tell you thanks for outing this to us. I can't tell you how happy this makes me. I agree, I don't think that the scopes are particularly easy to get, but I have found one or two of the complete stereos in the $150-175 range.

Resin happiness:

DB, how are you planning to do the face of the scope? Solid? Opaque? Resin? Acrylic?

The complete units seem to have ranged from $75 and up to $200. But shipping is expensive for them. How much did yours weigh, DB?

The face will be laser cut out of clear acrylic and I think Richie is going to have a sticker made to go over it. The side clips will also be laser cut. Here is the thing though about the body. Home Depot has a piece of PVC tubing that is about 1/8" smaller than the diameter of the screen used piece. I'm going to use that for the other two MT's I'm building. To me it's not worth going that nuts over. I'm just tickled pink to have the bottom part cast.

I um.....didn't actually have the whole unit shipped to me. Ya know, restoring the um, one I have, I only needed the scope :)....so the guy was nice enough to bust it out of the unit and ship only that part to me. All I know is that the whole unit would have weighed a ton and cost a boat load to ship.

Excellent!

Will the faces you guys are making be undersized to accommodate the tube?

I had a thought that one semi-easy way to upsize the tube would be to glue a sheet of 1/16" material around its entire outside.

The face will be laser cut out of clear acrylic and I think Richie is going to have a sticker made to go over it.

Flix....I could. It's not a big deal to do that. If that is what people want, then that is what I can do. I thought about seeing if I could have a tube made to spec and then mold it, but if there isn't really any interest in that, I'm not sure it's worth the effort. Either way, I've cast up like 12 bottoms, and I have submitted an quote request for the other parts. Just gotta find the damned scanner to scan in the graphic to get replicated.

Whoa! I didn't mean to suggest that you sit there and glue the material onto 12 of these things. Folks that care to can do that themselves. :lol

LOL.....no, I meant that I could scale the faceplate down. I'm definitely not glueing up a bunch of these things :)

So I assembled one of these to see how it looks as a replica, and I'm pretty happy with it. The off the shelf PVC fixture is 1/10 of an inch smaller than the screen used piece. So I guess the question is...is there interest in some of these...and if so, can you guys live with a 1/10" difference?

I'll post pics later comparing the two.

Just a word about these buttons

Notice that they should be 5 and not 4.

Originally they were most likely 6 of them and one went missing.
