11th sonic progress (Update in 1st Post)

Re: 11th sonic progress

I'll post better pics later. But here's a quick teaser from my iphone.

This still needs a bit of work. I'm redoing the prongs. I've got to finish up the inner tube. I need to machine a new lens, I need to mill out the bottom bottom cap, and I might make the white faucet handle looking part (I accidentally machined this one a little short, although it does still match one of Nick's four sonics).

But one way or another, it's nice to see the whole thing starting to look the part.

I NEED IT!!!!!

Wow! That absolutely incredible. Are you sure you didn't steal that off the set?

If you ever need someone to hold onto it, for protection, I'll send you my address. :lol

Re: 11th sonic progress

VERY well done! It still boggles my mind on how complex this little prop is. No wonder it's taken so long for a decent, non-toy replica of it to make its appearence in our hobby...

Re: 11th sonic progress

I want one :lol

What is the deal with that top ring (brass looking part in photo 2), it almost looks like it was cast rather than machined :confused Is that a found part? Is that what I think it is :).

Just realized I missed this question. The top ring, like the side bars in this photo was printed in stainless steel. Then machined, sanded, and polished (which took literally weeks) Then plated. The reason why there's still the printing texture on the top is because it will be covered up by the aluminum slider, and I've already drove my self crazy enough getting everything else cleaned up. In this pic too, I had the part plated, but because there were some surface imperfections in the side bar that I couldn't live with, I had the part plated a second time. I know, I'm crazy:behave

The only part cnc'd on this prop so far is the aluminum slider. Everything else has been machined by hand, by me on a hobby lathe, cast, or rapid prototyped from shapeways.com

Re: 11th sonic progress

Can you post plans for us?

I can give you any specific dimensions you'd like to know. But I don't really have any blueprints that would help. IE no finished drawn up specs all neat and tidy like. Just numbers written on my wall like a proper crazy person:lol

As to things to go. I need to find someone to do a little milling work for me to get the cap to swing open and closed. I'm going to make another longer resin white part (I plan on using this one on my x-mas carol sonic).

I have made 4 new prongs, a little thinner then the ones shown here. I'm waiting on a new prong holder from shapeways in stainless. Tomorrow I'm going to make a new lens, and when the part from shapeways comes I will be fitting in the inner slider tube and wiring everything up to glow.

Re: 11th sonic progress (New Pics Pg 3!)

Excellent prototyping work Dan, can’t wait to get my hands on that one.

Re: 11th sonic progress (New Pics Pg 3!)

I have held te real prop and took measurements of the piece (which was damaged and the mechanism was locked) at the Cardiff convention. From the info and and sketches I drew of the inside mechanisms for the prop along with a year and a halfs worth screenshots of split second moments where the sonic is clearly visible...I can easily spot a few huge mistakes on this piece.
1) there is two emerald resin round bands inside the copper cage.
2) There is also a single copper brace that divides these two bands.
The button IS on one of the four props, but not this one. So put it in if you want.
3) using the Character Options toy is not a bad idea, it's an excellent outline for a replica, but don't copy the mechanism as the toy has flaws in itself. Don't use "Wow!stuff"s plastic cock of a sonic. It's worse than any 'replica' I have ever seen.
4) The emitter LED is all wrong (another one of CO's flaws). It is in fact FLAT at the top and a light and thicker emerald hue.
5) Just use a regular micro switch, it's what they use in the show
[thats it, PM me if you want any more info on the sonic.]

Re: 11th sonic progress (New Pics Pg 3!)

Thanks for the comments.
If you wouldn't mind sharing the info you have of the Cardiff expo sonic, I'm sure we'd all love to see the pics and measurements you were able to gather.

I am aware of points 1 and 2 and will be fixing that in the final build. This is just a place holder right now.
The way in which the emerald band's bulge seems to vary from one prop to another, and I was planning on making this build have less of a curve to the bands.

If you're referring to the the bottom button not being present on the Cardiff expo prop. That's interesting. Was there an opening and closing cap, but no button, or was the bottom part just a solid piece of copper like the x-mas carol shark bite sonic? Pics would help.

As to point 3. I am aware of the many of differences between the toy and prop and have been working hard to reproduce the original.

As to point 4. The lens that is in place on the build now is just a place holder I will be machining a new one to match the original.

It sure would be nice of you, if you could start your own thread, and post what you have illustrated above in this thread with pictures for other members to see so they may discus your findings openly.

Any information that you may have would be much appreciated by all the members of therpf. :thumbsup

Your points are well noted, and can been clearly seen if one is observant, however making a prototype of a very complicated prop that has under gone varied of prop changes over the episodes, and to incorporate them into a designe is in itself difucult, any prototype prop maker know that.
