WIP Cooper Star Destroyer with Fiber Optics

Nice work Barney!
Can you tell me do you glue the fibers from inside or outside the hull?
Also how do you trim the fibres flush?
When you paint the ship, how do you stop the paint covering the fiber ends?
Thanks

I belive you paint the ship/model and then cut the long fibers flush to the model.

I was going to do mine with Fo to but i guess you just raise the stakes :lol

Looking reaaaaallllyyy nice!

What kind of LEDs do you use and where can i get some? they look bright and wide angle... exactly what i've been looking for for this project and the NEd kit i'm building.

Barney, it was your build that finally inspired me to get an SD (after watching Eagles build and Vaderdarths) and have a go at lighting it with fibres. Now I'm not so sure!! Great build, keep it going. I hope my wiring is as tidy and neat as yours.

i have installed an aluminum U profile to prevent the front nose area from sagging

nearly finnished :)
going to finish some missing paint tomorrow and cutting all fibers to length.

it is really hard to capture in my photos. i have an old and really bad digi cam. it makes three glowing fibers into one :wacko

Is this model painted yet? It doesn't appear obvious to me.

Even if it isn't, it's looking great with those lights!

Couple of questions for you...
A) How do you keep the thing from melting, or do LEDs/fibers not produce that much heat?
B) In case there IS a danger of melting, is there an internal fan to exhaust the heat?
C) IF the model is painted or in a process of where it will be, have you considered weathering it? I've never seen used military planes and ships look pristine unless they've just left the factory/drydock or come back from being overhauled. "Pristine" just doesn't last longer than 5 minutes in the real world.

That's one of the legacies of Star Wars modeling. The weathered/used look.

It's an issue that also turned up in Star Trek circles after it became more obvious with higher-quality photos that there was weathering on the first two versions of the Enterprise (as used in the original TV series and first six motion pictures).

I won't ask about the price of the model since a link has been kindly provided in an earlier post.

The illusion of scale will be lost if weathering this particular model, weathering would no be seen at this scale. just a base color with some panelling will do the trick.

I didn't even do panelling on my own SD as Lorne Peterson told me that they really had none in ANH (tried to retro mine to ANH somewhat). He said they added slight panelling in ESB Just a very very slightly darker shade of white-gray.

For my model, the little raised squares all over the surface, cause enough mild shadowing when photographed or seen in person............sort of creates it's own panelling.

I can't remember who did the hull plating "panelling" on their SD that was so subdued, but that one looked the best to me. If it's too bold it makes it look like a model if you catch my drift?

Dave :)
