Amber lenses combined with bright lights would certainly give the perception of red lenses...gray would not. [/b]

coveralls_att1.jpg

Didn't I manage to show above that the grey lenses of the AT-AT driver could look red/amber?

I would have to say that from the comparison pic below grey seems to look right compared to red/amber. But Sithlords lenses while managing to capture the appearence seen on screen look more red to me than amber.

Known red lenses in the middle with grey lenses top right

JHVanOphem...just saw your new topic subtitle... :lol ...sorry, this has been the mother of all thread hi-jacks. Back on topic...*ahem*...helluva fine Hyperspace article. :D

Well we are talking about the article as it's the article that has brought new evidence to light in the form of a new colour pic which has made me question the colour of the lenses aswell as the revelation that Kermit Eller started hiding his features with black makeup.

Oh heck I don't mind. Information and civil discussion is always good.

I figured a change in the subtitle will let people know the conversation had taken a change.

Hey Tom, what helmet is this? Is it the SPFX? Very nice indeed :)
[/b]

Yes that's the first ESB helmet he made...

I finally got my Hyperspace renewed and had a chance to rwad the article. Very interesting read, some great pics that certainly change some opinions on the ANH suit.

Well the 501st Ohio Garrison XO recently got first hand confirmation from Don Bies that the ANH lenses were infact light grey. They had to adjust the lighting to compensate for DP's eyes being visable during filming.

Thoughts.........

Seems plausible. The light reflecting the skin would result in a reddish lense effect. Even with grey lenses as seen in the AT-AT example.

What great pics of your ANH helmet Sithlord. Its a fantastic looking helmet that captures the ANH look. :)

Carl

Here's an example of the dark amber color...

And here's an example with a dark orange color...with and without flash...identical helmet...

That's interesting

I posted this photo a good few months ago, and I've no idea what the consensus of opinion was regarding its origins, most likely a tour helmet??

Anyway IF it was cast directly from the screen used helmet you'd think the makers would want to produce something pretty much the same with the same colours and details, and they'd have the original in front of them for reference. This helmet is quoted in the auction blurb as having "pale amber eyepieces".

(Anyone know where it ended up?)

Sotheby's Film and Animation Art, London Tues 8th June 1993.
Lot 503.
A Darth Vader face mask from 'Star Wars'
1976

In black and grey painted fibreglass, pale amber eyepieces, elasticated backstrap, the interior with chalked number 3, 30cm; 12inches high, slight damage to cheek points and back.

Well if you go on the basis that "Tour" suits weren't produced until ESB then the lenses would have been amber/brown. Yes I know it has a small chin hole but the early ESB helmet(s) had ANH size chin holes.

I've no idea who owns that helmet.

....interesting paintjob on the forehead...half black, half gunmetal....never saw that before....
[/b]
Been thinking about this. On the picture of the screen used helmet there is a clear line on his brow, as if the two sides were painted unevenly with the grey color.

The thought I just had that if they painted the right side black (left side on picture) and then later reconsidered, they would have to paint it over and then perhaps over-applied the grey to hide the black, creating that line between the two halves. Though... never seeing that piece of the mask on screen at any time in the movie makes such an thought pretty stupid... I'll give you that. But who knows if this helmet below doesn't show how the ANH face was actually supposed to have been painted? Or maybe they just didn't have the original to use as reference when painting this face, doing it by memory... and I can tell you: your memory can play tricks on you... :lol

Sorry guys... I guess I was just grasping at straws... but interesting straws they were... :rolleyes

Bies joined LFL during ESB....I really doubt he's seen an original ANH.

That auction helmet is definitely a copy. Part of the giveaway is the mouth/chin screens (not accurate). I'm not sure why they did that paintwork as I don't think it's on the original. Check out the TIE fighter sequences when you can see higher up on the forehead....I looked before and I don't think I saw black paint there...
The presence of a velcro patch on the forehead also indicates it's post-1976.

I wish I knew who had this as well if it did come from 1976...but I'm almost of the view that it's more likely from just before ESB...although closer shots would help...

It's an interesting theory NHM, however it looks to me from the photo you posted that the line you mention might just be the shadow of a pillar or post standing between the helmet and possibly a skylight in the studio roof? .. Nothing wrong with grasping at straws though. any straws relating to Vader are interesting straws if you ask me, you've got to think outside the box sometimes even if it sounds wacky, you never know when it might just lead somewhere. :)

Thanks RKW and SL for your input on the Sotheby's auction helmet.
