1. Bring on Buggles.

Buggles is based on a design developed by Terryl Whitlatch, a concept artist on Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. She illustrated a creature called a voorpak, an eight-legged furball pet favored by Naboo aristocracy. Buggles may be a designer breed, as he is six-legged, not eight.

2. Name recognition.

4D-M1N’s name is based on the “leet” alphanumeric spelling of “ADMIN.”

3. Garma again!

Old Garma’s wave to Kaz may indicate she’s still charmed by the young pilot. She had recommended they room together back in “Fuel for the Fire.”

4. Introducing Namua and Jooks.

Some of the recurring background platformers get lines of dialog in this episode, revealing their names in the credits. The Nautolan is Namua, while the Theelin woman is Jooks.

5. Recognize that shuttle?

Commander Pyre uses a First Order Upsilon-class shuttle, the same model of shuttle used by Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.

6. Who’s in first?

The current standings seen on display leaderboard in the Ace’s lounge has Hype in the top spot, followed (in order) by Torra, Freya, Griff, and Bo.

7. Toy story.

Additional plush toys seen in Torra’s room this episode include a tauntaun and a puffer pig, among others.

8. Galactic gamers.

The Flight Simulator Squadron game that Torra and Kaz play is a cross between Asteroids and Dance Dance Revolution, with a space slug surprise thrown in for good measure. In the earliest premise for the episode, the game involved navigating “an Ewok through lasers fired by stormtroopers.”

I keep seeing more and more of these recorded on my DVR. Just can't hardly find myself bored enough to watch them.

I used to think “oh, this is just going to be an interesting footnote in Star Wars history”, and forget about it in a week.
But then Oscar Isaac and the Ridley Scott Alien style camera work showed up...
Now I don’t know about you guys, but that really helped legitimize the show for me.

Bucket’s List Extra: 11 Fun Facts from “Station Theta Black” – Star Wars Resistance
Learn which original trilogy sound effect can be heard in this episode and much more!

Bucket’s List Extra – “Station Theta Black”

1. You don’t assume too much.

The hazard screens aboard the Fireball display their information in the same typeface that Trade Federation computers use in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. As Kaz’s systems start failing, these screens blare “SYSTEM WARNING.”

2. Sculpting story.

Credited in this episode is Darren Marshall, who sculpted the character maquettes for the show. Not only were his maquettes used as guidelines for the final design sheets, but his sculptures were then 3D scanned and used as the basis of the actual show models. The first characters to go through this process were Poe and Leia.

3. Space jewelry!

In the show, General Leia Organa is wearing the same ring as in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Pictured above are Leia’s final jewelry designs for Resistance.

4. Not so unknown anymore.

The Unknown Regions are a huge expanse of uncharted space that lies beyond the Western Reaches. It is where the bulk of the First Order military forces are hiding from prying eyes prior to the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

5. Station Theta Black, inside and out.

As Art Director Amy Beth Christenson tells StarWars.com, there are several visuals on the exterior of the asteroid base to reinforce the story point that the asteroid has been mined completely. There are huge drills outside the base that have hollowed out the asteroid almost to a thin shell, while trench-like support structures have kept the asteroid from breaking apart. The interior of the base consists only of huge hangars for shipping the dedlanite and a few hallways leading to a command center.

station-theta-black-resistance-kaz-poe-1024x576.jpg

6. Duck saga.

Kaz frets that he and Poe may be “sitting ducks” — which is not the first mention of the animals in Star Wars. Captain Panaka worries about Queen Amidala’s ship being a sitting duck as it runs the Naboo blockade in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Many years before that, in the original novelization of the first Star Wars movie, Obi-Wan described to Luke that even a duck must be taught how to swim. Luke responded, “What’s a duck?”

station-theta-black-resistance-cb23-bb8-1024x576.jpg

7. A droid awakening.

Both CB-23 and BB-8 received their stylized visual cues from early concept art from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. CB’s flat-top head is taken from an unused movie concept, while BB’s larger head and eye proportions were from an earlier study, as well.

station-theta-black-resistance-first-order-sentry-droid-1024x576.jpg

8. Achievement unlocked.

The First Order sentry droid appears in the background of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but its fold-out weapons were specifically designed for this episode. Star Wars Battlefront II had the honors of revealing this design first, however, in December 2017 as an expansion to their game.

Chewbacca-1-23-dedlanite-666x1024.jpg

9. Dedlanite strikes back.

Dedlanite is a mineral found on different worlds scattered across the galaxy. It first appeared in the 2015 Marvel Comics mini-series Chewbacca, in the beetle caverns of Andelm IV.

station-theta-black-resistance-TIE-fighters-1024x576.jpg

10. Hyperdrive for all.

Hyperdrives are one of the few indicators of technological advancements in Star Wars. In the Republic, Jedi fighters needed external hyperdrive rings to jump to lightspeed. During the time of the Empire, though TIE fighters were still too small to carry hyperdrives, small rebel ships had them. Now, in the time of the First Order, Special Forces TIE fighters and TIEs meant to escort elite vessels can carry hyperdrives.

11. Searching sounds.

When Poe uses his scanners to search for any life-sign readings of Kaz in the asteroid debris, his instruments make the same sound that the snowspeeder looking for Luke Skywalker and Han Solo after a Hoth blizzard make in The Empire Strikes Back.

Why Star Wars Resistance Isn't Just For Kids, According To The Executive Producer

Why Star Wars Resistance Isn't Just For Kids, According To The Executive Producer

BY LAURA HURLEY
The Star Wars franchise may be between movies at the moment, but there is plenty of action from the galaxy far, far away available on the small screen. Star Wars Resistance is set in the sequel trilogy era, with the story picking up in the time shortly before the events of The Force Awakens.
As an animated show that airs on Disney Channel, Resistance at first glance might seem aimed just at kids.

Well, Star Wars Resistance executive producer Justin Ridge chatted with CinemaBlend ahead of the show's premiere, and he had this to say when I asked about the show tapping into a new generation of fans:

It's exciting, to tell you the truth. I think the show is fun because we're kind of giving a little more of a lighthearted tone. Because I think we definitely want younger audiences to really be into the show, but we definitely don't want to exclude the older fans. We want to stay true to Star Wars and what has come before us. So even though it's lighter in tone and has a little more comedy, we definitely have a lot in store that I think older fans are really going to enjoy.

Star Wars Resistance isn't the darkest Star Warsproject ever to premiere, and it's more family-friendly than the later seasons of both The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. That said, the lighthearted shenanigans that are sure to delight younger viewers aren't all that Resistance has going for it.

With the series picking up shortly before the events of The Force Awakens, the threat of the First Over has lingered over just about everything, and fans of the franchise know that something truly devastating is coming in the not-too-distant future thanks to Starkiller Base.

In fact, the midseason trailer that recently debuted indicates that General Hux will unleash Starkiller Base on the galaxy very soon in Resistance's timeline.

Even Rebels, which got fairly dark in its final seasons, didn't touch the actual Death Star!

Thanks to Kaz's status as a spy for the Resistance on Colossus, viewers have witnessed his efforts to help characters that we know and love from other Star Wars projects while still getting to know him and his new friends in some fun adventures.

There's plenty to smile about even as the threat of the First Order looms and characters are forced to deal with pasts that aren't necessarily chock full of laughs.

Resistance has the kind of substance that can appeal to viewers of all ages.

The combination of lightness and darkness also helps Resistance feel like it fits into the larger Star Wars universe. While installments such as Rogue One and later years of The Clone Wars weren't very light, most Star Wars projects have delivered some comedy to go with the action, adventures, and sometimes tragedies.

Like the TV shows that came before it, Resistanceexpands the Star Wars universe by covering a span of time that hasn't been tackled before since the Expanded Universe was discarded for new canon.

A big question moving forward is how Resistancewill maintain its tone for kids and adults alike as it moves into the Force Awakens timeline.

Star Wars fans have never had a TV show set during the events of the movies, as Clone Warsended ahead of Revenge of the Sith and Rebelsended before Rogue One and A New Hope. Resistance should be an adventure moving forward for audiences of all ages. That said, younger viewers may continue to outnumber older viewers due to the conception -- or misconception, in this case -- that animation is often just for kids.

Aside from Forces of Destiny, the Star Wars TV projects haven't felt absolutely 100% aimed at any single demographic, and until The Mandalorianand the Rogue One prequel premiere, all of the Star Wars TV shows will have been animated.

When I asked Justin Ridge for his thoughts on the misconception that Star Wars animation is just for kids, he told me this:

That's a battle that's gone on for a long time. I think a lot of people have viewed animation as a whole as something just for kids, which I disagree. Animation, I think even Brad Bird said, animation is a medium. It's not a genre. It's just a different way of telling these stories. So I think that's for people to just kind of accept and be like, 'We're telling really fun stories with these characters and it happens to be animation.' Hopefully they can get past the way that we're telling the story and just really get into it.

As Justin Ridge points out, animation is not exclusive to kids' programming. Anybody who has ever watched Family Guy or Rick and Morty can attest to that. Star Wars animation may get its unearned reputation as just for kids due to where the shows have aired and the simple fact that they're not live-action.

Airing on Cartoon Network, Disney XD, and Disney Channel may give the impression to some that only younger viewers can enjoy the content, which fans who have seen Ahsoka decapitating characters on Clone Wars, a major character tragically dying on Rebels, and what is surely to come on Resistance can attest is not true.

Justin Ridge also cites famed animation director Brad Bird's thoughts on animation. Bird shared his view on the subject in 2018 when he faced claims that Incredibles 2 is just a "kids movie."

Star Wars Resistance has actually been on winter hiatus since all the way back in early December, but Kaz and his friends will be back on the airwaves sooner rather than later. You can catch the midseason premiere on Sunday, January 13 at 10 p.m. ET on Disney Channel. Princess Leia, Poe Dameron, and more familiar faces from the movies will be interacting further with Resistance's original characters in the second half of Season 1, and there's no need to worry that the story will be done for good at the end of the season. Resistance has already been renewed for Season 2.

Star Wars Resistance has begun to heat up as its first season draws to a close! As we saw in that amazing mid-season trailer the series' timeline will soon intersect with that of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, undoubtedly having lasting consequences for Kazuda Xiono and his friends.
Sleemowe have just received our first look at plot synopsis for those final three episodes, which will air in March. You can read the synopsis below, but beware of minor SPOILERS:
  • “Descent” (Airing Sunday, March 3)
With secrets exposed, Yeager’s crew must evade relentless troopers hunting them down and find a way to reach the Resistance.

  • “No Escape, Part 1” (Airing Sunday, March 10)
Kaz, Neeku, Torra devise a plan to free their friends, but it’s upended when Kaz bears witness to the full might of the First Order.

  • “No Escape, Part 2” (Airing Sunday, March 17)
With Neeku’s help, Kaz comes up with a risky plan to rid the Colossus of the First Order once and for all.

I think it's safe to say we all have a very bad feeling about where this is going. For a "kids show" Star Wars Resistance is about to deal with some very heavy subject matter, the biggest of which will be the destruction Hosnian Prime, which just so happens to be the homewold of Kaz. It will be fascinating to watch and see how the events of the Sequel Trilogy will affect the story and characters of this series!

Just watched the last episode, I will refrain from any spoilers at this point. But I wanted to make some comments about the First Season.

I think the last half of the season was the payoff. It defiantly was more interesting once the initial setup was over and the First Order became more visible.

For me, real issue I have with the show was the whole racing aspect and the station.

It did not really see how racing played a factor in the story. When I first heard the premise, I thought that the crews would travel a racing circuit participating in different races. And that maybe one of the racers was an agent for the first order using the circuit to do things for the FO's needs. To me it does not make sense that you basically have an occasional race at the same place for often the same 4 or 5 racers. It's not like you had an influx of visitors coming to watch the race.

These racers served as the station's air security. I don't see why they just didn't have these pilots as hired security for the base and that was all they did. They could still be pilots that had their own unique looks and used their own unique ships.

I think they needed to play up the importance or the station and why it was important to the FO. The First Order wanted it for a refueling point for a war they were expecting to come. What made the station so important? I get the planet location was probably in a good location, but what about the station itself? Why not build and place their own station. I mean they are building big Star Destroyers and Star Killer base. Wouldn't a refueling station they could plop down in the ocean be easy? So who would even care about the Colossus being one the planet. They could put their station anywhere else on the water planet.
