New big-screen Star Wars Rey movie announced at SW Celebration 2023

Most of us, at this point, are just apathetic regarding current Star Wars, which is the worst position to find your fandom in, if you are Disney.

Apathy is the worst for an IP. Even hate is better since there is still such a thing as hate watching and it means the audience is still passionate about the IP.

I agree with most that I really dont follow Star Wars anymore. Didnt bother with the Acolyte and wont bother with the Rey film if it comes out (or any other new Star Wars films). I am more interested in how Disney is going to navigate Star Wars now and the state of the IP but the stories they tell dont interest me anymore.

I do wonder what the current fanbase of the new ST is like to be honest and if it is larger/more profitable than the OT/PT fanbase.

No effing way.

I know the ST has fans. But I woud bet a house that it never comes close to the Lucas-era fanbase, even accounting for population growth over the decades. Disney simply didn't make the creative investment it would take. They milked SW for short-term profits. They didn't put in the work & sacrifices to keep it healthy.

I agree. I really dont know what the ST fans like about the ST to be honest.

Acting is ok but I do think a movie needs to have a good story to remain iconic and the ST just doesnt. Nor does it have any really memorable scenes worthy of a rewatch like Lord of the Rings or Avengers. You can see they try to do it but it just falls flat.

There is always the nostalgia factor so maybe 10 years from now, the ST will be looked back upon as "underrated" and "overhated" by people who grew up with the films (which seems to be the case for PT and the Amazing Spider-man series) but this really is nostalgia googles. The PT was not a good trilogy with an interesting story that was poorly executed as was ASM.

Yeah, but the ST will forever be known for it's memorable lines:

Such as...

"No one's ever truly gone"

" See you around kid"

" That's a story for another time"

" Somehow...Palpatine returned"

And lastly but surely not least,

" I'm Rey...Rey Skywalker "

Lolololololol

lol. To be fair, those lines are kinda memorable in a bad way. There is also "they fly now", "thats not how the force works", and "Im all the jedi."

PT also had some meme lines like "I dont like sand" or "Hello there."

Although I agree with the premise, he lost me when he started cursing for no reason.

It does ram home his point though. He feels SW has been overly infantilized.

The opinion has been around since ROTJ came out. It has some merit.

Truth is, most franchises work that way to some extent. If the first two movies were good then you can expect the 3rd one to be a letdown. It's a combination of factors. The supply of good ideas is running down, while the public expectations & studio demands have been climbing higher.

I think the Star Wars OT would have been a much worse case of this (the 3rd movie letdown) if it wasn't for the circumstances. The first movie had been pretty throttled-back by the budget and VFX limits. ROTJ revisited a lot of the same stuff as ANH but they were able to go a whole notch bigger by 1983.

Interesting take.
This is a late reply but I finally got through watching this. Thanks for sharing. I agree with edge10 , Rob needs to tone down the F bombs, especially in a video about infantilization. I don't mind a bad word here and there but you gotta be tactful about it.

I don't disagree with Rob on any of his points about ROTJ. The only thing I'd say is I think it still amounts to a good movie despite its flaws. Not on the level of the Star Wars and ESB of course, but still good. Rob is a little frustrating to listen to though. He makes keen observations (hence the name of his show), and he's well read & well studied but, he shares that Cole Haddon article that offers up a preposterous theory on what the prequels should have been which could rival even the most terrible fan fiction. He's not the first to propose a love triangle between the three leads would have been preferable but too bad he's also not the next person to realize how much damage a story line like that would do to those characters and the saga.

Luke: "You told me Vader betrayed and murdered my father."

Obi-Wan: "Well, you see... it was easier than telling you your father was jealous because your mom had the hots for me."

C'mon, Rob.
