SirCharles77's Hasbro Millennium Falcon Conversion - COMPLETED!!!

Re: SirCharles77's Hasbro Millennium Falcon Conversion

Ok folks!! So several people have been asking for a set of panels for the Falcon and I am happy to announce that I am getting a set ready for you all. And here's the best part...you can have them for FREE!!!! I am asking for donations for my time if you are willing to donate to me via Paypal at charles@charlesranderson.com. But don't feel obliged to.

Basically I started tracing them out and realized that the amount of work that you will have to do after printing will still be pretty great. So charging money for them didn't seem right.

So here's where I am at. I have the first page which is the Top panels ready to be tested and I need some volunteers to download, print and test them out to make sure they are working for you. Give me any feedback you have to make them better or if any aren't fitting for you.

Essentially here is what I recommend

Download the .psd, .jpg, or ,tga file.
Open the .psd if you have photoshop and print it at 100% scale onto plain white paper at 8.5x11.
Cut out the panels and use them as templates on your styrene plastic or whatever plastic sheet you want to use. (I used the super thin for sale signs you can get at Home Depot or Lowes. Super cheap and the perfect thickness. Also easy to cut)
Then test fit it to your model.
I do recommend cutting them out on the outside of the black lines and then gently shaving off where need be after test fitting them to your model. As they have to be super precise when placed and it will be difficult to get it perfect on the first try.

That's it. Please let me know if you have any questions or any suggestions.

Also be aware that as of this post THIS VERSION IS MERELY IN ALPHA PHASE. Meaning that it is not complete (missing the bottom panels) and it is a first pass so if it doesn't fit perfectly that's why we are doing it this way.

Thanks for your patience and I hope these work out for you!

Here's the link to the files on my Dropbox. (please someone try this out and let me know if you can download these files.)

Re: SirCharles77's Hasbro Millennium Falcon Conversion

I havent even opened the box of mine yet but this is frikin awesome work. I had no problem downloading and opening the PSD file of the panel templates, and of course I will be wanting to get my hands on the other parts very soon. You are the man !

Edit: I printed out the page to check scale...perfect

Link worked for me too. That is insanely awesome of you SirCharles! I was considering making a template in Illustrator but I haven't had the time to start my Falcon yet. I also got the For Sale signs at Home Depot; they look perfect and they're cheap. Anything that saves time AND money is a godsend!

Re: SirCharles77's Hasbro Millennium Falcon Conversion

Hey Gang! So I posted the templates for the top earlier and I got one response that they tested them with success. I was hoping to get a couple more people to test them but wasn't sure if anyone has. Has anyone else tried them out?

I wanna make absolute sure that they are working correctly before doing the bottom panels.

Thanks everyone!

Re: SirCharles77's Hasbro Millennium Falcon Conversion

hi SirCharles,

i printed them off at work, and had to wait until i got home to try out the fit. i found them to be a little too small, so i tried scaling up the image in photoshop by 4mm, but they were still a little small.
it could have been my printer, or my settings, that were off?

Re: SirCharles77's Hasbro Millennium Falcon Conversion

I printed them on cardstock, cut some out for the test and they fit perfectly.
I also printed it on a A4 label that I'm going to stick on a "No bicycles" sign and cut them out.
Thanks for the templates.
Looking forward for the other side.

Re: SirCharles77's Hasbro Millennium Falcon Conversion

I get my Falcon tomorrow so will try the fit then. Many thanks for taking the time to get them done for the rest of us, saves more time to worry about the paint job!

Re: SirCharles77's Hasbro Millennium Falcon Conversion

Thanks so much for posting these! I have a hasbro that is waiting in the wings. Your thread has been an indispensable guide!

Re: SirCharles77's Hasbro Millennium Falcon Conversion

Has anyone had any luck getting Tamiya putty to stick to the Hasbro model? I have tried and it just keeps falling right off.

Re: SirCharles77's Hasbro Millennium Falcon Conversion

I had to use Bondo Putty, Tamiya wouldn't hold. Not sure about Milliput, maybe it will work too

Re: SirCharles77's Hasbro Millennium Falcon Conversion

I've used 3M Acryl-White Glazing putty on it and it has held okay. But that was on a sanded surface. I think putty on an untouched surface would not work so well... did you do any prep work on it first?

Note that Milliput is an epoxy putty so its adhesion depends purely on mechanical factors (i.e., it 'keys' into surface texture to hold) while Bondo and other 'lacquer' - aka 'cellulose' based putties actually can react with plastics to form a solvent weld effect (though PP plastic is more resistant than most...)

Regards, Robert

I did not prep the surface. What would I do to prep itime for tamiya putty? Or am I going to have to get some bondo?

Re: SirCharles77's Hasbro Millennium Falcon Conversion

Most any putty sticks better to a rougher surface. Plus, sanding will remove some of the oils... which are apparently an issue with PP plastic. Try it on an interior surface to see it if helps.

Re: SirCharles77's Hasbro Millennium Falcon Conversion

Question...for those of you who have already painted your Hasbro Falcon, or know how you plan to paint yours. I am curious when during the painting process you assembled the 2 halves and all of the parts you put on it?

I am torn if I should assemble it before priming and painting?

Or if I should prime and spray the parts, then assemble, then paint details?

Or if I should prime, spray, and paint details before assembling? Then just touch up after assembled?

Or some combination of these or if you have a better suggestion?

Thoughts?

Re: SirCharles77's Hasbro Millennium Falcon Conversion

While I haven't gotten around to looking at my X-Wing, let alone paint it, I would go prime, spray, and paint details before assembling and touch up afterwards as this would seem to be the least difficult as far as masking goes and then you're not handling something that is bulky and awkward.

Re: SirCharles77's Hasbro Millennium Falcon Conversion

Ok, well I have been a bit busy building a wall...literally I am building a retaining wall in my backyard and its been occupying pretty much all of my free time of late.

But I did manage to get in a bit of work on my next step this weekend!! Here is my paint scheme plans for how I am going to approach painting my Hasbro Falcon!! Let me know what you think!

Please, feel free to point out any mistakes, either missing steps in my process, missing panels or hash marks, etc.

Disclaimer on this...These are MY plans, not necessarily going to be 100% screen accurate. So use these as reference at your own risk. If you wanna use it as a starting point feel free but I recommend you look at all of the details relative to actual reference images before you consider this bible. Also, the exact colors I plan to use are still a bit TBD. I just tried to narrow it down to a few colors that I will fill in later as I go with the actual color I find I like.

I stopped before the weathering stage, as thats a TON more work to add to this and I honestly don't think it will be of any help. I plan to kinda wing that as I go just looking at reference and adjusting as I go.

Hope you enjoy! I am hoping to get a bunch of feedback from you all and update this again before considering it final!

Also one last thing...If you really wanna see the differences, I recommend you download these images to your computer and look at them in an image viewer like XnView so you can flip between them. Since I am one at a time layering on each step, when you flip you can really catch the differences. Especially important in the Light gray and Hash Mark stages.
