New model for OWK three holes saber... (New pics on pg 13. 11-17-2024)

Whether this happens or not, the AOTC version of the salt-shaker kit works perfectly well.

Aside from the very small, very specific asymmetries and whatnot (as well as the pommel cubes, brass valve shape, etc.) that are unique to the TPM hero, 99% of people wouldn't be able to tell them apart at first glance.

The chromed resin dummies may have been used more in the film, but the (apparently refurbished) TPM belt-hanger was used for the reference photos, and so represents the "real" saber.

Also, remember that the TPM resin dummies got more screentime in TPM than the metal hero, too.

It is funny and interesting what different versions of these props represent the "real" version of the saber.

Yeah, once you get into the weeds with these things, it gets very abstract.

The very best example is the Luke ROTJ saber. Is the "real" saber the V2, which appeared in 90% of the movie, the V1, which appeared in that one closeup, or the stunts, which account for the rest?

Nice.

Will Halliwax and Starkiller do a video comparing the EFX to the AS/Dewy:unsure:
It depends on if anyone we know who buys the EFX saber. I don't plan to get one myself, so we'll see what we see. (BTW-I mean no disrespect to EFX, I'm sure it will be awesome, I just generally only collect things I've built myself or things that were designed/built by friends)

I totally get that. I bought a number of MR sabers, back in the day, but I later built my own versions of those same props, and am way more attached to the ones I made with my own hands.

That's why I like to make kits for people to build, so that they have a sense of personal investment in the piece and a feeling like they made that, and it's awesome! It's such a great feeling when you know you built it yourself.

Unfortunately, it feels like the market for kits (or at least enough of a market to make small run's economically feasible) is being overwhelmed by a dirth of ready-to-display pro-built collectibles. People think "why should I have to pay, if I have to build it myself" instead of thinking "Oh, fun! I get a new project that I get to build myself."

There are pros and cons. Some people simply don't have the skillset/time/energy, and prefer something ready to go, like an MR or EFX.

Back when I bought my MRs, I never imagined that there would be so many kits/custom vendors around, and that I could build my own as I saw fit.

Back then, it was just Larbel and a handful of others.

We live in amazing times, considering all the vendors out there now, and the references/super-accurate replicas we're seeing.

...y'know, I think I'm gonna paint the pommel cube ring on my AOTC version of the kit black, to give the impression of separate cubes. The visible ring is accurate to the salt-shaker, but it kinda stands out on the AOTC.

A tiny accuracy mod.

It's also accurate to one of the salt shakers.

Hadn't noticed!

That again brings up the notion of which version of a particular prop is "real". One might commit to replicating a specific design, only to discover that there are multiple iterations of the same prop, with very slight differences between them!

Most casual fans just wan Obi-Wan's saber or Luke's saber or whatever. But, when you get into the weeds, just WHAT defines those sabers is pretty gosh-darn open to interpretation.

It took three attempts, but I got the pommel cube ring painted. Aluminum is tricky to paint, of course. Since I'd already polished the part, originally, I needed to scuff it up with sandpaper and steel wool to give it some bite.

Even so, there was still some chipping when the masking was removed.

For the third attempt, I gave the part a shot of adhesion promoter, then automotive primer, then the topcoat of satin Canyon Black (the same paint I used on the TPM saber).
