I was under the impression that Disney made back the initial $4 billion years ago, no? (Quick google search would seem to indicate it happened in 2018, unless I’m missing something here.)

I thought they've underperformed on everything except The Mandalorian. I know the merchandise and park stuff is floundering and Solo lost money. I think the Force Awakens was the highest performing thing Disney has done with Star Wars.

At least there's still Dune and Warhammer 40k franchises to still look forward to hopefully taking off in the TV and film medium. Disney seems content to hemorrhage money on Star Wars and at this point, I don't believe that they will even recoup their initial expenditure on the IP.

To be fair, I think Disney has technically recouped the cost of buying star wars. Getting more money from it (aka would they have done better had they spent their money on an alternative IP at the time) is unknown.

But yeah, i dont see the benefits lf having a rock. It seems to delve more into parody and a take that to fans than an honest attempt at a new story (unless the twist is the ship captain is crazy). It seems “geode” is sentient but cant move and is not a symbolic memorial but a character in itself. Most “rocks” in fiction at least have arms and legs so they can still do thinks like move on their own, pull levers, or do other things that require “fine motor control” skills.

i wouldnt mind speculation although. The people of this forum have such a greater appreciation for star wars and literature in general that its rewarding to read i comparison to other forums. I read someone’s critique of star wars and lucas (hated everything apart from ANH/ESB and Gary Kurtz) and his interpretations were painful.

That part is true, as far as I can remember (underperforming recent films versus previous films, I mean.) Mandalorian is obviously a big hit. But it’s the next few shows that I’ll be curious about- my sense is that they won’t all be as successful, as something like the baby yoda phenomenon isn’t something you can always recreate.

As for this rock character, I haven’t read the young adult book he’s apparently from, nor have I read any of the High Republic stuff- I’m still working my way through all of the old EU stuff...

But it does seem a bit much. I personally find it about as cringe-inducing as the space-cigarette-dealing “Elan Sleazebaggano,” or Chewie’s Tarzan impression in ROTJ. I can definitely say that it’d bother me more in a film, show, or adult novel.

I do like the idea of delving into alien races that are less humanoid (I always think of how old Star Trek episodes featured people basically just wearing some sort of mask to alter their faces. Star Wars does this too to a large extent.) For example, I thought that Rogue One’s “bor gullet” was pretty interesting as a concept, if totally underwhelming in execution. But a rock alien that looks like a rock and has a name that’s... a rock... really just makes me think they could’ve been more nuanced with it.

I'm also curious to see if "Geode" is ultimately the character that's talking trolling the person/people they're telling about Geode's life-cycle.

As for "the Rock" I have yet to hear any argument in his favor that's even remotely compelling. But that's just my take on it.

If someone enjoys a thing, they're under no obligation to defend it to you or anyone else. They can simply enjoy it. Just like how most rational people who don't like something will usually say, "Eh. Not for me.", and move on. Instead of harp on it constantly.

Yes, as I think was discussed in one of the Bond threads, life is a lot simpler if you just let people post about what they want to post about, and if you’d rather talk about something else, you can always try steering things in that direction.

Meanwhile.....

I’ll post this here rather than dredging up the TLJ post-release thread... (you’re welcome ;) )
It’s been a while since I watched the sequels, so I decided to try out the music-only audio track version of Last Jedi a few days ago. Has anyone else watched the movie like this? I found it to be a good way to focus on what I consider very good cinematography, without having to worry as much about some of the story... issues. Originally it was only available digitally, but I think it was included with subsequent disc releases, and definitely is on Disney+ under the “extras” section. Lots of stuff I didn’t recognize, probably because the effects have a tendency to drown things out at times. Made me interested in whether there are similar music-only audio tracks for the other films.

Eh, at the end of the day we're all just a group of nerds commenting on a forum. Whether we love the new content or hate it, we shouldn't take anything we say to each other personally. I'm sure if we were having these convos in person, we wouldn't be so serious about it. I take talking to you guys like I'm shooting the **** with friends.

It’s less hate and honestly more befuddlement. Geode according to pictures is a slab of rock that can’t talk. He is not so different to Wilson from cast away (although Wilson had a face).

For some reason this rock can fly a ship and will teach Jedi to have a broader view of the force so I’m assuming it flies the ship using the force. This raises the question of how since does the rock have midiclorians or a bloodstream to host them? If not, is midiclorians going to be retconned? People may like it but it would be another retconning of Lucas without his oversight.

I didn’t see much discussion on geode here to be honest. We all sort of said hey there is this rock character and started speculating about politics in Lucasfilm. I don’t know why we went back to geode but would rather speculate about Lucasfilm to be honest. Or maybe think about which shows will succeed, which may be dark horses, and which may be doomed to fail.

I certainly didn't mean to imply that anyone needs to defend themselves about the things they enjoy. Comments aimed at a franchise or a character in a franchise are NEVER designed to be taken personally.

Definitely amusement and befuddlement, no real hate at all. Totally agree (y)

I'm most interested in the Obi-Wan series...as long as it's more OT than PT and isn't ruined with an overabundance of fan service. I always wondered what he was up to on Tatooine prior to ANH. Would he have to have hid his abilities on Tatooine, would he have been forced to use them, who did he let in to his life and why. I have mixed feelings about another duel with Darth Vader, leaning more towards it being unnecessary.

Agree on the unnecessary although I kind of feel that Obi Wan’s story on tatooine is unnecessary. I like the character but his mission is to watch over and protect Luke. Maybe do small jobs here and there but he cant whip out his saber since thats just asking for trouble. Maybe some subtle force powers like mind tricks in every day life for a discount on that green milk.

I always imagined Obi Wan just watching over Luke, and taking the time in exile to reflect and get better attuned with the force, learning how to force ghost. His reflection on how he failed Anakin makes him a better teacher for when he is prepared to train Luke but he still isnt perfect (still focuses on being devoid of emotion and seeing the dark side as a one way path). It would not be popular with 99.9% of the viewers but Obi Wan just going over lore and the philosophy of the force would be interesting to me. Would be a better book than tv show though lol.

given the fanfare for Ashoka, im also expecting that to get eyes.

Honestly i would love to see the numbers for each show.

Based on this, it seems younger generations (18-38) are watching Disney (classic films, tv shows, etc) (hope Hunchback is getting some recognition since it was underrated). The older generation (39-73) is watching star wars and no one is watching Marvel (this was 2019 so Marvel also didnt have anything new worth watching). I wonder what slice of the pie Marvel is going to get but im guessing both. I also dont think the anime/new star wars stuff like high republic is going to get eyeballs with the boomer audience.

I haven't read the book so I can't fully talk about this rock character. But Kyber crystals are connected to the Force in strange ways. "The crystals exhibited a sort of "collective consciousness," verging on sentience, and could non-verbally communicate with both one another and living beings.[12] Some theorized that the permutations in the kyber lattice were comparable to emotional shifts in a sentient being.[2]"

So it's possible this creature is similar to Kyber crystals? We'll have to see.

We do know that Kyber crystals can and do call out to jedi and since everything is connected to the force, it does make sense that they can have some link. The crystals are also like the wands in harry potter in that the crystal chooses the jedi (althoigh Sith-made synthetic crystals are stronger so whats up with that?).

i do find that to be different from the crystals themselves being able to use the force though.

Disney decided to lovingly retcon SITH crystals, they aren't synthetic anymore. They're stolen Jedi Kyber crystals (from a Jedi the Sith has killed) that have been made to "bleed" through hate/anger/the dark side of the force turning them crimson red. A very difficult process...

I see. Seems to be kind of the same to the synthetic crystal process although this is more “tainting” the crystal as opposed to creating.

I honestly prefer the sythetic though because it keeps with the narrative that the Sith are the more entrepreneurial of the 2 sides. Its probably because they are power-hungry and freely break tradition while the jedi adhere to it but the Sith are always the ones inventing new stuff.

Everything about the lore of lightsaber crystals got thrown out the window with The Clone Wars.

I prefer the synthetic idea as well. Making them bleed could be improved if the explanation behind the nature of Kyber crystal was left as simply "alive in their own way." Sometimes it's better to leave certain things more ambiguous.

I hate that it's optical in any way. The whole notion of anything being focused through the crystal is... *sigh* There are many things wrong with that and I've ranted about it before, so...
