So I hope I don't open a can of worms.
If I do....Sorry I guess?
So last night I'm doing my workout and looking for something to watch. I decide to watch a review of TLJ that YouTube has been recommending for months and months and months.....and last night I capitulated and watched it.
During the review, I reminded of something I find rather interesting. Obviously many fans weren't too thrilled about Luke. But I was reminded that being frustrated with Rian or TLJ for this is misplaced. As Rian took the hand he was dealt with and wrote a Luke that could still be the hero. (8:30 is the timestamp for this part if you'd care to watch just that section.) If you don't care to watch it, I'll explain his thoughts.
The main reason Luke is on that island because he believes that he and Jedi are bad for the galaxy. He believes so strongly and he's closed himself off to the Force, and he scuttled his X-wing. If you take issue with this, then what's the alternative? TFA clearly set up that Luke had disappeared, and people were trying to find him. Given this, you have to ask yourself, 'why is Luke here?' He[Stephen] gives a couple of optional reasons.
1) is he hiding?
Obviously no, Luke is not a coward, and that is far more out of character. And what would he be hiding from, the First Order hadn't risen to prominence yet nor are they public yet, so he isn't hiding from them. So that doesn't work
2) is he just sad, bummed out about Kylo? That's part of the reason he's there. But if that were the only reason, having him sulk on that island without trying to do anything to correct it. That doesn't work either.
3) is he being held there against his will? That would make Luke out to be an incredibly weak Jedi. Plus he could have just telepathically asked Leia for help. So that doesn't work either.
So with those 3 things out of the way Luke must:
1)Be closed off from the Force. Or he would come off as seriously callous or cowardly, as he would have sensed the death of Han, and rise of the First Order, the destruction of Hosnian system. And to have Luke sensing those things and still not come and help or at a minimum call out to Leia and ask for a Star Wars Uber.
2) And he needs a really good reason to do that. And the only way that works is if he sees his use of the Force as a negative and his intervention on the behalf of the galaxy, also a negative.
So if you really have a problem with Luke in TLJ, your problem isn't with Rian and TLJ. It's with JJ Abrams, Lawrence Kasdan, Michael Arndt, and George Lucas. Your problem is with the decision to have Luke missing, at the beginning of this story. Rian was just given the responsibility of explaining why. Not an easy burden.
