Twitter is one of the worst things invented by humans. I honestly don't understand the appeal.
I used to see it that way too.
I also gladly deleted my Twitter and FB accounts. A full delete of my FB account actually felt awesome.
Social media is just another example of
why we can't have nice things, and why people in general
need to be governed.
With everything being so
volatile these days, I've learned to appreciate socials like Twitter as one of the best tools to flag haters and bullies. When discussing in person, most are okay with differences of opinion. There's always something to learn from that, if you're open-minded. It's those remotely sitting behind their devices, with the ability to block any confrontation with a simple click instead of embracing the challenges of a civilized discussion, who have fallen in lust with that ability, and have been abusing it ever since. Once you get passed the obnoxiousness and entitlements, and realize that these individuals are but a tiny portion of society, then in a silly way it becomes somewhat entertaining when you come across one of these extreme tweets. Once corporations start recognizing their actual significance and stop obeying to their
demands, then we'll begin to see real growth.
But this [current] mob mentality, and voluntary anger, and the Cancel Culture it promotes, is a next-gen cyclical trend that will eventually dissolve itself. And various consequences have already taken effect.
Get Woke, Go Broke has demonstrated a very real monetary effect, and is having a significantly negative impact on its most outspoken corporate supporters. Being in California we've seen this first hand. From pro sports to media to big brands. Although it's not one that has been most impacted,
Star Wars is one of them.
The overall sentiment toward the more recent projects such as TLJ and TROS has been Neutral at best. Recent characters developed with a
woke component like L3-37 from SOLO and Vice Admiral Holdo from TLJ have tracked overwhelmingly Negative in market research. I know people who've enjoyed those movies and those characters, but have admitted that their political undertones should have been omitted.
My belief is that this was a direct result of an internal consensus to pander to the
loud. Imposed by D|LFL creatives who are members of that same small
loud crowd. Focusing on misguided priorities, poorly conveying views that aren't easily compatible with the increasingly difficult task of entertaining paying fans.
I think D|LFL might be in the process of re-focusing their efforts and steer the ship back to a more traditional course. And with D being slow to react (it is a big, bloated corporate machine), maybe the ripple effect of that re-focus hasn't reached the Community Managers yet.
Let's see what the next few years will bring.
