Deprecated GOTG: Star Lord's Map Gun (done)

Re: Star Lord's Map Gun (run is GO)

Love love love the kit!! Im looking to smooth this bad boy out and this is my first time trying to do that to a 3D surface. Has anyone usedXTC-3D or a similar product? Im afraid to try the acetone method but I would welcome thoughts on that as well.

Talk about enthusiastic. : )

Start with 80 or 100 grit sanding paper. (You CAN actually smooth this using only sanding but it'll take longer. I've gotten glass-smooth results on things with large areas to smooth.) Then use any good spray filler-primer and sand that down. These prints are smooth enough that filler is enough even if you have to do a couple (or more) sprayings.

I don't recommend the acetone thing for PLA. While it DOES dissolve the surface, you risk making it more uneven. I haven't tried the XTC-stuff. To me it feels like overkill for this but maybe it's great, I don't know.

Use plexiglass cement (such as Acrifix 116) to glue this. It's MUCH MUCH better than superglue or epoxy because it works just like model glue on styrene, by "welding". (You DO have to glue raw plastic to raw plastic though.)

Going to try the sand primer method. Thanks!

Re: Star Lord's Map Gun (run is GO)

I was working on my kit over the weekend, I'm going to post a build up thread soon.
I've cleared a few things up with Joe about trimming certain parts and I've been taking photos as I go.

Star Lord's Map Gun (run is GO)

I used xtc on my one and the finish is almost perfect, slight sanding needed as it's impossible to get a dust free atmosphere and that stuff is sticky as hell and does take a while to cure however I love applying it to 3D prints, so easy :) just don't apply a lot of it, very thin layers over time does the trick. I want to paint my one soon and thought I'd post some photos from the film that I screen snapped (on my phone), if anyone has better please post and share your ideas for what colours of paint to use and lights to install. Let's get this finished up :) ImageUploadedByTapatalk1430157328.148595.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1430157336.879014.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1430157347.380560.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1430157354.531661.jpg

maybe someone might even go the distance and stick a mini projector in there?

Im tempted to try a laser pointer pen with a lens that you can place over the top that projects an image, I would go with the mini projector but I can't find one small enough that's under $100, the smaller they are the more expensive they are :(

Got mine today. Amazing craftsmanship crazy good 3D printer! just enough space to add my lights inside!

Any off-white should do as a base, then use "Tamiya nato black" on the grey parts. A laser pointer will probably work great in there. I don't know if I would try the projector myself... it IS tempting though!

Re: Star Lord's Map Gun (run is GO)

I'm adding 4 blue led and 8 red lasers that project a line. Think table saw line. My hope is that I can arrange them to look like a projected wall or building.

Sounds cool,
You'll have to post photos when you've made it.
How about having the lasers aligned to produce a circular outline, to make it seem it has locked onto the Orb whilst scanning?!

Great idea! I will mess about and see if I can make that happen.

Re: Star Lord's Map Gun (run is GO)

Definitely interested.

Sending you a PM with instructions.

Note: Since this isn't an interest thread any longer, anyone that wants one should send me a PM. The RPF sometimes doesn't send me notification of replies to this thread and I might miss you.

Thanks!

Re: Star Lord's Map Gun (run is GO)

Updated the first post. I'm glad to hear that kits have started to arrive and I can't wait to see what you all come up with! (I've started sanding my own kit but with having to break in a new sewing machine for the trench coat and modeling up more of Quill's gear I haven't had time for more.)

I am also accepting orders for new kits! Send me a PM titled "Map Gun" if you want one.

Thanks again for all the support folks!

Re: Star Lord's Map Gun (ACCEPTING ORDERS)

Well worth getting this kit.

Really nicely modeled and the separate parts in the kit makes the prep a lot easier prior to assembly and painting.
