Deprecated GOTG: Star Lord's Map Gun (done)

Re: Star Lord's Map Gun (ACCEPTING ORDERS)

This is the best 3D printed kit I've ever seen!

Joe, seriously well done. :thumbsup You have your printer calibrated to perfection and I love how you've separated out the pieces for us.

I've already started on some lighting ideas :cool

(change the quality to HD-1080p under the settings icon for better resolution)

I know I have the buttons in the wrong place. It's just a temporary set up until I get all the wiring figured out.

My next challenge is figuring out a way to fully illuminate the face and still allow the lasers to pass through. I'm looking into some EL tech. Also looking at some possible animation functions.

THANK YOU Jeremy! Those lighting ideas are looking fantastic. (I might try one of those pico projectors IF I can find one small enough.

I am still open to printing more of these kits. Get 'em while they're hot folks!

Looking awesome. What blue led is that your using?

Re: Star Lord's Map Gun (ACCEPTING ORDERS)

Joe has given me permission to post some progress pics in his thread. It's a very simple mod really!

All I used were 2 laser pointer pens with special caps that refract the beam:

First I had to mark where to drill:

I used a bit large enough to fit each of the pens and then I cut out the material in between:

For access to the buttons I cut out this square:

The buttons were still too far back so I broke off the pen clips and re-mounted them with some double sided foam sticky tape to align with the buttons:

Access granted:

I added a couple plastic pieces cut-to-fit, so I could more easily press the buttons:

Then I put a thin piece of foam over it:

The blue laser looks more purple on certain surfaces, but bright blue on most white materials. I like how it shines through the top clear piece as well:

I got a whole set of different laser caps that create different patterns. The patterns change too when you rotate the cap!

I'll put up another video showing the animation.

As for the front. The challenge is to let the lasers pass through, while still illuminating the face. The problem is that the screen needs to diffuse the light to illuminate, but also be crystal clear where the lasers are. I don't really like the look of the two holes in the front, so I'm still working on a solution to that.

I do have this EL sheet I'm going to experiment with. I'll keep y'all posted!

Loving the lighting ideas Soulinertia !

I've done some painting on my one but it being such a fresh prop I didn't really know where to start.. I finally ended up doing three offwhite paints (as people suggested) and some minor? Weathering, but I dunno if it looks good or not, I guess I'm quite happy with it? It's not finished yet but I can repaint it now before I get the clear coat on.
Any thoughts or suggestions on this would be great!

That looks great! For a second I almost thought it was the official Marvel photo and NOT because of my modeling work.

Haha, well your print is superb quality, let's not leave that out!

Yeah, sweet job on the weathering!

Thanks for the compliments, I have been staring at it for a few days thinking if I should change anything, possibly more weathering in places, grey shading on the black parts and ink all the lines. Will see how it goes and post if I do, but till then I guess it's onto the lights... loving your idea Soul with using the laser lens pens & button mod, just genius!

Still willing to make a few more of these. I also have a slightly oversized kit ready to let go. (Perfect if you want to add a mini-projector.)

I've been on the fence about this, but the simplicity of just throwing some lazer pointers in there sold me. I will shoot you a PM once I have enough pennies for this Joe!

Excellent, excellent, excellent work.

Got the kit today! Beautiful. My research continues for a micro pico LED projector with enough lumens to actually work at night. Doubt to get it to work at the cons due to the lighting.

Love to get one, just going to be a bit before I can do so. I am still working on the other prop finishing I have.....I am the slowest at getting things done.

Have I missed my chance to get one of your kits? Would to have one to add to my star lord costume I'm putting together. Let me know.

thanks
Brian.
