Interest Clan Saber Series #6: Darth Maul

Compared to the saberz replica made from the actual prop, yours seems to be slightly bigger. (I heard that saberz is Φ34.)

In addition, the following website states that the total length is 53.5 cm.

If you make it 97.14% of the original size, I think the total length and outer diameter will be accurate. What do you think?

I apologize if this is unnecessary advice...

I dont really believe the prop is 53.5cm or 21 inches long. Descriptions always round up or down. In that same post you can see the image where the hilt is longer than 21.5 inches

Here is another prop that is clearly more than 21 inches long (almost 22). It starts at about 4.25 and ends about 26" so its like ~21.75"

Sorry, i don't believe its smaller (shorter).

Regarding the diameter, I dont have the actual prop to measure it but using the above image I estimated it was close to 35mm. I wouln't dare use any other makers size as reference, even if they had an actual prop. So all i have is those images.

The prop image i used for reference is a cleaner cast which leads me to believe it's an earlier cast from the master, and as you know resin shrinks.
Not saying mine is the correct one, just saying how i came about the 35mm diameter. I have used this technique with all the clans I've made.

Here is a plo koon prop that was also casted and against the ruler it's also 35mm

Here are 2 more

And last but not least, the image from the prop you referenced. I wouldn't trust this one that much because its at an angle and not a top view like the plos. But its about the same

Another way to estimtate the diameters is to cut the image so that the ruler has an edge to edge disctance and we can use pixels.

Anyways thanks for sharing and I hope this clarifies where my measurements are comming from. I do understand that the diameter that i am using on the pics are closer to the camera than the rullers, but the focal distance seems far enough to neglect size changes.

I see!
Assuming the prop is made of epoxy, there could be up to about 3% shrinkage depending on the individual casting. So by that logic, something that originally measured 35mm could shrink to around 34mm.
It sounds like you measured a relatively clean casting of the prop—possibly an early copy—so the amount of shrinkage might have been minimal.
Did you measure the actual screen-used red and silver buttons?
If possible, I’d love to see a photo of the prop overlaid with your Maul for comparison.
Sorry for asking so many questions—I’m just really interested in this piece and can’t help being curious!

A prop maker by the name of Troy Sente sent me an original part that was used ot make the silver button. I 3d scanned it and adjusted my 3d model to match it. The red button I do not have an actual one but I was able to get the measurements from someone else.

It's going to be quite a challange to make an overlay, because of perspective, camera lense and focal lenght etc. In one view you will get it perfectly matched but in others not so much. This hilt is twice the size as a normal hilt so its even trickier to line it up properly. But ill try.

No need to apologize, this is great feedback to have.

Thank you!
Just one more question, if I may.
Do you have any plans to offer a battle-damaged part as an option in the future?
Of course, I know that’s just Master Replicas’ own interpretation—but I really love that design.
