Limited Run Dredd Lawgiver 2012 Full Electronics and Action

That was some update and certainly showed the pitfalls and obstacles you had to overcome in the last few weeks. This would have made a great documentary!

The dedication to perfection goes beyond belief.

On a final note - thanks Props3D again!

Big Update Time!

First off, where are we at? In case you're a TL;DR kinda cat I'll put the end first:

I have not been idle while dealing with the top coat debacle and I've been sanding, priming, and painting the nights away.

So here's the story:

Half the run got messed up because the new kind of flat top coat I used worked great when it was warm, but since it's 2022 it went from 40c to freezing and 100% humidity ALL the time, wth nature?? This weather is fine for a lot of my other top coats, but totally messes this stuff up (of course). So I sanded everything down and did it all again when the weather finally gave me a bit of a break, but it was an all day thing and when it cooled down in the evening it messed up some of them again, so 2 were good and 2 are not, so I had to redo them yet again.

I also did all the satin top coats and had a similar issue, so I realized this wasn't sustainable and I need to do a huge shop upgrade so I can switch my entire workflow to airbrush.

First thing to do was make sure my wife wouldn't talk to me for a week:
View attachment 1642535View attachment 1642536

This is a double win: First off, I can now airbrush inside where it's warm. And my resin printer enclosure can now also use the vent system to act like a mini drying room if I switch the hose over:
View attachment 1642540View attachment 1642539

I also bought two higher flow airbrushes to handle thicker primer and top coat (the two on the bottom):
View attachment 1642537

I decided to do the tops first because they're much easier to refinish and they also need to be the smoothest, here's the top coat contenders:

And the result showing the messed up one using my old top coat (left) the second best one (middle) and the absolute perfection that's the best one (right):

This is getting long so using 'one-two-skip-a-few' let's jump to present time:

I was going to take a bunch of pics of jds12 's but out of respect for his patience it's getting shipped asap, I didn't want to risk mucking about with it and causing further delays so it went straight in the box after curing.

As to the last 6 I have to do for the run: Toy Traders is a long standing friend and client of mine, you can see some of my work from Krull, Mandalorian, Beastmaster, etc in their cage at the back of the store. They've kindly let me do theirs last so I can do it as the video one, moving up the filming schedule at lot and allowing me to focus on the getting the last 5 (7~11) I have to do out the door asap. Out of prudence and the fact I'm taking the time to do these right I'm not giving an ETA aside from soon(ish).

But here's some pics to show you where we are:

This is all the parts for the last 5 in this pic:

Nice !

First the wife not speaking to you for a week made me laugh HARD!! Been there done that several times...L. But they are very understanding when the smoke clears and see the upside. Love all the info and great close pics of everything no detail was left out. I am sure those high volume airbrushes have started paying for themselves. Big thanks to you and the rest of the guys who made this run come to life pretty b@d@ss! RUN!! Man Toy Traders is one lucky person Karl Urban signed movie poster!! Just dang COOL!!

enterprise0216 'A week and counting' to be more specific ;). And thank you for the kind words, yours is the one above the 'E' in the pic below btw.

An addendum to yesterday's update addressing 2 points, one from a DM and one reminder:
20221127_174032a.jpg

First, THESE: I had a bit of a 'YIPE!' a few months ago when someone came by my shop to pick something up and saw a Lawgiver, they thought it was a real gun until I let them inspect it. DIY guns are a nono in Canada and I don't need my door kicked in by the police yet again. That got the wheels turning and the 'click' came when I saw a post on the Judge Dredd Costume Group on Facebook of Judges in parades and at events that these may be a little TOO real. So these orange tips are a freebee we're putting in every box to give you the option of being a little bit safer. There's a another group of Judge, Jury, and Executioners out there that may be a little fast to render a verdict. I'll leave it to you if you want to use it, but it's there. You can easily pop out the lens holder from the metal barrel and put it in this one if you want it as well.

Second, THIS ONE:

We're taking our time to get them right, and maybe taking a bit longer than we have to on things only we would notice (Craig and I had a Zoom call today for a mutual 'Do you think this is good enough?!?' ). So if you're ever in the state of "Just give it to me already!" This is a finished V3 ready to go at any time... hmmm... any Top Gear fans? Maybe this would be a clearer analogy:

I hate it which the spousal support unit refuses to communicate lol

However some folks here might not see that as a problem..... but I digress

Props3D thanks for including the orange barrel as freebies. You are also correct many folks rush to a verdict without all the facts. Also some conventions may require an orange tip helps place folks mind at ease. Also thanks for the heads up much appreciated. I am in no hurry for it b/c you can never rush greatness. Woot woot!!

Props3D has been nudging me to post another update for you guys.

Much like Chris, I've been struggling with the top coats as the weather continues to not cooperate with us. Both the humidity and cold wet weather has presented a speed bump in the process. In all our years of building, this problem is new to Chris and I and never had problems painting year round. Needless to say, we've got a plan to get the top coats finished up.

... and it started snowing this morning :|
1669674350126.png

Nonetheless, there's still lots to show you. I've been making progress on processing all the prints. Most of the sanding has been completed at this point with the exception of a few pieces in progress still. But they'll be in primer soon enough.

Some finished tops and silencers.

Bodies primed and ready for base coats:
1669674760210.png

Some smaller parts that have been top coated but need a little more attention include the orange barrels, mags, etc. These will need the top coats polished and refinished.
1669674894643.png
1669674918685.png

I've even dismantled my original V3 Lawgiver, posted on IG over a year ago, so I can update the paint and finish. I used a metallic oil rubbed bronze paint for my first one, but it will be getting the new paint scheme in the new year.
1669675797940.png

And as Chris said, we still have lots of work ahead to get everything finished and out the door, but we're making progress and can't wait for everyone to get their Lawgiver!

Reiteration on continuing the run: This is completely unsustainable for me to do ongoing. I make a fraction of my day job rate and I have 2 kids that need deserve attention, especially at this time of year.

As a one time thing this has been perfect: The money I've raised has been reinvested in my YouTube set for tutorials in the form of new lights, better cameras, better machining tools, and shop infrastructure. Since this is something I do for free it's very Zen for these two things to balance out. https://www.youtube.com/c/Props3D/about

I also have years of designs I want to release but I've been leery to do so with my sub-optimal setup. So the time spent on the run prevents me from releasing new models temporarily but will give me the leg up on quality to do the tutorial videos rights. My goal is to drop the models and the videos at the same time so you're able to build them as soon as you get the models. This next one up is a full electronic Mando blaster I did when S1 came out so the time's ticking on releasing it by S3.
20221129_093216.jpg

So I gotta keep a tight reign on this, I've calculated the run to raise just as much as I need and no more, not to mention creating a project to collaborate with two of the other best makers I know to form a project team. BeakZ is an amazing machinist and did all the metal parts for the run and there's no way I could have done half the cool features without Spidey74 's insane code wizardry.

As soon as I've done the last of my commitment to the run I'll be doing the videos and you can see just how much work this takes to finish at the level I've done for the run. If you're doing your own you have the option to just print and go, so it doesn't require a lot of post-processing if you don't want to.

And since this run thread is getting long, remember that all of this is free and open source for personal use: GitHub - Props3D/dredd-lawgiver

Rolling around this idea:

What if I made kits consisting of all the parts you need minus the FDM parts for something affordable? I bet I could buy the parts pretty cheap in bulk then part them out into kits with all the screws/wires/electronics/springs/etc as one complete set. I could also offer the more custom parts like metal barrels and resin sights etc, though that's just a thought. I've already sent raw parts kits to few people via DMs and Discord but it may be a thought to do that properly so you could just grab a kit and go. I bet it would be far cheaper for you to buy a kit and a 3D printer then just follow along and make your own than I could affordably offer these in future runs. (and obviously the option would be always there for you to source the parts yourself, they're all available easily using the parts list on Github)

I could make the videos far more detailed than I was planning to to show you all the tools and techniques using to prep and finish parts in a very step-by-step way.

Let me know thoughts, I'm getting ready to do the videos soon so this could affect my approach.

Hi Props3D, The kit idea and making it more affordable for those who have skill set and patience to build sound very cool. You have alot of files that you have shared that can be downloaded another huge gesture by you. Oh I just subscribed to your YouTube channel and will be watching all your videos. Expect to see a lot of thumbs up and viewer ship to climb! I agree Family is everything and having children that need and want attention/affection is a must. For any parent so I totally get that and understand. Look forward to seeing releases and tutorials. You are passionate about projects and the end goal is true. Build a quality working/static prop, share the build process, make tutorials to help anyone wanting to take a build on says it all in my eyes. The guy loves what he does and wants to share the knowledge to pass on to next builder and next generations of builders. You Sir along with BeakZ and Spidey74 are in that category of S.T.E.M. across the board!! Huge thanks to all involved as I mention before. I dropped the mic so many times I broke it…LOL!! Seriously you guy kick @$$.

Props3D Question...

How possible is it to add additional voice commands to the Lawgiver?

I was thinking it would be amazing to have an "Inspection Mode". If someone wanted to look at it like staff at a Comicon, a guest, etc... we know that when an unregistered user (non-judge) grabs one it explodes. What about a deactivated mode? Where it won't fire until it's "re-registered" but still stays lit up.

Not sure how easy it is to do after we receive these.

I was talking to a guy on Facebook who built an electronic Lawgiver and he had a brilliant idea along those lines: He had a magnet in his glove so it would only activate while he was holding it. I wouldn't personally do that to this model in a main release because then you would be required to have a glove to use it, and magnets and positioning are finicky, but it was an extremely cool idea and would be pretty easy to apply. There's space for a magnetic switch beside the battery if you ever wanted to go there.

Remember that's there's already an ID lockout in the Lawgiver when you get it, you have to hold the trigger when you turn it on or it hard locks. This was a simple and easy compromise I admit, but it's reliable and if you don't explain it so far it's confundalated 100% of the people I've tried it on.

Another thing about this and the other models being open source is that the sky's the limit conceptually. The code is all open source and the models are easy to edit so you can make it do whatever you want. One thing that added a huge amount of backend scope on this project is making everything modular and serviceable/swappable so it's dead easy to experiment with new ideas, add future upgrades, and replace damaged parts if something were to ever happen to it. So if you want to tinker with the code, go for it! We're all on Discord if you want to bat ideas around, invite link is on props3d.pro

Here's 3 other ideas I worked on that didn't make the final cut, just for fun (and maybe for inspiration for someone since the models still have the theoretical support for them):

MECHANICAL MAGAZINE ROUND CHANGER
Idea:
When I was originally creating the model I had included an automatic round changer in the magazine when you changed modes. It was based off a design that was tested but never used in the movie so I wanted to make it real. I wanted to use 3D printer belt running around the inside of the magazine with 4 magnets on it that would 'grab' each of the 3 stacks of ammo. As the the magnets passed over each stack magnets on the stack would try and grab them but only one stack could move at a time since there was only 1 space open. So in one 2 full belt rotations every stack would move one place, with one move per 2 'grabs'. (one move into place, then disconnect since it can't move further, quarter turn on belt, grab next one, move one place, repeat). The belt track was facing outwards so it would mesh with the motor in the frame when you inserted it, but it was designed to be screwed in place and not removable. There's still space in the model behind the magazine for the N20 drive motor.
20221203_104305.jpg

Movie Concept (uses friction):

Why not:
The complexity is huge on this, there's so many moving parts in such a small place I can see this failing unless well maintained. I still plan on doing this later but making it a separate model. It also needs a ton of hard to find parts so it just wasn't worth it, I'm still trying to make this project semi-accessible. Removable magazine is cool enough.

SOLINOID BLOWBACK
Idea:
I also designed and tinkered with solenoid blowback action to the slide when you fire. This proved to be crazy finicky in practice so it led to the 'cock to reload' action which is reliable, easy to build, and one more fun thing to play with. This is also why the slide has 2 steel guide rods if you're wondering why it's so overbuilt, this actually helps a lot to make the cocking action smooth so I left it in.
Why Not:
If it wasn't perfectly lubed it wouldn't work, it required a lot of very sudden power which was tricky, and finding an affordable solenoid with enough travel that runs off 5V was almost impossible.

EXTENDING SUPRESSOR
Idea:
This one was almost done, it wouldn't have been perfectly canon since the shape of the end of the barrel changes magically in the movie but you could add a 'cap' to the barrel to make it look correct. The barrel extended into the gun then a screw drive would 'push' the barrel forward to extend it making it look like it transformed into silent mode.
Why not:
After BeakZ designed a caddy to hold the electronics on the one he was building I was hooked on the idea. It solved a lot of problems of serviceability and assembly, but it also took up a ton of interior space. I was also having huge issues making the sound loud enough so that let me down the road of 2 36mm speakers (story in the build thread) fit into the top of the caddy that doubled the sound output. It became a 'would you rather' with a clear winner. It did lead me to creating the swappable barrel design and the removable suppressor that we included as a freebee in the run.

First, it’s off canon which we’ve tried to avoid as much as possible but It’s an interesting idea and something we could explore down the road.

A few considerations:
The VR module only supports 7 active commands. So you need to give up an ammo mode or use a different signal to deactivate the features ie using a long press of the fire trigger or reload mechanism. That Might interfere with the manual mode change - but it’s workable.
Also, What would the display look like? Stay the same? Have some indicator? The he more elaborate the more work it would be to code up.

From a background in LE and military it makes sense to me that the Judges likely wouldn't be repairing their own weapons. Someone obviously issues them and you would think fixes them, takes them back when they die, etc. Not to mention during the training, they would likely have had visual inspections. Might not be canon but I think definitely reasonable.

For the display if I was able to add this voice command, I think mirroring the "not registered" or on but not functioning display would show.

Unfortunately it sounds like there's quite a bit to this and not a simple programming thing that I might be able to do. Might have to fall back to turning it off then back on without the trigger pull and handing it to someone. The most impressive thing about this are the voice recognition commands. Was hoping I could make it work.

Sorry these pics are just taken with my phone under studio lights, meant to take nice ones but it's been a crunch time weekend and I want to get this posted before it's too late. Note that I'm doing a lot of parallel operations then when it gets to the finishing stage I'm doing them 1 by 1.

Here's a full state of the union on each of the remaining Lawgivers for my part of the run.
