Happy to start a thread here for a joint venture between BLACK SEA PROPS (Josh) and Gabe on a great project. We are pooling our respective talents to develop a great treat for all the FALLOUT fans out there: A high quality, CNC-machined aluminum (mostly, some other materials for parts like grips etc) AEP9 Laser Pistol from the FALLOUT series of games.

THE PLAN (current 16 AUG 24)

We are currently working to prototype out this item, and once we have will be pursuing permission from the rights holder to produce a very limited run. Until that has been secured, the run won't be green-lit. We won't be taking orders until that happens, and this is a strictly DEVELOPMENT THREAD.

SCOPE
A high quality prop kit featuring cnc machined aluminum parts, complimented by some nylon parts such as grips. Main objectives for development:

- Fully featured electronics package;
- Functional dials, levers, buttons etc. If it's modelled, it does something. No ornamental greeblies;
- Micro Fusion Cell that IS the power for the pistol (contains an 18650 cell);
- The same high quality, yet affordable items you've come to expect from the past BLACK SEA PROPS runs;
- Easy assembly, fiddly bits need not apply; and
- Guaranteed to put "lead in your pencil" when you open the box.

THE TEAM

Josh began producing prop items under the BLACK SEA PROPS brand in 2021. Having dealt primarily in the collector space of a popular space-themed television franchise, he is now branching out into other fandoms. One this project, he'll be lead on the design of machined and other physical components, along with prototyping work.

Some past work can be viewed here: Portfolio | Black Sea Props

Gabe has been in the prop collecting community for a long time and has been producing high quality, limited run, electronics kits for props for a good while. His most recent electronics kit run was for the LimeyBuilds SNW Phaser kit. On this project, he'll be handling the design, prototyping, and production of all electrical components and sub-assemblies.

CURRENT STATE

Right now modelling all the basic parts is almost complete, also engaged in subassemblies and moving parts. Prototyping of parts is being handled on a Bambulabs X1C, which in prior production runs has proven invaluable for rapid prototyping in an accurate manner. Parts are colour coded by production method and material:

- Grey (CNC Machined Aluminum)
- Black (FDM Printed PETG or TPU)
- Brown (SLS Nylon or ABS Resin)
- Green (circuit board)

Here are some photos of prototype parts as well as an overall render of the current (WIP) state:

Really in the home stretch on the major components now with work underway on the muzzle (muzzle base installed, more to come) and internal mechanisms.

2nd and 3rd photos are showing the internal structure of the breech/receiver block and the laser module mounting adapter. These two parts allow for a very sturdy way of securing the rear end of the laser module as well the adapter serves as a mounting point for the micro fusion cell retaining lever

Putting the current printed laser pistol prototype aside as the "mk1". The rapid pace of iteration on this has changed enough parts that it's best to just start with a mk2 and move forward. I'll save it for comparison photos later.
New mk2 furniture set in 12hrs!

MicroFusion Cell (Battery) mounting hardware is working great, onto tweaking the retention lever and then show it off functioning.

Redesigned the pistol grip and base, now the snakeeye greeblies are functional and are a retaining bolt that holds the grip base onto the pistol grip.

Disassembled (potentially space for a tool kit inside???)

Inside the end cap looking at the positive electrical connection. A backplane will fit in here for the main circuit board.

Inside the "laser module adapter" which is where a lot of the moving bits come together, as well as the mounting location for the retention lever and negative battery connector.

Went a bit dark on this one, apologies!

This has definitely been a marathon of a project vs a sprint! Interesting to compare progress the last five months from August (Left) to today (right).
Also a detail look at the receiver switch assembly, as well as an overhead shot with some details of the muzzle and laser unit shield assembly.
