1:1 Wall-E Build - 2014 Halloween Appearance

Re: 1:1 Wall-E Build (WIP) - The Tread Adventure Continues...

UGH... those treads must be killing ya! But they look awesome! Are you going to add the details underneath? Details details details... ;)

Re: 1:1 Wall-E Build (WIP) - The Tread Adventure Continues...

OMG I want this. Another build I wish I had the patience to take on. Amazing work so far and A+ on the dedication.
Thank you for the kind words. I can't believe I've been at this project for five months -I thought I'd be done in 4 weeks ;)

I've been debating with myself on whether to include the tread details. Short version, yup -they're so much a part of the iconic look that I can't leave them out (sigh).

Fortunately, the hardest part of doing the treads is behind me. The primary reason for the build slow-down is I got "volunteered" to build a prop jukebox for my daughter's 5th grade class musical. First I created a 6" mockup

and now I'm working on the full-size version:

I'm hoping to squeeze in a little Wall-E time tomorrow (Monday). If I just hadn't lost four hours to raking leaves yesterday… ;)

More to come...

That's cool - what are you cutting into? Foam?

It's housing insulation -I built my first Ghostbusters Proton Pack from it ;)

Easy to cut, easy to sand. It has to be sealed if you're going to spray paint it but it's great for moving fast. I pick it up at Home Depot, a 4' x 8' sheet is about $12.

Owens Corning FOAMULAR 1/2 in. x 48 in. x 96 in. Squared Edge Insulating Sheathing-36L at The Home Depot

I try to wear a dust mask when cutting or sanding it, the stuff gets everywhere...

"I don't know doctor, he seemed perfectly fine and then he freaked out. I have no idea what could have caused it…"

Creating the tread pattern is an exercise in insanity. Here's the process:

Cut LOTS of .25" x 1.5" wood strips (a great way to use lots of scrap MDF)

Hand sand each of them, then primer and paint

Then, using a paint brush, apply wood glue to the back of each strip and position it on the tread

Then realize that 125 pieces is not enough to complete even one tread

That said, I am definitely loving how these are coming out. Back to the band saw to make more pieces.

More to come...

Absolutely love how much work you've put in and the results, Godspeed sir!

WOW! I feel your pain... The treads are looking great... :)

Thanks. I have no doubt you can empathize ;)

More tread work….

Oh the monotony!

Consider me a fan of this build.

However, seeing how much work you put into this, and how long this takes to progress (I'm not a patient guy), it kinda puts me off trying one of these myself. (I also don't have a garage to work in or a scroll saw, drill press, belt sander, etc... geez, I'm really ill-equipped to do any of this prop stuff, aren't I? lol)

Keep up the good work!

LOL -it's all for the greater good.

Thanks, but don't let my efforts discourage you from giving it a go. This really should have gone a lot faster, I've had real-life (and other projects) cause the project to go a little longer than expected.

I think this would be a perfect project to do with foam board -all you need is about $50 in foam board, a box cutter and lots of blades, a cutting mat, white glue and acrylic paint.

A little more progress, the first tread is complete and attached to the gears and tensioners:

The other tread has the additional tread details glued on and is drying -we just might see a fully assembled Wall-E later today!

More to come...

Patient and detailed. That's what make you a good builder, Sir! Outstanding work! :)

Impressive :cool
Thank you!

High praise, thank you very much (and keep your build coming, I'm loving your R2).

Wall-E's fully assembled. There's some detail work that needs to be done and his hands need to be redone (they keep breaking -I'll use the same technique for his fingers as I did for the treads to make them more robust). All that said, the critical stuff has been done and I'm ready to take a break.

To answer a couple questions asked about his dimensions, here we go:

  • Measuring from tread-to-tread, his width is 45"
  • With neck fully extended and the head tilted level, his height is 38"
  • Excluding the reach of his arms, his depth is 26"
  • He's heavy, I'd guess between 75 and 90 lbs

Here's his hands after the touch-up work:

and a few beauty shots now that he's complete:
