For the past month I've been working on this small project of mine that I feel is now at a stage in which I'm comfortable sharing my progress. My plan for this project is to have a cleaned up version of a gremlins 1 mogwai, following the original very closely, with a few differences:
After the casting arrived I took a lot of dimensions down of the casting and started on designing a model as a prototype to add fur to and test how the later revisions could be assembled.
Below was the first part printed for this project, which was of an unfinished model of the face and printed to make sure I was on the right track.
Below is the prototype body in the sort of "T" pose stance the original casting came in. I'm thinking of casting these in a foam eventually so that I can either cut and shape the body into my preferred pose or use flexible foam with an armature to bend the body but unsure if fur can be bonded easily to flexing foam and how well it'd stick overtime.
I haven't started sculpting in wrinkles etc, hence the smoothed out features.
My plan for the head is to make eyelids, mouth/nose and ears in either silicone, flexible polyurethane or foam latex but unsure of which at the moment. however have designed the current design to facilitate those parts to be in such a material though haven't ever cast flexible parts so don't fully knows how they'll behave.
I also need to figure out if the sculpt changed or not for stripe or gizmo on the face.
Finally below is the printed prototype awaiting fur compared to the original casting I bought. I couldn't find any fur at all down under that matches what was used in the film so it'll be a bit of a waiting game before I get it from China. If anyone knows anywhere I could get some in Aus that'd be greatly appreciated.
The eyes are currently semi-spheres but I'm planning to use Gary Willetts technique for pupils when I get to that stage.
What needs to be done:
This is my first time building any sort of creature creation so any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated, Thanks for taking the time to read.
- cleaned up hands and feet (more on that later)
- face brought closer to the close up version (without going overboard)
- ears made symmetrical (personal preference)

- Finish "prototype" model to ensure everything looks as it should.
- Figure out what materials to use on the final (as well as what to use to mould them).
