Tron Legacy Costume

does anyone know how well reflective tape sticks to fabric? I want to put some on my outfit but not have to buy the sew in stuff (they only seem to come in a square pattern)

Greetings programs. For those wanting to check out ANNISSA's photo shoot. Type in COSPLAY IN AMERICA. On YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.
Also check out the new TRON TRAILER for the animated TRON UPRISING. The stories take place after TRON & Before TRON LEGACY. Hope everyone enjoys this.
I hope this inspires us for more ideas. End of Line!

Yes, very light sanding and another couple coats should do it. Spray usually drips when you are either holding the can too close, or when the coat is too thick. Use many thin coats rather than one thick one.

ok.. paint help if someone has an answer:

I ooops'd! a tad the other day. Without noticing my error quickly enough I find I had a bit of 'drip' on my recently spray painted helm. Seems I slowed down for a second, or it might be the nozzle on the can as it has happened again since I tested the paint elsewhere, and got that ugly dripping look right along the front of the helm, just above where I will putting my visor.

Any suggestion of how I can fade or remove this drip look from the Semi-Gloss Black Rust-oleum fast drying spray paint? Very light sanding with 200-400 (or finer) paper and then careful retouching with a few well aimed paint sprays, or other option you have found to work well?

I like the response one of the people gave on YouTube on another link of the same trailer, "I just rezzed in my pants" hahaha.

Anyway, back onto costuming: Has anyone compared durability, aesthetics, etc of Plasti Dip compared to PAX paint (pros-aide and liquitex) applied to closed cell foam like L200 or another craft foam?
Roving around I've seen plastidip used a lot but the comparison is what I'm looking for. Also does the Plasti-dip reduced flexibility at all? minimally? somewhat? a lot? Thanks

Two of my good friends recently completed their Tron Legacy costumes for a convention last week. One was Quorra, the other was a Siren.

After failing my attempt last year at Sam's suit (this thread was only THREE pages long when I tried to make it!), I used Inception (cue music haha) to discreetly plant the idea in their head that doing a Tron outfit would be awesome, as they are better and more experienced cosplayers than I.

While there was a lot of improvisation for her Quorra outfit given time and money constraints (the majority of money going to the EL wire), my friend used quite a lot of the methods perfected here by users like Annissa and others over the last year, so we definitely have RPF to thank =D

There was definitely a fair share of problems.
The main one being the EL wire shorting out on the day due to a lack of planning for the wiring WHILE she was wearing the costume.

She likes to do tutorial posts for her costumes, so here's her one for Quorra.

Here's a few pics from the convention last week.

My friend DOES have the EL wire ready for the Siren outfit, but due to time running out, she opted for reflective tape instead.

Now I need to get off my ass and do Castor =/

Yeah I had a bit of a problem here to. I ended up fabric gluing it to the fabric. Mine has backing so I just left it like that.

Termin8Anakin - The costumes look fantastic! I am most intrigued by the lady on the right, as the Siren. I've been racking my brain trying to figure out how to do that suit. Do you know how she made hers? Thanks!

She bought a silver zentai suit off ebay and then just modified it by cutting it up and adding the white sections. The long gloves are made from the same material.
The reason for getting a silver suit over a white one is because of the crotch and underarm sections are the hardest to get right yourself.

The reflective tape was just cut out and stuck on with velcro. She'll do the same thing when she finishes the EL wire.
You'll notice on the Sirens that their light lines are simply stuck on, rather than integrated within the suit like Sam and Quorra. This made making the suit easier, but at the same time harder because she had to wear the suit while they traced and GLUED ON the pattern for the light lines - as it was stretchy lycra the lines would've deformed heaps if she'd done it while it was off.

The shoes were just normal stilettos. We couldn't figure out how to make awesome cut out heels haha.

Here's the Tron: Uprising series trailer, for those that hate to search as I do. :p

Woah. Much higher quality than I expected... then again, it's Disney.

Both the physics and the look/feel of it seem to be a hybrid of Legacy and the original movie. Light cycles can cut at right angles; the suits (at least for our unnamed protagonist) has circuit-board-inspired designs all over, as opposed to a few solid glowing lines....

Looks like Disney is trying to rev up a franchise a la Clone Wars, and I wish them luck. This certainly looks awesome, and it could catch fire with a whole new generation of information-savvy kids, much as it did me a couple decades ago....

Thanks for sharing. I'd have missed it if I hadn't seen it here.

The design seems to be what I call TRON 1.5 (i.e. what my TRON Legacy costume concept was inspired by) and Disney is actually spending some coin on the series it seems. Nice graphics, smooth movement, and with luck.. only slightly aimed at kids.

Since the storyline takes place somewhere around the same time, or slightly before/after the TRON: Betrayal comix, the modern Legacy style circuits and the old school 'board' lines seem to have a nice mix when thrown together. It has made me happy knowing that I was doing exactly that on my costume and now I have video direct from the source as validation of my creative attempts. :love

I just hope it comes to a different channel besides Disney XD, I don't have fancy highend cable. Show looks interesting, can't wait for it.

I would not call Disney XD 'highend cable' (nothing Disney does is normally high-end by any degree), but it is not part of the normal cable packages I am aware of here in NYC. It is channel 60 here on Comcast Cable.

Termin8Anakin please PLEASE tell your friend her tutorial is really helpful. :D

Could you possible ask her how she modified the duct tape dressform into a full body one? I really don't want to end up stuck in duct tape mummy like state and have to figure a way to free myself without destroying it.

Ah, I wondered about that! I was musing on getting a zentai suit off ebay, but I've never dealt with one before. I have a couple more questions for you...

1.) Bit of an odd question, but how mobile can one be in a zentai suit? Is it possible to dance in it? I'm hoping to do an LED hoop routine (lit to mimic a Tron disc) in the siren costume. But to do that, I'd need the mobility.

2.) I know you said the silver parts were from a zentai suit, what about the white parts? Are they from a separate zentai suit or another kind of material?

3.) Would you happen to know which silver suit it was off ebay? I did a search and came up with quite a few different ones! Your lady friend had the perfect looking silver so I'd be curious one she used.

My apologies for all the brain-picking, but I very much appreciate the help! :)

I'll be looking to do the same thing with the reflective tape as she did. I'm not going to even worry too much about actually lighting up (since, hopefully, I'll be lit by my LED hoop).

As for the heels, I'll probably end up doing the same. There are a few wedge heels on ebay, but sadly, they're still out of my budget. Here's to hoping!

You should have no problems running around on the dance floor in a zentai. I had a Alien/Venom spiderman one a few years back. No problems whatsoever.

Don't go the eBay route though. Your best bet is to try doitstyle.com. They custom make zentai suits for a pretty low cost. I emailed them my Sam flyn design and they said they could do it for $110 including shipping. I'm sure the could handle the Siren get up. Its considerable less detailed. Send them a drawing or some screen shots from a few angles, they respond pretty quickly. They can also do whatever materials you want. They offer Lycra (spandex) PVC, and one they call "glueing" which is like a latex infused spandex. Its softer than PVC and not plasticy. It still shiny though. I'd say white spandex and silver glueing would be a good bet. Check them out.

As for me, I'm still not sure if I'm going the Zentai Sam Flynn route or the Young Kevin Flynn Jacket pants rout.

From my own experience with zentai suits, mobility is in NO WAY hindered by the suit, if it is the correct size for you. I have one that is made to my general shape and I could easily choreo, fight, dance in it. All mine happens to be is a full body lycra suit with hands and feet and a detachable full head hood (with eyes holes cut into it). The suit was also mod'd with a groin zipper, since getting out of a zentai suit alone to use the bathroom is nearly impossible with armor on.

The biggest issue I have with lycra zentai.. it's damn cold! A slight wind or chill air and you know! you are wearing lycra (works great to dump heat in a night club or party situation).

Sorry, forgot the pic.

This is the Zentai Sam design I was talking about. The grey undersuit in the design would be made with black lycra and the over suit armor part would be that black glueing I mentioned. That way it looks a little shiny and looks like its over the regular black. The white line would be made from whit pvc. That way they are thicker and less stretchy, so if my modded disc doest provide enough light onto the costume, I can go over the white with reflective tape.

But, like I said, I'm not sure. I might still go the modded ALpine Stars, leather pants Young Kevin Flynn... We'll see.

I was planning on making a Sam costume, and still probably will. But after watching this:

The Tron Lebowski - CollegeHumor video

I really really want to make a Tron Lebowski costume. Along with a Tron Lebowski Couch, A Tron Lebowski motherboard rug, and really everything from this trailer. If you liked Tron, and the Big Lebowski... you should definitely check out that link since it is amazing.

P.S. MisterDigital, thanks for the info on zentai suits. I was already working on modifying a wetsuit but, a custom zentai suit might be a better option if I can figure out how to work around the cold.
