Tron Legacy Costume

TheLadyNerd

1)Yeah what everyone's been saying above. Your mobility isn't hindered at all. I've got a full head-to-toe one myself and yeah the only problem is that it can get a bit chilly haha

2) The white was just lyrcra. There was a bit of shine to it as well, like some sort of white glittery stuff on it.
The HARDEST part of any suit like this is to get the pattern right. We all have actual body casts of ourselves, which makes it SIGNIFICANTLY easier to draw and create patterns for costumes.
So essentially all my friend would've done was to put the zentai suit on the dummy, trace out the pattern on the suit itself, cut out what was needed and simply trace the cut-outs on the white fabric then sew it back together.

3) I'm not sure which ebay store she got it from. I just tried doing a search for it myself but there's too many results hahaha. eBay is just one place you can get suits from. My friend had a particularly hard time dealing with the store, so you may want to try the website MisterDigital suggested. Totally up to you. They're all comparatively priced.

Hope that helps!

My personal opinion is to wait till SoulInertia releases his hex fabric. I think he plans to get it out this month, which is perfect for me cause I gotta do my build and soon.

As promised, here is a somewhat different TRON 1.5 styled helmet. I used GlowHut.com Green ELTape (3/4x1.4metre) and a used Fire X-1 Snowboard helm found on eBay for about $12.

ELTape was wired with E6000 glue instead of solder or etco-clips. The bond is stong enough to take some reasonable flexing. The tape was then glued with E6000 to the foam insert of the helm. The helm has vent holes running the sides and top, so the plan was simple:

The wires and tape are all glued down to stay flush with the foam insert. A power test to make sure my wires are still active and stable:

The helmet shell, unpainted and showing the mesh covered vent slots:

The shell has some minor details (heat formed stickers that were a ***** to remove so I left them on and prayed when I began painting) and was painted with Rust-Oleum x2 Quick Drying Black Spray paint:

The slight detail sections actually look interesting once painted black. I get the feel that the broken lines of these raised areas look a bit like 'Derezzing effects'.

The shell and foam insert were slid carefully back into place (no need to glue them as one since the insert is very tight inside the helm, plus it allows me to make repairs/changes later). The visor came off of my Dec 2010 TRON helm (which is a much bigger, DOT street legal helm) and with some EVA Foam as mounting areas just ahead of the ear slots, the visor was E6000 glued to the helm/eva and then a single grip-tie strip was added for visor stability (not shown in this pic). I also added a small block of EVA Foam to the front of the helm to act as a ledge for the visor to sit on right above the area of the eyes, which added to the visor stability:

The EVA Foam showing through the holes in the visor tabs (the grey areas in the holes) will be painted over, as well as a small area of the visor tabs themselves, with PlastiDip Black to give the visor a look of being more a part of the helm body.

And finally.. full testing:

All in all, not a bad look. I am not 100% happy with the placement of the ELTape as the two vent holes at the 'far sides above the temples' of the shell do not sit dead above the holes in the foam insert, thus making the tape not sit right where I wanted. It is still a good concept, an interesting look, and a simple build that took time simply because of the glue dry process. Total build time, with giving the glue and paint a full 2 days to cure - about 4 or 5 hours. Total build cost - just about $22 and that leaves me the remaining ELTape (nearly 3.5 feet worth) and E6000 Glue (about 90% of the tube) for use elsewhere on the suit.

All that remains to be done is adding the Green UV Gaffers Tape here and there to give the helm some lines and breaks, adding 'purpose' to the lit vents. (update to follow)

*UPDATE* Done, except for the small areas that need a hint of black paint. Safe to say it is basically 2mins from complete now.

This is where I'll be getting my Identity Disc mod from. This guy has an awesome lighting mod kit.

Same here. Plus he is assisting those willing to install the kit themselves. Also, it looks like he is continuing to develop the enhancements.

That my friend is awesome. If you notice on Sam's helmet, theres mesh in the vents so putting the tape under it gave the same effects as seen in the movie. Nicely done can't wait to see how the suits going to turn out :cool

Thank you for the kind words. I thought the vents in Sam's helmet looked like they were a bit meshed, hence why I did not take the screens out of this helm's holes. you can see the mesh of Sam's helmet here. At first I mistook it for the hex pattern material of the undersuit, but not the case when seen closeup.
Sam_FlynnHelmet_3-1.jpg

I might, if the mood strikes me, end up pulling the ELTape off of the foam insert and placing the tape directly onto the shell, right under the mesh covered vents. The way the light shows through now, it's a bit off-center and it makes me that 1-3% unhappy with the build. :unsure

This is the final look (for now), without the hooded outer sleeveless coat, the zentai full body suit (though the black fiberglass body mimics it well), and the heavy leather boots with backlighting:

Been a while since I swung by this thread, lurked a bit to catch up.

Gams, your helmet accomplishment makes me want to do one for my program, and before I saw that i was fairly resistant to the idea. Very nice work, and I think if you replace the pieces to the outer core you'll be set -- I really like it.

Annisse: did you find a tutorial on how to cut EL tape at right angles? I've got some Google hits but I'd like to know the one you found for reference.

Thor- very nice outer layer...I'm envious of that jacket!

Termin8Anakin please PLEASE tell your friend her tutorial is really helpful. :D

Could you possible ask her how she modified the duct tape dressform into a full body one? I really don't want to end up stuck in duct tape mummy like state and have to figure a way to free myself without destroying it.

Hi, finally joined the forums woo!

The duct tape form was made with a help of another person, basically you would get an old tight fitting turtleneck and a pair of leggings and while wearing that, a friend would wrap you in duct tape.

For a full male, it takes around 5 rolls of 30M duct tape. For a girl of size 8-10 around 3.5 rolls. You would need around 6 rolls all up for maintenance anyway.

The wrapping process takes around 2 hours, make sure you go to the bathroom before hand or else you will get stuck. Go from feet to neck and wrap VERY loosely otherwise you start losing circulation and once full wrapped DO NOT lie down or you might get short of breath (also because you can't get back up.) You start wrapping seated, but after getting to around mid-thigh you'll need to stand for the rest.

After you've been fully wrapped, draw with texta lines down your spine, arms and legs, and mark x's along the way so when you cut down those lines, you can match it back up and duct tape along the way.

Really simple process, just need a friend you're comfortable with.

:)

also decided I'm going to make a katana for my costume. Gonna buy a wooden training bokken and paint it accordingly. Good chance to use some more glow paint

You should totally put some el wire on the katana itself(maybe some on the sheath, and see if you can dremel out a bit on the blade and run some along there(and hide the inverter in the hilt) I would be truly jealous of that!

I have my old training bokken out (too old and no time to train anymore) I checked the inverter for my costumes EL Wire against in and found it's too big to fit in handle :S but I think maybe sawing off handle and creating a handle built around inverter then attaching to blade might be a good option, my EL wire lengths are too long for the blade though. I would run the EL Wire through some oxygen tubing glued into the dremmeled channel.

If I was savvy enough to do it I would. But at the same time, the el wire in my classic tron disc no only has been a pain the ass not staying on, but the lighting in itself is dying in places so I don't really trust it anymore. Yet I might be putting some on my undershirt anyways. We shall see.

There is always my option choice.. 3watt LED 'Lightsaber' version of a blade:

(bright enough to blow ANY EL item away) :love

*****

I also just discovered that the ELTape on my helmet insert is NOT coming off short of utter destruction of the insert. Boy, when I build um, they stay built!

well thats better than falling apart randomly! I think I may try carving, anf inlaying a peice of el wire in thw grove, then painting a circuit design on the blade with glow paint... But that will wait till summer when I actually have time.

Glow paint is the bomb. People don't really think about it or give it the time of day but its quite fun. I painted mine and my friends identity disc rings with glow paint

just a quick update on my costume. first i plan on using one of soulinertia's brilliantly crater mods for my discs, I have the clothing i plan to use for my military/hoodie outfit.

Only snag i have hit so far is that i dont know where i can buy Orange EL tape, I figure i have a rinzler disc i should have rinzlers colors. Im also kinda wondering how EL tape generally works, whether it needs a current flow of power to keep its Tron like glow, or if it can sustain a glow on its own. just need some advice in general to get a basic idea of what i do when i not only find but buy my EL tape.

Love what you guys are doing with the costumes, hope to see some of you at anime expo or Comic-con this year

My Quorra tutorial can be found here: Over at LJ .

And The Siren costume was a matte grey zentai suit bought off ebay. This was then cut up and white glitter lycra was sewn for the white pieces. This is a white lycra with a fine metallic finish for high shine look. Probably the most difficult bit of sewing this way is that you will need a full body duct tape dummy in order to pattern the pieces correctly to fit your body exactly. However the metallic finish made it easier for hot glue to adhere straight onto the fabric with velcro. This method withstood several 'pull' tests and so long as your lycra has something to 'melt' into the glue it should have the same success rate. She's using reflective tape in the pictures but will update her costume later with EL wire. The contacts she's wearing are Lestat Blue.

Thanks Annisse and Eddiedyr and everyone on this whooping 114+ thread for helping us through the arduous process of making these costumes.
