I hope this company gets back to me. I emailed them a couple days ago and the email got returned to me, but I saw where the error was and it was being forwarded to another email address. I corrected the error, the left off the .com on the forward, so, I hope my message gets to them about what I want to order. I think this company is my last hope on the type of El Panel film that will work with my costume needs.

Annisse, do you have or will you be putting up a tutorial on how you did your Quorra costume? I love your costume, I think it's the best one out there so far and I'm trying to do a Quorra costume for a local con coming up in April. I would appreciate it so much if you could give me some pointers! Especially on how you used the EL Wire/tape/panel for your 2nd costume. All the choices and differences, especially in prices, are a little overwhelming. Thanks!

Yes I am and I apologize for not getting around to it yet. So short on time with my job it's hard to fit it my busy schedule. I have to sit down, organize my photos and how I am going to write the tutorial out. I always seem to complicate things because I want to make sure I am being through, but maybe I will just write it up as simple as I can and if you have more questions you can just write and ask me. I will try this towards the end of the week when have a day off work.

One question I keep having if you use both EL plates and ribbon, how do you get the color to match? the plates look pinkish when off while the ribbon looks almost white. Also when illuminated how do they look side by side?

I am thinking I need to focus on only one form of EL? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone! I've been lurking around this thread for about the past month, reading up as much as I can - particularly on applying EL wire/Tape/lighting, and I want to say that this has been very helpful for me!

I'm about to get started on a Quorra costume (which I intend to use at my high school senior prom with a longer dress extension instead of her regular skirt + possibly a train to match, and then at AnimeExpo and possibly ComicCon if I can). This is what I have at my disposal to work with:


x $300 budget for the dress/outfit (including all cloth, lighting, gloves, boots, etc.)

x Blue Deluxe Identity Disc

x black scrap cloth and a black dress I used previously if necessary - however we'd like the clothing to stay as "artistically consistent" as possible.

x 3.5 months to Prom night, another month to AX. If possible to get it done maybe a month sooner, that'd be great - our school's FIDM-sponsored Fashion Club is having a school fundraiser runway show around that time and as a member it would be wonderful to have that for display by that time. ^^

x Tons of experience sewing, so designing the clothing and getting the EL tape applied once it's hooked up should be no issue - however, I have absolutely no experience with soldering or lighting. The tutorials have been a great help, and I've got a game plan down, but I'll let you guys know if I have any specific questions. ^^

x No pictures of myself, but these are my measurements, in case anyone who has done the Quorra costume has advice on the sewing/form fitting:
-5'4"
-110-115lbs
-34B
-28-29" at smallest part of the waist
-36-37" at widest
-Hair: Black


SYSTEM SPECS/COSTUME PLANNING:

x No plans on dancing or anything crazy, so flexibility isn't a huge issue, but Quorra's outfit should be form-fitting and I still need to move around reasonably. Also, as the Prom is on a boat/massive party yacht in Long Beach (take a good hard look at the motherfxxxing boat!), I do have ocean air to deal with. If anyone has experienced EL wire/tape issues with moist/humid air, please let me know!

x If it hasn't been established already, the outfit will not be exactly like Quorra's - It is a modification of it, though the only significant change is really the skirt extension of her outfit which I will swap for a longer, dress extension (which does not light up) for Prom, and go for a more true-to-movie style for conventions and Halloween.

x LIGHTING: Plan A: a combination of EL Tape and reflective tape, using as few inverters as possible (3 or under), which will be hidden either under the dress/skirt part, attached beneath the Disc, or hidden in a purse. Lighting is sewn into the clothes and/or attached with velcro.

Plan B: use eddieadryr's EL wire+diffusion lighting plan as seen on Page 25, using reflective tape instead of aluminum foil.

Plan C: Plan B, except with a ton of blue glow bracelets attached together instead of EL wire.

Plan D: reflective tape.

x OTHER: I would love to implement the sound/stereo suggestion from earlier, and thankfully I have tons of experience with audio hardware - I have a set of Koss PortaPRO headphones that get really loud, I can detach the earpieces from the frame, install them under the "donuts" on Quorra's shoulders, hook them up to my iPod (wires hidden in the gloves) and voila! Even if I can't get that done, my PortaPROs have a fitting blue/black/silver scheme anyway, so they would go perfectly with the outfit c:



Hopefully I will have a sketch of what exactly I've got planned up soon. Either way, I'll keep you guys updated from project start to finish if I can, with pics! C: I'm still getting through reading the -entire- thread thoroughly, but if anyone has specific advice for Quorra that'd be great ^^

I know the EL tape/ribbon at glowhut.com is pink when off. apparently pink off/white on is brighter than white on/white off

as far as tape goes, i dont think sea air will be a problem since it's laminated. if you cut it though you are going to have to seal off the edge to prevent moisture from getting in (I used electrical tape). Also I think itd be pretty cool if you wired the long skirt up with some el wire. Though that is just a suggestion.

3-inch wide El Panel split electrode x 1.5-feet: $29.93 (to design my circle patterns)

1 inverter to power 204 sq.
in. of EL panel: $66.00 (Inverter has built in dimmer, and measures 4.0 x 2.06 x 1.5-inches, Weight - 8oz) - This inverter is a 12volt inverter which will allow you to build your own battery pack to power the suit.

2mm Leads with 1ft of wire: $2.00a pair (There will be an additional $0.15 per foot of wire required.)

The above prices do not include shipping.

So they do sell by the half a foot their El Panel lighting and they can customize your lead wires if you need longer wires. Their connector lead wires are only a foot long, I need all kinds of different lengths. The more slack the better to avoid too much pulling when you move around in costume.

Awesome! Glad to hear that they got back to you and seem hobbyist-friendly. It seems that lighttape.com only advertises pre-cut 2' lengths in kits, so luminousfilm.com might be the better way for me to go.

I'm trying to make a Quorra costume, so right now I have a latex suit being made for me by a seamstress, and a lighttape supplier that can sell me high quality tapes (they're laminated and so not flexible). Coupla questions:

1. How did you attach the EL tape to the suit? From what I've figured out, I can glue it to black vinyl strips then sew the strips to the suit. All the connectors can then go hidden beneath the strips (or suit). Is this correct (or do you have a better way)?

2. How did you creat the back thingie that holds the disc? How did you attach it to the suit?

3. Did you buy the identity disc in toy stores? I did, but it's more blue than aqua, how did you change that? (Or have you not?)

1. The way I attached my el tape was velcro. Just make sure that if you go that route, put the hook part on the garment and the hairy part (dont know what its called haha) on the tape that way its much easier to switch out once it gets worn out.

2. Theres many ways to create it, but you can buy one here Disk Holder Mount but youll have to probably use nuts and bots to secure it on.

3. Most everyone got one from the stores and modded it. Soulinertia made a mod kit to where you can make it pretty much any color of your choice so I'd look for that thread. If you are unhappy with the blue rings it came with, you can always try to find a Kevin Flynn disc (which has clear rings) and switch them out. You will definately want to be careful removing the inner ring as if you arent, you could break it.

As a fellow lurker and first-time poster:

Read it anyway. All of it. It's entertaining, it's engrossing, and it encompasses a lot of trail-and-error that folks like you or I would likely commit on our first few attempts anyway. You'll see everything tried and see how everything panned out, right here. You'll see theory and hope meet fact and get mashed, then get corrected. There's little you can think of these people haven't already tried.... though I have a couple pet ideas of my own, but no use saying anything until I have something to show....

Read a few pages each day. Bookmark it when you quit. Come back and read more the *next* day. What you learn will save a lot of money and a lot of man-hours, and get you far closer to the image of cinematic perfection you have in your mind's eye.

Oh and ah, hi everybody. I made my first Tron suit out of thermal underwear and electrical tape for Halloween when I was fourteen. The next will be better, thanks to you.

Just throwing this up here in case anyone was wondering what the color Erin's Tangerine looks like from coolneon.com. Here's what they told me about it as well: "No official picture just yet, we will be updating our color chart soon. Here is a picture I took with my DSi. Not great quality but the colors are pretty good. This is laying across 2.5mm colors (2.5mm is out of stock, 2.6mm wire is currently replacing it, colors for 2.6mm are not the same as 2.5mm, that's why we need to redo our color chart) Hope this helps."

PhilOssiferz - I already do that, but because I live in Israel and we've got our "Halloween" coming in a month, I'd rather order everything now and get it done as fast as I can because sometimes it takes a month or so for stuff from eBay to get here... So I'd rather do my shopping list and all the things I need people for ASAP (like a seamstress, don't have a clue with a needle!), then for stuff I do myself (like attaching the lighttape) I can sit back and read everything.
