Tron Legacy Costume

It seems the new Tron "glow effect" doesn't seem to actualy light the actors. So I'd guess they are useing the old Scotchlite technique...basicly the same thing that was done for the begining of Terminator 2 with the "glowing hot" cut open edges of the trailer after the terminators went through time.

Basicly Scotchlite tape is applied to the suits, and the light from a ring of LEDs mounted on the camera gets reflected directly back into the lens.

You can see this same technique every night in the real world as all manner of street signs, emergency crew uniforms, etc. have Scotchlite applied to them:

They actually used el panels with battery packs on the back. the suits were electronic

Ah, so it was merged into this one. I was wondering why the OP was asking as this thread is already chock full of EL panel goodies :lol

Yes, any newbies coming into this thread unfortunately gotta back up through all the hundred pages here to find their answers. Just about every single thing about these Tron costumes has been discussed here.

Use the search feature. ;)

Thanks, yes after I posted I was like DUH!!! there's the price link. I am contacting the company now to see what they can do for me. Thinking of lighting up my End of Line Club waitress costume I am creating out of white latex designed after the concept art. Wanted to use reflective tape but I LIKE TO LIGHT UP! ;)

Annisse

I found another site that does sell larger widths of tape, you might look at these, it is just out of my price range at this time. The website is http://www.lighttape.com. They gave me some base prices to work with right now, 5 dollars for their clip (probably can use a different one for the connection); 2 inch 15.95 per foot. They do have larger sizes but this is the size I was looking at. These are current prices and may be subject to change from what I heard. Hope this helps.

Yes, one of the original members from this thread used Light Tape in green to light up his Tron costume. It is freaking amazingly bright that stuff. Much brighter than El Tape even. But the thing is Light Tape is a pretty penny. Just to light up his jacket was around $400 bucks.

Yeah, I am going the Luminous Film company El Tape route. Can't afford Light Tape. If you can afford it, go for it. The light effects are top of the line!

Annisse,

So the light tape is brighter than the luminous film? Have you been able to compare them. I'm in the same boat and need to make the financial plunge some time soon. Thanks!

I have compared them by seeing them in person when we had our TL movie premiere party get together back in December when two of the members here Actordiver and Compass72 wore their Tron suits. Compass's was white El Sheeting, same brightness as El Tape and El Panel but Actordiver has Light Tape in Green on his jacket.

Maybe the green is just brighter than the white in general but Light Tape looked very bright to me compared to Compass's white.

But Compass's El Sheeting looked awesome too and what I am going to be using El panel from LuminousFilm.com now that I see you can bend the split electrode panel at an angle, this is exactly what I need to achieve the angles in Quorra's costume. I didn't know you could bend that stuff to get angles, otherwise I would have went with with EL Panel/Tape from the beginning of my 2nd suit build.

There is Split Electrode El panel and Parallel El Panel. I believe what Compass used was Parallel Panel El Sheet.

It's just Luminousfilm.com is ALOT cheaper in price than Light Tape. The Light Tape site does says though that their Light Panels are brighter than EL lighting.

From the Luminousfilm.com site I just estimated about $150 dollars of 1 inch El Panel and 3 inch El Panel for the circles in Split Electrode to redo my Quorra suit lighting.

This is approximately 17 feet for my entire suit not including the boot. This price is not including the inverter. The inverter will be an additional $80 bucks approximately.

Not a cheap costume we got going on here guys ;) but going with El Panel is still cheaper than Light Tape.

got some ideas for my costume design. I plan on using a hoodie sweatshirt and the putting the designs as shown (obviously). only problem i have is that I dont know a good site to buy the Glow tape let alone a good method to make it glow at the appropriate brightness. also I was wondering if anyone knew a good way to apply a diskmount to clothing.

Im thinking a hot glue gun would work, but sadly Im not very creative when it comes to clothing design.

Question on ID disc holders.....

Using magnets how are you shaping holder so it's flush and gets good hold or are you relying on rare earths strength to grab and hold?

Rare Earth magnets. I got a 10 pack of 3/4" ones off Ebay. I inserted two, inside the disc, top and bottom next to the circuirts and ABS plastic. Which there isn't any way to completely make them flush, flat on the surface either. I used Epoxy to hold them down on the disc.

The glue for the magnets to your armor will depend on what you made it out of. My Quorra armor is made out of latex so I used a piece of latex with rubber cement to hold the opposing magnets in place. Disc holds on pretty good to my back but if someone hits my disc even slightly, it falls right off.

Attaching the rare earth magnets INSIDE the disc makes the connection weaker. The magnets are better off outside the disc and much easier to deal with, make a stronger connection, but then you have to deal with them showing outside the disc of course unless you cover them and don't mind the bump of the magnets showing on your disc.

That's a very Gibson looking design. Should be an interesting build. As noted (search function) before, there are a few companies for ELTape/ELWire. The issue to keep in mind is bending and joint areas (i.e. shoulders, etc).

I can't believe it's taken me three whole days to read this thread!

You've all done so wonderfully that I am giddy with glee at the prospect of seing the film and getting my costume together during this year (along with the hundread or so other ones I want to make).

Keep up the amazing work people :D

I modified some gloves to use with my costume -- took some $3 halloween store stretch gloves and decorated them with mesh fabric, craft foam, liquid latex, and shoe polish. They came out looking like this:

Not quite perfect but I think they'll do. I also made a tight-fitting shirt to wear under everything else, out of that same mesh fabric layered over spandex (er ... my solution to "needs texture" when I don't have access to that hexagon print) but I don't have a picture of that yet.

Annisse, I must be missing it, as all I see for 1" strips are the kits (EL strip + inverter), and they seem to be priced much higher. The stuff from lighttape.com seems priced a bit lower for the 1" by 2 ft length (which is probably all I'd need for a Young Flynn jacket).

Annisse, do you have or will you be putting up a tutorial on how you did your Quorra costume? I love your costume, I think it's the best one out there so far and I'm trying to do a Quorra costume for a local con coming up in April. I would appreciate it so much if you could give me some pointers! Especially on how you used the EL Wire/tape/panel for your 2nd costume. All the choices and differences, especially in prices, are a little overwhelming. Thanks!

Well after doing a little planning I have decided to pick up some el wire to ring the reflective tape on the front of my jacket with. I know some people have "diffused" it to make it look better, any advice on this method? Also how should I go about attaching it to my jacket?
