Tron Legacy Costume

Wonder if they would work with ELTape and ELWire. :)

Not sure if I would spend $450+ on it, but it looks like a nice toy for those willing to throw some coin around.

I know what you mean. I'm thinking of it as a whole suit for less than the cost of the official UD jacket. You get what you pay for. lol

It would all be black also, the gray is to show contrast. That part would be black cordura.

As for the EL, I doubt it. Even if they would, it would probobly be cheaper to mod it yourself after you get it. I'm thinking I might do that. I'm waiting for a little more info on some details. I'm strongly considering it. Who knows, I might even win back some of the money on costume contests around Haloween. lol

For the body suit, I am thinking about buying a wet suit. What would be the best material to use for the plating on the outside of Sam's outfit?

If you go the wetsuit route you have a few options, but the easiest way (and most stable) is to paint your design onto the wetsuit. I've trolled diver forms for a while and they have some tips on this. They do it for camo their wetsuit in reefs etc.

There is also another way that would be easier for Tron suits. They talk about using plasti-cdp spray paint. Line out your design on the wet suit (the white Tron circuits) and tape of everything else so it doest get sprayed. Spray on your white plasti-dip, and let dry. Once it dries, slap a coat of aqua-seal or cotol on it, dry again and you're done. According to the dive guys teh pasliti-dip is just flexible enough not to crack, and the aquaseal protectes it from the elements.

They even do it with latex paints. Pretty simple. The drawback for us is that it's not reflective and it doesn't light up. You would still be back to the whole non stretchy lighting on a stretchy wet-suit problem.

You could definitly do it for less than $150 for a super cool Halloween costume though.

Anyone able to find some good reflective tape in green? I want to use green for my design.. but I'm a bit shakey at purchasing such tape cause they all seem to have pretty dull colors. So far Amazon.com: 3M 79946 Scotchlite Reflective Striping Tape, 1-Inch x 50-Foot, Green: Home Improvement is all I've been able to find so far, that might be best, but it also isn't cheap.

There's also this Amazon.com: JVCC REF-7 Engineering Grade Reflective Tape: 1 in. x 30 ft. (Green): Home Improvement but it looks to be a very teal-ish green. A good deal cheaper, though.

Hi all!

Still very curious about this....

Does anyone know where you can purchase El Tape (white color) 2 inches wide maybe even 2.5 inches wide?

I have been talking to the guy from Glowhut.com and he doesn't seem to really understand what I need. I want custom made strips of El Tape for my Quorra costume.

All I seem to find out there online and ppl talking about here in the forum is 1.5 inches the widest width. I want 2 inches or 2.5 inches wide to create the circles.

Thanks for your help! :)

If there just isn't any wider widths of El Tape available, I like what you did here and after looking over your photos was wondering if you think I can extend a 1.5 inch wide piece of El Tape side by side with another cut piece of 1.5 inch wide El Tape to extend it to 3 inches wide by means of soldering red/black wires together then soldering those pieces to El Tape strip of my design which eventually leads to the inverter and power source.

Sorry if this is confusing, hopefully someone will understand what I mean here.

I just need El Tape wide enough to create the circle parts. 3 inches wide would be perfect!

I am not interested in using El Sheeting.

Thanks for your help! :)

For those of us not sure about the setup of ELTape, I did a minor experiment this eve to see just how easy or hard it is to make so. The issue is making sure your connectors (2 of them) are seperated by the median or divider line on the back (underside) of the ELTape. In the case of my tape, it's damn close to one side where this line comes into play, but I used glue, not solder or clips so you can see clearly the contacts.

Front (lit) side of ELTape section. Powered by a 12v Sound Driver:

Back (unlit) side of ELTape section. Same power, no solder, just crazy glue and careful placement:

As asked before, if ANYONE knows where to find the small clips that could be used to 'bite' into this sort of ELTape and create stable connections for power, please let us know. I can't imagine being able to solder the neg wire onto the ELTape with such a small (nearly the width of the wire) area without spilling over into the other section and shorting the whole dang thing.

Hello Anisse,

Used to be kaiwalk...but I had to reborn due to some issues.
Nevermind, as I said, Luminous film is THE place.
Please take a look at their PDFs. As I said, priceless.
They have everything. I bought 0.5, 1, 2 and 3 inches tape (2 for the circles, right!) and they even have the quoting on the website.

Nice to see you back!

Side by side ELTape sections 'could' be done, yes. Will it look good and hold its shape? No clue. :unsure I would imagine that the issue will be the overlapping area between the two-three strips of ELTape where the 'dead zones' of no color light come up and touch each other on the far edges of each bit of tape.

As noted, I believe LuminousFilm does have some wider tapes on their PDF file.

Great thanks so much! Never seen this site before. Seems perfect for what I need to do.

I did see the PDF with the difference EL Panel widths but don't see a place for a quote. I'll just contact them, tell them exactly what I need.

I can try this method maybe with the LF site. I have a feeling I might have to do this if I want to get the circles or any of the angles.

But according to their Fabrication Manual you can bend the film into angle as long as you don't bend on the Scribe part which can break the EL lamp.

This sounds perfect! Had no idea you can bend it into angles. This is the problem I had with going with El Tape, didn't think you can bend it. Their manual demo totally helps me see how angles can be achieved! YAY!

Newbie here!

All I know is this is the most helpful 100+ page thread I have ever seen in my life. Without all of these pointers I wouldn't know where to begin with Tron costumes for my boyfriend and I. Everyone, I want to give you a huge round of applause for all your hard work.

I am going to try a wonderflex armor route. I was given huge reassurance that this will be able to handle movement and not tear unless you start stabbing at it. I am going to use Eva's foam on the inside for support when shaping.

I will post progress working with wonderflex once I get started.

Annisse, you are my motivation. Seeing your photos has blown my mind and I hope I can turn out to be 1/2 as good as your costume.

Annisse

I found another site that does sell larger widths of tape, you might look at these, it is just out of my price range at this time. The website is http://www.lighttape.com. They gave me some base prices to work with right now, 5 dollars for their clip (probably can use a different one for the connection); 2 inch 15.95 per foot. They do have larger sizes but this is the size I was looking at. These are current prices and may be subject to change from what I heard. Hope this helps.

WonderFlex is fun stuff. Easy to work with, easy to form. It will handle basic use and hold up well so long as you are not trying to flex it in any harsh way. EVA Foam backing will do wonders for the strength of the whole structure. Good luck and we want pics... like yesterday! :angel

So I was never sure - was it decided that the lights on the costumes were white, blue, or cyan?

White with Blue environmental reflections I think was the general idea. It should not really come to much debate.. the lights have both tones on film, so feel free to live as YOU think the lights look best. :cool

Got my tape in, here is a pic of it "on" my jacket, just sort of sitting there. It looks pretty good under a flash. When its just sitting there its sort of a dark blue, doesn't look bad but the flash makes it look much better.

It seems the new Tron "glow effect" doesn't seem to actualy light the actors. So I'd guess they are useing the old Scotchlite technique...basicly the same thing that was done for the begining of Terminator 2 with the "glowing hot" cut open edges of the trailer after the terminators went through time.

Basicly Scotchlite tape is applied to the suits, and the light from a ring of LEDs mounted on the camera gets reflected directly back into the lens.

You can see this same technique every night in the real world as all manner of street signs, emergency crew uniforms, etc. have Scotchlite applied to them:
