The Ultimate Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi Real Vintage Parts Lightsaber Group

When were the chronicle photos taken?
I couldn't find any reference in the book.

But now that I opened it I played and tried to take photo of the hilt with and without an old linen tester magnifier but because of the printing technique (lithography?) it is quite noisy :)

Sorry it might be old news for some of you but I tried to find the answer here and I couldn't dig up anything. Do we know where these photos came from?

1. there is the one from the Tom Jung collection
LIGHTSABER - OBI-WAN KENOBI - ANH - CHRONICLES - TOM JUNG PHOTO AUCTION at Invaluable dot com.jpg

2. that was also used for the Mechanismo
SW_Saber_Large.jpg

3. and for the Chronicle if i am not mistake. On this picture also the Tunisia shot with Alec
OB1 Chronicles vs Tunesia_zps6uqdjkmd.JPG

4. is this from the japanese version of Chronicles?
Chronicles OB1-3_zpstdccccqn.jpg

5. Where is this one from with the washers?

6. Also there is this photo:

As I mentioned when you asked via PM, they are all part of the collection of contact sheets that are for promotional photos and continuity. It’s a fairly common practice. LFL has them all. There are thousands of numbered photos on the contact sheets for reference to specific scenes, characters, and props. Lucas would have provided them to artists like Tom for artwork, Mechanismo and Chronicles for publications, etc.

Erm yes, but not exactly, it doesn't matter, but because of what you mentioned I am more curious about where do we got the big resolution photos from and also who could have those photos.

Wow o_O ... first time I've seen this picture ... thanks for sharing onderon ... now where there are contact sheets there are black and white negatives ... whomever has those, and I would assume it to be Lucasfilm Ltd. has the means to print photo-enlargements and scan those or the negatives into high resolution digital pictures :)

Not sure if this helps, but here’s my experience on big, high-res official LFL photos of the actual Obi-Wan lightsaber prop from ANH.

Those saber photos are in the LFL archives and from what I understand some in our community have viewed them in the LFL archives.

I also know that some in our community have large high-res copies of some of those photos but they are not publicly shared or advertised because they were given copies of those photos with the condition/agreement not to share the pics.

I can also tell you that although I have been on the RPF for 20 years and (as far as I know) I’ve always been trustworthy publicly and privately, and I was involved in many Saber discussions and I was one of the few first ‘all original parts’ saber owners, and the Serafino/Roman booster was based off measurements taken off my real Booster, and I have RPF friends (even local ones I’ve actually met in person many times and have a great relationship with) no one has ever reached out to me to share any of the super-secret large high-res photos with me, also swearing me to secrecy. Whatever size/resolution photos I have of this saber so does everyone else.

Many on the RPF, even many who post in this thread, have better, cleaner, bigger copies of those photos… but we’ll never know who. The first rule of Fight Club is do not talk about Fight Club.

I see :) so now it is a you know that I know what you know but we both know it will be kept as secret. Jokes aside. May I know why can't we all have access to these scans? Is this a D/LFL thing or...?

The thing made me start to look into this because schrodinger555 mentioned we don't have access to better resolution photos to be more precise with the size of the washer :D so if those who have access to it could you please measure it and let us know or at least confirm that schrodinger555's measurements are right that would be cool :)

13.6 mm OD
8.23 mm ID
2 mm thick
10.6 mm recess diameter

.535 OD
.324 or 5/16 ID
.078 thick
.416 recess diameter'

In most cases photographers or scan recipients (especially on promotions) / do not really have the right to *distribute* their photos because they were likely, at that time, hired to take the photos as a contractor/ in turn usually signing an NDA- non compete. After giving away distribution rights, ownership, and privileges ... any non public (AKA original format) media that makes it into the wild without the "owner's consent" might put the PHOTOGRAPHER's career at risk. Can you even imagine the fiscal liability and damages possible for those properties now 40 years later?
What if they may even still be affiliated with LFL/Disney?

It is SO different for film-makers who work on set because when the film itself premiers and goes public their NDA is (usually) lifted and they can describe their work experience.

Basically- it's about usage rights. They can not be public because they are not allowed to be.
Anyone who has had the privilege to see said full res scans ALSO have a major burden on their shoulders to make sure that it does not endanger the position of the artist who was responsible for them.

That's why I don't pine for them anymore as it really only proves the point further... it's not always about us

(Edit: to clarify... no I do not have said photos. But I know several photographers who have elaborated on this point)

Wow o_O ... first time I've seen this picture ... thanks for sharing onderon

V312 posted it in the other Obi thread.

Well here they are if anyone wants them. Really please, I understand they're not correct parts. They're modified. But they're real... Still the only replica I've had that was correct so far were the old russrep washers. These while not as thick match fairly close otherwise.

And as promised I shall post the pictures by scottjua of the found washers here too :

Thanks scottjua for assisting, collaborating, adjusting and providing me and hopefully more members with these wonderfully modified old stock washers for our magnificent Obi-Wan ANH lightsabers, be it all vintage parts or replicas :)

OH I was looking at the reflection on the beveled part. Beautiful machining scott

Interesting question - with these being steel or something, will a regular straight flute countersunk work? I had to switch to those round-hole zero flute bits for aluminum

Edit - work would chatter lol

Nice job Scott!!!

Hey Obi Wan fans, I had a go at building a vintage parts Saber. As I was working on a budget I first found myself a rusty beaten up grenade that was broken in half and then used a Roman's balance pipe and booster and a WannaWanga Bubble strip (still on the look out for my Exactra) . I hope that makes my submission worthy of posting in this thread as it's at least 60% vintage. How do you think I did, my washer is definitely too big but other than that any suggestions for details I'm missing?
