The Ultimate Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi Real Vintage Parts Lightsaber Group

Certainly looks the part mikesprops ... be careful when you want to add a D-ring to that pommel ... the cubes are not metal but plastic ... James Kenobi 1138 has made a tutorial thread if you're interested.

Very Good advice, I did a test attempt on an 80's variant to see what I could do and it... did not go well, which is why I haven't done it on any of good pommels. I'll definitely give the tutorial a look and see if I'm feeling more confident afterwards.

James Kenobi 1138 also posted a picture in his tutorial thread of the exact position of each individual part, which I would like to repost in this thread as well, just in case this has been overlooked :

That's really useful and I missed it somehow. While we've got this image up in the thread, one question that's always bothered me is what's up with the the balance pipe on the chronicles saber? I know the MR Obi sabers have similar damage to the balance pipe. Did I miss a discussion on this if it's already been answered.

The way I understand they used to braze the emitter to the neck of the grenade ... rather crudely and Master Replicas replicated this by crimping their emitter over an unknown part ... yet their emitter was not made of the very tough inconel material.

Before the emitter was identified we thought, based on the few photos available, that the emitter was crimped and epoxied to the grenade. The MR was made pre-balance pipe (and pre-booster) discovery so it was made with the best information available at the time.

Once the balance pipe was discovered we knew there was no way it was crimped being too thick and too strong, and as previously mentioned what we believe what we’re seeing in photos is brazing as that is/was a very common way to join metal parts easily.

What metal filler is brazing done with? Electronics and jewelers using lead silver solder… brazing with a torch.. is it a brass stick?

Brazing is really a method more than a material thing (though it does depend on the material being joined) as far as I understand it. It's just like silver soldering but at much higher temperatures. Brass and steel joins pretty well with just soldering but brazing uses a different filler for a stronger join. Some things need different temps for different joins because they're different materials that don't normally join well together. Stainless steel and aluminium are two examples I'm most familiar with. You'll need to use filler that can hold both together and that's where the choice for brazing comes in. There's plenty of filler choices to choose from.

Interesting, if the Balance Pipe was brazed to the grenade, I assume that means if we ever found the balance pipe from ANH we'd be able to easily identify it as being the original part.

This type of military belt could be a good D-ring source?

Or this old East Germany military bag seem to have some goodies too:

I tried to find but I couldn't, which one is the good size D-ring for an Obi ANH?

Anyone tried to actually braze one of these inconel components? I cant imagine they are easy to do - the inside surface would be full of impurities which would make a bad connection.

I assume some clean up and some addition of teeth to the surface might help, though I don't know if Inconel would join all that well (I've never worked with it). Here's hoping we get answers to those wanting to try it when the pieces are sent out.

Does anyone have a rough count of how many complete these days?

I always enjoyed that pretty much every one in existence is a known member or at least known by a member…. Now I’m not sure how many are even out there.

As I've mentioned earlier I have about 50 members in my index ... yet some of those have multiple sabers or parts to create several more, so with the ones 3251bimmer is creating I'd say about 65 or so real vintage parts lightsabers are existing today ... with either a female or male balance pipe ;)

Dropped you a PM Sym-Cha to help keep your records accurate on the builds Ive done

Thanks 3251bimmer ... looking forward to see all your finished builds for others here in this thread :)

Now an inquiry I've always wondered and which perhaps members teecrooz, Diego86 and Malaki Skywalker can answer, since to my knowledge they all have handled a complete Gloster Meteor Jet Engine, ... did you guys ever find any evidence of countersunk or even flat washers amongst all those jet-engine parts that size-wise fit the ones we have been looking for?

Personally I can imagine the production crew also used some of those tubes and other greeblies from the many engines they acquired for i.e. X-wings, Tie fighters heck perhaps even the Millennium Falcon, besides all those burner canisters they used for the Tatooine Bar sequence ;)
