The Nine Gates - NEW PHOTOS (page 12)

So far it's just gusty with light rain in west-central Long Island. I'm passing some time by performing some paper mending repairs.

Soon...

Latest estimate is 7-10 days to regain power in my area. So for now, can't do anything but wait.

Got water, got gas, so I'm happy. Using wifi at a Firestone right now.

Hi mate

Hope everything turns out ok soon. As you said - you got gas and water - that's very good
Good luck

Good to hear that you do fine Hagen :) Best whishes that everything will be back normal soonest possible!

Just got power and internet service restored. I don't know yet if it's temporary, so for now I"m charging everything up and just posting updates. So far so good.

I've become increasingly dissatisfied with buying marbled papers. Either the pattern isn't quite right, the paper is cumbersome, blah blah. So, going forward, I'll be marbling the sheets for these books.

Just to reassure you all, here are some marbles I did just this morning:

I'll continue to keep the look of the marbling for the Nine Gates as black and white in an Italian Vein pattern. Note that this change doesn't affect cost -- I'm just taking matters into my own hands.

Cheers!

Nice work! That "Spanish wave" technique can be tricky to pull off, but you have done a masterful job. You can add one more thing to the list of things I envy you for. :)

Keep up the good work - I really enjoy watching a master at his task!

Awesome Job on the marbled papers Flattery :) Looking perfect!

You are a true master, getting all the necessary things done by your own! That's
true dedication to your craftsmanship!

I am truly flattered and humbled by your comments, gentlemen. I don't know what to say except to thank you. It's a real privilege to be able to perform so many aspects of the work, especially marbling these sheets for the Nine Gates project. In the past, the marbling and bookbinding guilds were exclusive, and the marbling guilds were under constant espionage by the bookbinders so they could marble their own paper and not have to pay the high costs for it. For centuries, marblers performed their art in seclusion.

It's off topic for the thread, but here's a couple more I did this morning in preparation for some upcoming work next month -- another Spanish wave and a French Shell. Cheers!

It is a pleasure to comment your great work Hagen :)

The first marbled paper on the post above reminds me of my headbands made for my latest book i've done ;)

PSBBUCHdetailKapitalband.jpg

The headband is made of self "printed" ( :( ) marbled paper...glued arround a pc. of cord.
It's got "squeezed" while attaching the leather cover, unfortunately. I have to take more care, or use a better paper quality :confused. Still do more "testing" than real binding, lol, but it is getting better (and more time accurat) each time.

And again, thanks for all your great support and answering questions, I've had, the last few month :) :thumbsup

No problem, Ralf!

You chose a good paper for those bands. In the future, I suggest trimming them so that the ends line up with the second or third sections. That way they won't buckle as much when you tie up the headcaps. In fact, I follow that general rule with all headbands, whether they're paper or sewn.

Cheers!

No problem, Murdoc!

Folks, here's a scanned section of the papers used in further copies from here on out. It's virtually identical to the previous paper that I was buying, so no big change. Just wanted people to have a point of reference.

Cheers!

Does anyone know if a full set of novel-version engravings has ever been made available? I am aware of the ones contained in the book itself, but whether a full set with all variations exists is my question. I severely doubt it, but thought I'd ask in case anyone is aware.
