The Mandalorian (TV series)

I was dreading this. I was literally sitting down last week and tonight saying please no lightsabers please no lightsabers, and please don't turn this into an extension of TCW and Rebels and please don't cram it with fanboy jerkoff parts like R1...the last 2 episodes started to become a bit stale for me, sneaking into Imperial base/ship, dispatching stormtroopers etc...so I sat down and, okay, the scenery is good, then *BZZZZSHH and I'm like ah hell no here we go...
And it was pretty damn good this episode.
Never watched TCW or Rebels, but aware of a couple of characters (didn't know the other group of Mandalorians were from there until after the episode), so got some of the references and the characters worked in this story. The lightsaber fights I really liked. This is how the prequel fights should have been. More actiony and whatnot than the OT but not utterly ridiculous and over the top spinning jumping crap.
I really liked this. I hope that's where they stop with this and won't overdo it. Restraint worked miracles here, I hope they keep at it.
Was great to see Biehn.
He really should stay out of showdowns, poor bugger. I already see the blacksaber vs beskar rod fight though...and a Mark Hamill cameo as a jedi who comes to investigate after the magic mountain.

It seems like, regardless of what any potential intent of Din's mission was, it has solidly fallen into the realm of "the kid is a Jedi, leave him with the Jedi", instead of possible alternatives like "take this kid home, the Jedi either are his home, or they can take you to his home".

With that in mind, it doesn't actually serve the plot of the story for her to also throw in "and his mom was named X, and his home world is Y".
It would serve our greedy little psyche's, but not the story.

change of topic:
I think our earlier musings about Din's armor being some lesser form of beskar can at least be put to bed for his most recent full suit set up. It's taken a beating, blasters after blaster (some very very powerful blasters) and he has now used his gauntlets (the most techy potentially damageable part of the suit) to fend off multiple light saber barages.

It aint no bitch version of beskar. he's got the good stuff.

Maybe his old chest piece was something lesser, but he's got the serious stuff for sure now.
I think his old breastplate was beskar laminate, at best.

Maybe it's just me, but I have a feeling that Magistrate actress could pull off pretty convincing post-OT Leia, with some more makeup....

WTF?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Best and worst episode ever.

Ahsoka-Awesome. Don't know why the voice actress could not play her but I like Rosario Dawson so cool. Amazing and I have not watched much of the cartoons. Finally a Jedi being a kick ass Jedi. Not against stupid battle droids. Just bad guys.

Awesome fight with the ladies. I agree with the belief she was being careful not to kill her otherwise no match for Ahsoka.

Fight between Ahsoka and Mando awesome but she may want to make sure someone is her enemy before trying to kill them.

We actually learned something finally about this shows characters.

BTW ditch the stupid no take off helmet thing so we see Pedro, he can sleep comfortably, etc. This part is just stupid. The guy needs to shower, sleep comfortably, and it will be real hard really caring about and getting into this character like it is now. And yes I think Dredd never taking his helmet off is stupid,...........................................same to you.

BUT!!!!!!!!!!! we actually learn stuff about the child. Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And now the crap. Really don't see how creators with this talent do such stupid things.

Putting aside the Razor Crest getting totally fixed in one day in the last episode he appears to leave it unsecured again. Okay maybe locked it off screen.

Too stupid to live decisions:

Wasting the great Michael Biehn is unforgivable.

Going into any questionable situation without his jet pack is just stupid.

Anyone here ever gonna go into a situation you know may be very dangerous without one of your three top weapons? If you raised your hand you will die.

I love this show and that was an awesome ep but these stupid decisions of creators and characters need to stop.

Is that supposed to be a reference to anything in particular?
The owl is the spirit animal of "The Daughter". In the episode of CW "A World Between Worlds", Anakin, Ahsoka and Obi-Wan go to a planet where a father, a son and a daughter reside. The Son is essentially the spirit of the Dark Side, while the Daughter is the Light. Their father is the balance. The daughter's owl is named Morai. Needless to say, the Son kills Ahsoka. In order to save her, the Daughter gives up her life so that Ahsoka may live.

Since then, Ahsoka has basically been at one with the light side of the force. Even after she was no longer a jedi. She is the lawful neutral to Maul's chaotic neutral.

You find out later in Rebels that these 3 characters are a huge part of the entire universe.

I expected to be blown away by this latest episode. Despite my misgivings about Ashley Eckstein not even being given an audition for the role she originated, I was excited to see Ahsoka, but I found myself very underwhelmed by it.

When I watched this episode, I just saw a Togruta, I didn't see Ahsoka Tano. Her headtails shrunk back to her Clone Wars days (which we know from Shaak Ti isn't a thing), RD neither looks nor sounds like Ahsoka, she was a lot more violent than she's ever been, she carries herself differently, doesn't hold her sabers in her signature way, and the fight at the end was quite lethargic and boring.

I liked that we got a little backstory on Grogu (it's going to take a while to get used to that name lol) and the scenes between him and Din were very sweet and affecting.

I've only watched it once, so maybe another watch or two will help. But then I gave TLJ the same chance and it just kept getting worse for me, so who knows.

I will say that the montrals bugged me as soon as I saw them. But after a second watch, they're growing on me. I can only think that the crazy Shaak-Ti look was never practical, especially for Ahsoka's fighting style. Shaak-Ti was always in long flowing Jedi robes, where as Ahsoka only ever wears tight fitting leggings and "active" wear for her fighting style. Shaak-Ti barely ever moved, and was presumably much older than Tano. I'm sure Filoni will eventually say something about it. There has to be a practical reason. Otherwise, she was absolutely amazing.

I think that so many of us have a picture of what Ahsoka has always looked like, and to see a cartoon come to life that has been only a cartoon for so long is kinda...jarring. She is an acrobat and moves in a spider monkey fashion; It's hard to translate that to film. But, since she is creeping up in her later 40's, I'm going to assume her fighting style will drastically change.

And she does actually carry herself a lot like Rebels Ahsoka. In fact, the scene where she ignites her sabers behind the soldiers, is exactly like her fight with Vader:

Also, when she loses a saber, her fighting style resembles that of her younger years training. Her stance calls back to it. They also cleverly added her theme from CW, as she watches the Razor Crest fly away!

She is technically a Ronin ever since she was cast out the Order. As she's gotten older and seen more bs, it's only natural she's getting a little grinded down.

Regardless, I like this more reserved take on Ahsoka. It's exactly how she was in Rebels. Especially the end scene with Sabine. Hell, even her costume looks identical.

I'd like to know what the beads on her belt signify though. For a second I thought they were her padawan beads, but that doesn't make much sense.

I guess I'm a little confused at the shock over Thrawn. He's already been made an official part of the "new" EU, and this is the period of time he'd be dicking around in.

I just liked seeing the Gozanti in a live action production since it's one of my favorite Imperial ships. This was one of the things that I really like about Rebels, not every Imperial ship that we saw was a Star Destroyer. I hope that if we see more Imperial ships in this show we'll see more animated ships, like the Light Cruiser, and only one ISD with it being the flagship of Moff Gideon.
"I've outrun Imperial ships. Not the local bulk cruisers, mind you -- I'm talking about the big Corellian ships, now."

I'm assuming you didn't watch Rebels? He and Ezra were yeeted into uncharted space, into a possibly different time, by the Purrgil. The very end of Rebels has Ahsoka and Sabine, getting into Ahsoka's ship to go look for Ezra. Obviously Thrawn got out, and that means he might have Ezra prisoner.

That was the first thing I noticed. Her headtails had gorwn between TCW and Rebels. Seemed well on their way to Shaak Ti-level full growth -- which, cartoon to live-action they should definitely have been closer to. But she was pushing 30 in Rebels. Figure that'd be at least close to their final full extent. But my immediate thought when I saw her in this ep was "what the hell is wrong with her headtails?" They just instantly looked off to me.

People who haven't watched the cartoons won't know the difference, but what the hell, Dave? This is your Luke Skywalker, that you've nurtured and coaxed through two animated series. How'd you screw her up like this?

no idea, we've literally got no official stories about Luke in that period of time any more. the old EU doesn't fit anymore, so for all we know, the galaxy at large may barely even know about luke skywalker "force user", he may just be the pilot that blew up the death star, and gave an eye witness account of the emperor's death. I'd assume that Assoka doesn't even know he's a Jedi. If she knew he was a Jedi, wouldn't she have sought him out now that the empire is "gone"?

We were talking about this and the galaxy would certainly know exactly who Luke is and Ahsoka would certainly be aware of him. Why? The Rebels would be letting EVERYONE know that they had a Jedi Knight, the son of Anakin Skywalker (well known Clone Wars hero), on their side. It would be a HUGE morale boost and recruiting tool. The galaxy at large would have been more likely to know he's a Jedi Knight than that he was the one who blew up the Death Star. They may have released that too, but it would have put Luke at risk to let that be known before the Empire figured it out.

That was a huge let down for me that they didn't have Ahsoka make some comment about why she wouldn't send him to Luke (other than Mark Hamill being too old to play Luke at that age). The options are that Ahsoka wants nothing to do with the Jedi or that she is wary of Luke because of what happened to Anakin. As to the former, that can't be correct because Ahsoka directed him to Tython (sp?) and said some other Jedi might come. For the latter, she would probably be aware, again due to Rebel news, that Luke defeated the Emperor and Vader (galaxy doesn't know the truth probably), so that would probably prove to her that Luke is not Anakin. Certainly the Skywalker name should make her curious! But we got zilch!

Oh and that battle with that woman and Ahsoka seems improbable. There's most likely very few people, other than some martial arts, weapon experts, or combat droids, that can go toe-to-toe with a Jedi Knight. They just said she was like a shipbuilding magnate or something.

I noticed the difference as well but excuse it as the stylistic differences between animation vs Live action.

I was going to mention that. Didn't she say at the end of Rebels that she had a lead? Could this episode have taken place just before she headed back to pick up Sabine?

And I second the backdoor pilot. Ezra and Thrawn were thrown way way out there. She's trying to find Thrawn because that's where Ezra will be. Ezra could also be that 'other jedi' she referred to. Also, if someone snuck Grogu out of the temple, the clearly others escaped as well, so who knows who's out there. Don't think you'll see Mark Hamill since they'd have to de-age him 30ish years - which, while doable isn't exactly cheap.

I thought that was a great episode! What an exposition bomb! I think Filoni nailed it. I liked the samurai influence - after all, Lucas was influenced by the same stuff. So now that we have a Grogu, does all the licensed merch referring to The Child have to be taken off the shelves and replaced with Grogu merch?
