Star Trek (2009 J.J. Abrams movie) Phaser Defined Thread!

Hmm the Phaser is...ok, but it would look a lot better if it wasn't iPod Nano Chrome, and yeah, ditch the rotating barrel, other than that, not bad..

When I heard the thing rotated and changed colors and had little motors and lights in it, I have to admit I was expecting much more. I was thinking more like the gun arm of that metroid chick when it goes from blaster to missile, but much smaller and almost impossible for any normal prop guy to replicate. I can't say I'm not disappointed but it will work. I hope.

I really wanted this movie to be amazing, seeing as it's the first star-trek movie with a star-wars budget. From what I'm seeing it looks like it's going to be dawson's creek in space. Oh and we through in kerk and spock.

A Trek insider tells me that the Enterprise version below was an earlier prototype of the toy, but the version in USA TODAY is the final version.

Pumpernickel

OH, I think I'll just save time by gouging my eyes out with icepicks, NOW... :lol

One short circuit in the phaser and you end up shooting yourself.

I meant in the new movie phaser if the changing mechanism was damaged because you have a barrel pointed at you.

I know. It's just that these particular phasers aren't apparently any less practical in design than any of the previous ones.

In fact, if it's possible for them to switch settings without lowering the weapon to fiddle with it, they're actually an improvement.

It just seems incredibly contrived to me. They have made the phaser in to a cake decorator...you just change the tips.
What kind of pseudo science treknobabble will they have to come with to explain that the only REAL difference between STUN and KILL is the color of the nozzle. Too many things on this production seem forced and contrived for the sole purpose of making this 'JJ's Trek'. It doesnt feel necessary, it feels forced and prompted by toy sales.

The Only thing I can think is that the mechanics in each nozzle are different and there for change the energy levels of the blasts. Kind of like a step up converter of sorts. I can't say that I am crazy about the new design. Personally I think the main flaw is the rotating nozzle feature. I really hope they are not red and blue in the movie. Maybe only the blast color is different. Then again, it would be a good warning system so you don't accidently kill someone.

Dont real life military use color coded mags for blanks, live etc. A similar principle really. I think it's a nice touch myself it may also help the viewer to tell if the weapon they can see on screen is set to kill the bad guys or just stun them!

OMG This is the guy that made the prop! It has to be, look how he defends it!:lol

And what if in some future episode (like that's gonna happen) Kirk needs to fool an adversary into believe his phaser is on kill?

Abrams is supposed to be good at all this film stuff, i'm sure he think up a workaround. :)

:lol Yeah..and maybe the "red shirts" can be snap-away, so just when you think a guy in red shirt is a gonner, his shirt gets snapped off to reveal another color...and you can say thank God he's safe...that was a close one:lol:lol:lol JJ really fooled me:lol

No, we dont (at least not in the infantry). Some rounds (bullets) have colored paint on the tips that indicate what sort of round it is (ie a tracer round) but a blank round has a completely different shaped tip and is easily and readily identifiable as a blank by its shape. Magazines dont come in different colors.
Also, we dont have a 'stun' setting :)

Um... Oh! That's uh... OH.

Hideous. Yes that's the word.

So the red and blue barrels swivel around that vertical axis, huh. Well that's only slightly retarded, isn't it. :unsure

Tricorder. By way of Playskool, it looks like. Oh dear GOD tell me it doesn't actually say "TRICORDER" on it. What is this, Mego?

I can think of a few words but since younger RPF's may be reading
this I will hold back, may be bad for blood pressure

I think I will just not even bother to see this movie when it comes out

One can hope that that the force of the Universe reaches out
and turns all of the copies of this film to ash

Just because you don't like the toy versions of the props? Melodramatic much?

Its actually not 'stun' and 'kill'....its red and blue so you can set your phaser to democrat or republican.
