Star Trek (2009 J.J. Abrams movie) Phaser Defined Thread!

I agree with ya, but i like the phaser design, might be the only one, the pics we have now are of a toy, a playmates toy at that, just wait for the real prop

Well, there it is.
We now know what the phaser looks like.
I like the new costumes.
I like the new Enterprise.
I like the new cast.

Why does the phaser have to suck SO HARD?! :cry

Yeah, but the basic design looks a whole lot like every other phaser as well. Except the bloody "dustbusters."

isn't that the idea though, that all the production design reflect a modern take on TOS works?

personally, I don't care for new phaser, but I never liked phasers anyhow. This rotating barrel seems stupid to me. When I first heard "revolving/rotating" barrels, I saw something more like a revolver in my mind, something with all barrels pointing FORWARD.

But again, this isn't a deal breaker for me. I still want to see it.

The production design for this film looks like someone tried to get the rights to Star Trek and couldn't, so they made every thing look like it maybe, kinda might be Star Trek without actually being it. (You know, like Galaxy Quest)Hoping people wouldn't notice and just buy the product anyway.

For instance:

-That thing they're calling the enterprise.(can't bring myself to call it the Enterprise)

I can understand wanting to go with a retro futuistic look, and normally appreciate that, but honestly; big ram air induction scoops under the bussards? Or how about the grossly inproportionate components i.e. engines, saucer, secondary hull. It really does make the ship look like a parody of the Enterprise.

-Phaser:

Beyond the placement of the handle, in no way does that thing look like a phaser. In fact it looks like a cheap dollar store blaster, laser, ray gun, knock off. Personally I think they would've been better off with the guns they used in Galaxy Quest.

-Communicator:

Okay, I'm a huge fan of the original comm. While I'm not a fan of the look of this one it has at least two features I would expect. A flip top and a screen. The screen in my mind just makes sense, hell, we almost have those now. Although I would have put it where the moire was on the original but whatever.

-Tricorder:

Overall I like the look, it looks like a modern take on the old one with a dash of the Trek III Tric. thrown in.

Don't get me started on that bridge.... :sick

The story:

Here's the real important part. First, I have to say; those writers....ugh. I'm familiar with thier work so I don't hold out much hope for a coherent story or clever dialog and situations. There seems to be little or no backstory left intact for any of the original characters, while this may be a result of time tampering, I think this is a huge cop out. They could have just as easily incorporated what was already known about the original crew.

So, those are my gripes. Goofy design, very little resemblence to the original characters, Or the Trek universe I grew up with.

Having said all that, I'm still going to buy the ship toy for kitbash fodder.

No, we dont (at least not in the infantry). Some rounds (bullets) have colored paint on the tips that indicate what sort of round it is (ie a tracer round) but a blank round has a completely different shaped tip and is easily and readily identifiable as a blank by its shape. Magazines dont come in different colors.
Also, we dont have a 'stun' setting :)

I'm sure i've seen soldiers on the range with color coded magpuls to indicate live etc. Oh well could be wrong it has been known! :)

Just the lighting makes it look better... I still dont really like the red/blue of the barrels, but I'm hoping they're clear and only light up when fired on the actual prop...

I love the design, but I don't believe for a second that that's the movie prop they are using. I bet it's a toy or something. It looks like a watergun.

I think it's a simplified version somehow, but I do NOT believe that is what they are going to be holding in the movie.

Here's a little less glare, the color pulled out and the "Twister" spinner emitter covered.

Still looks like a cheap knock-off to me...

I'm guessing the thumb wheel is what changes the setting?

Yeah, because the original engineering set had one...er, wait. It didn't. It was just a simple bi-level set with blinky lights. I think filming in a brewery would be a step up...

Yeah, I was thinking about this earlier... they could explain it as deuterium tanks or somesuch. Heck they might CG a set in so who knows how it will look.

The stylized arrowhead on the side is an... interesting... choice. (If it was mentioned earlier, my apologies.)

In this new Trek universe, Starfleet has to have their insignia on everything they make. That way there's no mistaking it's theirs.

We might just see some warp-capable Starfleet delta shields flying around in the movie! :unsure
