Star Trek (2009 J.J. Abrams movie) Phaser Defined Thread!

Im guessing the thumbwheel is to change images in the big round ball. Thats what it appears to be lined up with not the hinge which seems to be a simple flip mechanism.

The prop has the black back too, I think. It's just really thin. The toy of course has to frak up the proportions because that's what they're paid to do. :lol

Dunno about the thumbwheel, I guess that's the flip-open mechanism on the toy. The prop probably has a hidden button.

Again, JJ would have been BETTER off with a nebulizer .....!"

Well, he DID say his inspiration was Galaxy Quest...personally, I prefer GQ TOS.

I agree with Onigiri, the Phaser looks like it should be hanging on a peg hook at the dollar store.

But you know, how much you wanna bet, that as obviously toylike it is, there still will be pricks who run conventions that won't let you wear one.

As I said at Trekmovie it looks like all of these prop and set designs were lifted from the old Gold Key Comics. They all lack the 'character' of our beloved props . Seriously, go pop open some old Gold Key Trek comics and see if you dont see more in common with the props and sets there then with TOS.
Hmmmmmmmmm apparently the new tricorder doesnt require a screen...readings to be taken by understanding beeps, tweets, whistles and sequencing leds....
"Will he be all right, Bones?"
"Let me check, Jim, give me a sec while I run this pepper mill over his chest...and *blink, blink, whrrrrrrrrrr, beep, beep, click flashy flashy blink beep*....nope, he's dead Jim."

:lol:lol:unsure:cry What a rollercoaster this has been so far. What a shame. I hate to see a franchise with such promise go to such a low. I guess maybe JJ spent the bulk of money on effects, rather than props. Maybe he is trying to make a Trek Michael Bay movie?:cry I know it's still early and hopefully the actual props put out will be far superior to what we have seen so far, but it's hard to stay optimistic about this. Of course I will still hope for the best and see the movie.

The funny thing about toys is that they sometimes appear toy-like.

I find the XI communicator and tricorder designs to be dull as dishwater. The phaser, on the other hand, has a lot of character, and looks great in action.

And for the last time, the actual prop is NOT CHROME. It is dull stainless steel, with a lot of TOS blue-grey accents. It has a somewhat worn appearance, not unlike a real gun that's seen some use. Those who assert the screen prop has the same surface tone and texture as the toy version simply don't know what they're talking about.

Who is saying that?
People are commenting on how cheap and 'chromey' the toy looks.
Physically these toys are fairly accurate representations of what the real props look like. The rotating barrel (which apparently doesnt work real well on the real props) really seems like it was designed with making a toy in mind. It will be interesting to see if these toys are successful. I personally have no plans to buy them. Im abstaining, not because I think the designs arent 'trek enough' but because the designs are boring and/or ugly.

Valid points everyone:
phaser -- barrel pointed towards user, chrome finish, cheesy dollar-store ripoff

Not singling you out, Chronos, but your post just happened to be the most convenient. This complaining about the barrel pointed toward the user is retarded. It's no different than the chamber end of a regular barrel. The rotating barrel just focuses and the actual firing chamber is probably right above the grip. This is just a case of people grasping at something to complain about.

Even down to the size? Because Playmates has had some issues with that in the past...

I'll agree with you on the phaser, but I rather like the tricorder.

Yeah, I'm holding back judgment right now until we see a pic of the actual prop phaser. But all of this talk, but positive and negative, is pretty exciting. :lol

Oh it's starting to grow on me. Yeah I think I'm starting to like it. I don't think it would take much now for me to like it more than the assault phaser.

Anybody else ?

I was starting to warm up to the Phaser, but that swinging tip is simply retarded beyond words.

I want to know who designed these, so I make sure I never support them in any fashion.

It just seems incredibly contrived to me. They have made the phaser in to a cake decorator...you just change the tips.
What kind of pseudo science treknobabble will they have to come with to explain that the only REAL difference between STUN and KILL is the color of the nozzle. Too many things on this production seem forced and contrived for the sole purpose of making this 'JJ's Trek'. It doesnt feel necessary, it feels forced and prompted by toy sales.

Well, I'm not a big phaser nut anyway, so...
I would not likely get one even if it was the most awesome of all awesomly awesomness anyway!
I am a self admitted communicator addict. I like them in all shapes and forms (Except Trek II). I'll get that.
The tricorder, I think it's a cool design and all, but I'll wait until a proper bootlegged replica becomes available before I pick one up.

Huh. What happens with the TOS or TNG phasers while you're adjusting the setting with those little paper wheels or buttons with LED meters? How many times can the other guy fry you?
I meant in the new movie phaser if the changing mechanism was damaged because you have a barrel pointed at you.
