Wait, what book are you talking about.

I love that though. The design is great.

The way I see it is that the movie can be good even if the new props/sets/enterprise/etc... all suck. It does come down to the story telling. Lets face it, there have been good and bad designs in all of the movies and series. Look at the Start Trek II communicator :sick, that was just a box but STII was still one of the best movies in my opinion. This will be no different. If the props are cheesy it just means I have to send MR a little less of my money. :lol

Let face it, thinking that the props are going to be iconic like the classic TOS props is simply unrealistic. From the description it sounds like they would be just as at home in an episode of SG:Atlantis or any other sci-fi show (like the photo of the new bridge). I am thinking they will be like the Phase Pistol, cool but nothing ground breaking. I am certainly not going to boycott the film based on the props and sets. I will be there opening day to check it out.

And this movie does not 'erase' anything that came before it nor does it supercede it.The JJ universe is what happens when folks go back in time and muck around and other folks go back in time to try and maintain as much of the timeline's integrity as possible. In teh end you end up with a new timeline. Cmon folks this is NOT new to trek. Countless episodes have shown through the years divergent timelines and realities. This gives the JJ 'verse an opportunity to gives us a new look at beloved old characters WITHOUT saying what we've seen before didnt happen. I for one think its a great way to honor the original without being hamstrung by it AS LONG AS the story is good. If it sucks as a movie it wont because the Protector...errrr....I mean Enterprise and the Nebulizer....ummmm .... I mean PHASERS.... look different. Remember that this will either be the reinvigoration of teh franchise or its death knell so think about that while youre deciding whether to boycott or support this movie...
I will be at the premier as I have for every single Trek movie since TMP and teh quality of the movie will determine how many times I see it after that but I will, for the good of the franchise, show my support opening day.

Lol, you have no idea how hard it is to be as big a Trek fan as I am, and yet be prohibited from discussing the new film in any detail.

Just curious, do you think you're winning any friends here by CONSTANTLY pointing that out? If you really can't say anything, maybe you should do just that, and say nothing. yah, we all get it. You know something. Or at least claim to. We get it. I think you came to the wrong party if you think you're going to impress a lot of folks by telling us again and again that you can't tell us anything. Know what I mean?

But back on topic, I have to say that I'm TOTALLY on board with the folks that say it matters not what the ship, props, costumes, or set design look like. It will not be those factors that make or break the movie. JUST LIKE it wasn't the crappy sets, cheesy acting, and awful special effects that dictated the popularity of the original series. it'll be all about the story, and if we can connect with the characters. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE to see a beautifully designed movie with great costumes and actors. But if I'm not drawn into the story, none of that will amount to a hill of beans.

I have to say I'm also kind of amused by the folks that are condeming the movie based on a few photos, and what they've heard about how it's going to be. This same, tired old dance was trotted out when BSG started ramping up again, when Sarah Conner chronicles was announced, and any other number of really great projects that were pooh-pooh'd completely independent of knowing anything about them, or what the quality was like. i would have THOUGHT that a sophisticated audience like the one we have here would be a little more open minded to the new trek, but I suppose it should come as no surprise.

It CERTAINLY comes as no surprise to learn that micdavis has condemned it. But then, he condemns EVERYTHING :) Myself included :p

Iphone tricorders are to be expected. Some of the ST tech was already looking like Iphones anyway.

More PDA-ish to me. Anyone know if they were using a PDA?

Back on topic... I am looking forward to the new designs and what kind of toy props will come out of this.

Not even close.

You do realize that you're not the only one that has seen the real ones right ? In fact, I know there are about five people who have seen, worked on and touched it, who actively post here - Yet, I don't see them talking about it, getting off on teasing folks around here. Yes, its an amazingly beautiful piece, but you parade around like you're the only one here.

A buddy of mine just sent me this.

He said it's based on some of the descriptions floating around. God, I hope it looks nothing like that.

The patented 3-in-1 phaser 2. Also comes with optional oil dispenser.

I have to agree with others that I'm surprised at the level of vitriol toward this film without even a trailer yet. OK, there WAS a teaser, and even that couple seconds of the front of the ship caused a meltdown among the purists. I will keep an open mind right up until I see the film. Then, if it tanks, who cares what the bridge design was? Now, personally, I don't really care for the look I'm seeing. However, I'm hopeful that the story will be so good, I won't care.

I am curious about the whole timeline thing. How do Kirk and crew end up on the newly-built Enterprise? Pike was in command for quite a while and he was the second Captain after April. Alternate timeline perhaps? And, with alternate timelines often comes alternate art direction. Plus we know Pike is in the film too. So, some earlier adventure throws this raw team of cadets together, they save the day, time is restored and years later when a more seasoned Kirk is offered command of the Enterprise when Pike steps down, he hand-picks a crew of familiar faces? And maybe we even see a bridge and ship that are more familiar to the TOS era? Could happen.

Score one for the FNG! Seriously Matt and Maul, ease up on the guy, who the frack cares what any of us "Preceive" as his agenda? WTF, who cares? So he likes to tease stuff, BFD, so do a ton of other self important a-holes around here! :)
