SDCC08 - Dr WHO Replicas!

That would have been nice. In the end, however, I'm just glad that I have a sonic! I've been drawing up plans for a display for it. Soon as I get another project finished up, I'll give that a go.

It's funny, on another board, someone asked me for the measurements on the thing. The usual, take pictures by a ruler, etc. I replied to them that I had paid $430.00 for those measurements and I was going to keep all of it's secrets.

Jerk, maybe, but why give away the dims?....
Not at all. Why assist a re-caster? Especially after the emotional and financial investments you've made.
I almost forgot to reply to these posts! :$

Anyway... first off, I personally won't call it "recasting" if he's just using the dimensions to produce his own. Recasting would be the act of taking an existing replica (MFX's, for example,) disassembling it, making molds of all the parts, and then producing his own replicas using those molds. :thumbsdown

That being said... I know some of you are probably sick of seeing this picture, since I've posted it probably 15 times, but take a closer look at the picture of MFX's 2 prototypes... pay particular attention to what they're laying on...

Looks like some sort of graphing paper, to me. Now, if someone could ID the EXACT sort of graph paper in that photo, they would then have all the information they'd need in regards to the dimensions! ;)

But somehow, I doubt this alleged "recaster" is that bright. :rolleyes

I've been reading this thread forever now, and I just wanted to say how much I feel for MFX and Neill for the amount of grief these sonics must be making for them, just as they must have thought they'd finished them and had to maill them out, the LED problems ( which compared to the skills of making the whole screwdriver are pretty minimal ) have made this a worldwide logistical nightmare, IMHO.

I really hope they actually make some money out of it once everyone's got their sonic and it works, it must be pretty miserable at their end, and I'm impressd with the way they're dealing with it all.

And no, I don't work for MFX!

Laters,

Andy

If I should discover any problems with my Sonic, I may go ahead and pay to ship it to them, as long as they'll pay to ship it back. That would reduce their costs a bit, and every little bit helps, I figure.

But so far I've discovered no problems, and I'm crossing my fingers, hoping that remains the case. Right now, I'm looking into getting a display plaque custom-made by an RPF member to go in the display case with it. :cool

Hopefully you lucked out and got a non faulty LED :)

Look forward to seeing your plaque! I may see about getting one, especially to go with my Baker as well.

I'm gonna be buying 2, one for the Baker, one for the Tennant. But I won't be finalizing the order for a couple months. Gotta wait 'til after Christmas.

The ones I'm gonna have made will have a similar appearance to the one mounted on the display stand for the officially licensed replica of the 4th Doctor's sonic screwdriver. :)

Right now, I'm trying to decide whether or not I should put a line on the plaque for the MFX one indicating that it's a limited edition of 500. And if I do, how should I handle the numbering? Just put 1 of 500? Or should I make up a number based on my order number (i.e. 321 of 500)? :confused

Oh well, I've got a couple months to think about it. :)

Thanks Andy

Not been the best couple of weeks. Always dissapointing to have a hiccup like that. We're pretty happy these niggles are resolved now.

All in all it's been about 15%-20% of the sonics that have had a problem. Not an out and out disaster but higher percentage than we would have liked obviously. Just one of those things that happens when you start putting even the simplest electronics in to a prop but we're pretty happy that it's completely resolved now.

Obviously anyone who does have a faulty one just contact us via the website email (please, not me directly through this forum as I don't have your details to hand, as I don't handle orders and shipping, and I often don't check PM's for days!) and we'll return and replace your sonic immediately. Alternately anyone disatisfied with that then just return it and we'll make a full refund.

Apart from the LED hiccup we've had a terrific repsonse to the sonic. Everyone seams happy with it (except for one person in China but let's not go there :rolleyes:lol) and I just want to thank the RPF members for their continued support and patience.

Best Wishes
Neill

P.S. It's CNC milled, not die cast!

Wonder if anyone here would be willing to make nameplates for these things?

I'd Recommend GATORBAIT9696 for display plaques. His work is excellent and he's very patient with you if you want to make changes to the designs etc.

Mine should be back to the UK tomorrow again. Third time is the charm. MFX offered me a refund and I said NO THANKS! I want my sonic. Aside from the little LED niggle, this thing is PERFECTION! I also sent them a note to please NOT replace my sonic, just repair the one I sent as I LOVE the one I got from them. The head is placed in just the right position, I even love the crackle finish on mine. (It's heavier on one side than it is on the other)

So, take as long as it takes to fix her up, then send her back. I'll be waiting.

And when it comes back I get to :eek:love all over again!

MFX, a most dedicated group, the whole of them!

Just one more thing. CNC milled, die cast.... Don't care either way! It's METAL and EXACTLY what I wanted!

Wrong song! "Metal Who", you seek "Metal Who"! :)

As for the plaques... yeah, GATORBAIT9696 is the RPF member to seek out. Not hard to find him, he has a HUGE thread over in the Junkyard! :cool:thumbsup

But, you know, since I was the one that brought it up, you guys could have let ME be the one to mention him by name! No big deal, I'm just saying, is all. ;)

Neill, thanks for the update. I'm glad to hear the percentage was as small as 15-20%. Going by the admittedly few people that we've heard from both here and at Gallifrey Base, the percentage seemed larger than that. But again, that's only a small sampling out of the hundreds of people that bought one.

Quick question for you, Neill: Is there anyone I can know for sure, WITHOUT it failing first, whether or not mine was one of the ones with faulty components? :confused

So far it's worked flawlessly, so short of playing with it a whole lot more, I'm wondering what way, if any, exists for me to know for sure. I know it was shipped on October 12th, with the improved description on the Customs Declaration, if that helps at all.
