DR Who-Sonic Design Competition (winners announced)

Thank you very much! I did make one of these on my 3D printer. I decided it should be a little larger than specs, but have yet to remake it with that in mind.

Pleasure Sir! :)

Any chance of seeing pictures of the results from yours experiments on the 3D printer?

What material/colour had you imagined it. to me it looks like bone. Ah a sonic made from a dead Timelord, now, that would be interesting! ;)

Have you posted a thread with it? I'd love to see it.

I need to see if the PM's I sent with my picks are still around or not.

Nope. The PM's I sent about it are long gone. I don't think I kept a record of them either. I've asked Rassilon if he had a record of my votes. If he does I'll share.

I will say that when I voted I ignored screen names completely and just looked at designs. My only person bias was if it looked too much like a lightsaber then it lost points. Although 11's sonic is sort of lightsaber sized it isn't lightsaber-like to my eyes if that helps things make any sense.

Just PM'd you your picks.

Thanks! Here are the picks I made, I ignored the names of who posted them until I had the images in an order:

There were 8 designs that really screamed "original sonic screwdriver design" at me. The hard part was putting them in an order that would end up eliminating three from the running. Despite that here are my votes in order and the points they get.

5 points for Doctor49152
4 points for Firejetmanguy
3 points for justinaalt
2 points for jedibugs
1 point for Muldwych

The three that I also like but didn't make the top five are tullfan81, cephalopodprods and Organic Mechanic.

Honored to have gotten TWO mentions in this little revival!

For those interested, that design may well become a reality in the near future. ;)

Now, my question is: What were the criteria for assigning points? Was it just "I like this design 3 points worth." or was it more specific?

I'm starting to formulate my next design already. Just in case we do another of these!

Ha, ha! me too. Wish I had the time to build mine, have been collecting bits for it, but havent found a mini chrome telescope of chrome telescopic tube I can use for the main section.

Wow, I got a point :) many thanks for that GW tis good to know.

Yeah good question. For me The reason I chose my top 3 were because I thought want that, & I can really see it as a Sonic. My winner also had the 'blimey that really is something different factor'.

Then get to doodling! People were designing things long before the computer came around. This is just new tools for the same job. :cool:thumbsup

I agree, just do it I cant do all the computer stuff & im sure the judges dont look at it in that way. They may stand out at 1st glance but its about the design not the gloss, look at those that came 2nd & 3rd. All different. If you are worried about your doodles, get a friend to tidy it up for you. best of Luck!

For me it was about the same but in reverse. I was looking for something that carried the essence of being a sonic screwdriver but without being too derivative of existing designs (or too easily mistaken for a lightsaber) unless it was a synthesis that really honored what came before.

That and paying attention to the designs only and ignoring who contributed them (so as to be as impartial as possible) it was still hard as hell to really eliminate any of the entrants. Every one I looked at had elements in it that made it great, unique and really could be a fantastic prop. Eventually I had to start narrowing it down by looking at each one and trying to imagine it as a physical object as Professor Rubbertoe, Rassilon, Russ or any of the others here would make it. Then, as I saw each in my head, I tried to imagine a future Doctor or an unrealized alternate Doctor holding it. That didn't make it easier but it did make some designs pop more in my head than others. That done I had to start whittling down and ordering. It was painful to have to push some from the narrowed list and then more so to cut it down to just five and order them.

Despite all that I think I made the best decisions I could. I'm really, hoping Rassilon's work schedule allows him to finish the winner sonic and maybe even have room for some of the runners up to contract him for theirs too. In the end everyone that contributed did an amazing job and I hope we get to do this again. The contest was great, the people contributing designs and to the thread in general were all great and we really did something as a community that worked out fantastic.

I was the runner up, and my design was completely hand-drawn. You're communicating a design. It's not a render contest.

Sadly as an animator I can make my ideas faster in 3D than with a pencil. In fact I am horrible at sketching... and I mean HORRIBLE!! :)

I'd say for the next contest like this maybe only one person gets sent the images and that same person posts them to the contest forum without any names attached. That way to the rest of the people it's as anonymous as possible. Ideally a way to bar people from then commenting 'that ones mine!' would be helpful too.

Ideally as well judges wouldn't have access to the topic area until the submission end date passes. So they all see everything with a new set of eyes at the same time.
