SDCC08 - Dr WHO Replicas!

Well, I've tracked mine since I shipped it back on the 26th. They got it today, this morning, fixed it, put it back in the post and shipped it out TODAY! FedEx says I should have it back tomorrow. The 7 hour difference works in your favor when shipping back!

I didn't think it would be done this quick. But I'm guessing they popped the lense off, de-soldered the LED, soldered a new one on and put the lense back on, then presto-shipo, out it goes.

Whuhoo!

Definitely some good news! :cool:thumbsup

Well, I received my sonic today, and it is wonderfull. Some quick opinions:

Pros:

-Very solid feeling
-Screen Accurate
-Officially Licensed
-Good construction
-Great customer service

Cons:

-Finish on emmiter head is different than other aluminum areas of Sonic
-Slider is 'loose'. Will extend or retract under its own weight.

Overall, I am very happy with this replica, and it will be a center pice of my collection for many years to come.

Wonder if anyone here would be willing to make nameplates for these things?

How about this?
1mm aluminium - similar in size to the MR standard plaques.
Included with an angled acrylic stand with four rubber feet.

I'd need 25 to make this happen.
Over 25 and the price will drop.

Price will be £12.50 shipped outside U.K.
U.K. will be £12 shipped.
If you need just the plaque, price will be £11 shipped worldwide.

Neill - if you would like your company logo and name removed, then no problem!

It needs the official logo from the series, in my opinion. Other than that, looks good! :cool:thumbsup

I have already contacted GATORBAIT9696 several days ago and worked out with him what I want my custom made plaque to look like, as I had a somewhat different design idea in mind. You all will see it when I receive it and take some pictures. :)

HOWEVER... Howard, you make mention of the plaque holders/stands, which is something I WILL be needing! Can you make those to any size, if I were to give you the dimensions of the plaque in question? :confused

If so and if we can work something out for me to purchase 2 of those stands from you, let me know and I'll PM you for more info when I'll be needing them. The clear acrylic look will go perfectly with the way I'm displaying the MFX sonic (as seen in pictures I posted several pages back) and will also go perfectly with the way I plan to display my 4th Doctor sonic from the RPF's russrep. :cool

I agree with Jack, it needs to be the official Doctor Who logo. I would also change the text to Season (Series) Four Sonic Screwdriver rather than naming the actor.

I would be in given those changes.

After playing with the toy for so long that surprised me too...however in watching episodes from the series David sometimes has a finger on the neck on the prop when not on the button...my assumption is that just the weight of the head pulls it. It was strange for me at first too!

I'm reliable informed that the original prop used a ring of masking tape around the raised part of the battery housing to hold the sonic open and closed. without that, it will slide up and down too easily. If it was machined tighter then the acrylic rod would get scratched by the housing.

As to the accuracy, which our chinese friend has complained about compared to the DK book version, he is right, the accuracies differ, but this is due to the DK book version being an early series three version of Tennants sonic (as can be evidenced by the single wire running up the tube). MFX have faithfully copied the series 4 sonic which was completely overhauled and remade after series three wrapped. The series 4 sonic does differ very slightly in the machining as it was made to be far more robust than the older versions, and a few were made, although I cannot remember how many (three?). You can see them doing this and talking briefly about it on the Series 3 box set extras. MFX have reproduced this latest version to the finest detail bar none. Side by side to the prop you would not notice the difference. This version is also used in the specials and we will see Matt Smith using it in his first episode next year.

And if anyone wants to make the paint more robust, several thin coats of Ren wax will sort that out.

Someone's got themselves a working Tardis and not sharing, eh? :lol

*******************SPOILER**************

Highlight to read...

People moan when I put spoilers up, but as we all know a new sonic is being used, it's probably safe for me to say that Tennants Sonic does not survive Matts first episode, and blows up. He got burnt on set during that scene.

For some reference, here is a photo from a few high resolution images I obtained of the Series 4 promotional shoots:

And here it is compared to my sonic:

Now the lighting is not fair as David is being professionally shot with a strobe and mine is at my desk with a flash, but the other details stand out. Including the ball joint further into the socket of the teeth, the head not being so elongated and the colour is pretty close in comparison. Even the finish of the head looks similar ;)

Awww, but... (highlight)

It should survive in some way or form because he needs to modify it to give to River Song :cry

He still will have that one technically... ;)

Yup, they nailed it. On the prop in the pro shoot - did the twisted wire get replaced with a rod?

I assume that they drivved the hole, but never cleaned it out? I know you need to do something...perhaps it was in haste for the shoot?

I'm suspecting that we'll see them doing Matt Smith's sonic before long...

If they weren't the ones that built it in the first place. Considering MFX has a history with the show that wows to start (how many people thought the cat masks were CGI because your brain would not accept someone could make a mask that convincing) and also proved themselves by making a sonic screwdriver that (despite the LED issue with under a quarter of them) wowed a bunch of moaning detail nazi pisspots like us...the Beeb would be brain dead not to approach them to build the latest incarnation of my favorite prop.

Might also be the reason the current sonic is limited and in-house. The new design seems to lend itself better to make in bulk and big enough to hold a sound chip too. It would be cool if MFX did make the new version, if they then released that model commercially, you couldn't ask for anything more screen accurate.

I doubt we will see Rivers sonic though, the cost to make that puppy would be huge.

Incidently, the preview screening for Waters of Mars happened last night. It's certainly not for kids and reports from fans and non fans are very very positive.
