Limited Run Rey's Quarterstaff (Star Wars: Force Awakens) Resin Kit (First Pulls Pg 5)

Still not convinced at the length of the sling.

Look at the staff in this image:

Zoom in and look at the seam that joins the two piece of strap together, In order for it to be in that location, I estimate that about 10 to 12 inches needs to be trimmed off.

Comments.

I'm open to disagreement but I would like to see some replicate the way their sling looks in that picture in both seam and buckle location in order to convince me.

Note the placement of the buckle then note the how the bottom of the sling still pulls upward. It doesn't droop downward first. Estimating based on those factors and the amount of slack in the sling, The sling as is might be about 8 to 10 inches too long.

I remember how while I was in the Navy, I used to wash my cotton web belt right after I bought them and not cut them until after they dried. If you cut them to size first and then washed them, you would end up with a shorter belt due to shrinkage.

So before I cut this sling down to size, I soaked it in hot water for about 30 minutes. It is now I the dryer in high heat. I am hoping that will take the some of the excess length out of the sling.

UPDATE:

That worked great.

Everybody is a different height, and may or may not want the sling longer/shorter depending upon their physique.

I am the same height (roughly) as Daisey, but unlike her I have a much larger bust. So if I want to be able to sling the staff crossways across my chest, I need more length than she does to make that possible.

The good news is that it's all fixable. :)

I'm not looking to wearing or replicate it as she is wearing it. I am going after the look, length and adjustment of the strap as it looks when she is holding it or wielding it. There is some slack but there is not a lot of excess.

The problem I noticed with the strap as in a new condition is that if you put the buckle somewhere in the middle, It still droops way too much. If you try to adjust it as much as you can, the buckle is all the way at the end and you have that ugly seam visible at the front of the strap.

My thinking is that the prop department may have used a actual used surplus strap or went through a process in which it did get wet and shrink up. The shrinkage i achieved in the strap is quite similar to the length I am seeing on the screen used prop. Additionally, Even with shrinkage, there is still plenty of adjustment available to give room for even a large chested individual.

You may be right. It's very likely that it got wet, and in the extreme heat of the desert shrank it. I like this thought, and it definitely looks smaller in the pic. I'll try to shrink mine, and see how it works.

Great job JUSTINIAN I would love a deluxe kit of you have one available still? I'm ready to pay now, my wife wants to dress as Rey this Halloween, and getting her screen accurate props that I can display in my theater while not in use is perfect!

Ordered my deluxe kit, cannot wait to build this! In preparation I'm trying to gather the necessary supplies. What are some recommendations for glue for adhering the resin to the wooden dowel? Thanks!

For best results, you should spray the dowel with filler primer, to get rid of the wood grain. Super glue is fine to hold the parts in place. Your kit should go out tomorrow.

I used Gorilla Glue (not the two part). I like it because it does not dry instantly so you get time to work with it. You also have to wet the contact areas because the glue creates a foam. When it dries, you may have some foam excess but it is easily trimmed off with a utility knife.

I've also used it to affix the metal pipe to the war club of my gaffi stick and the accurate strap my Yavin medal.

I can't believe I was fortunate enough to have Adam Savage and Greg Grunberg build one of my Rey staff kits on a recent episode of Geeking Out. It's truly an honor knowing that one of my kits will be among Adam's amazing collection.

I also have a few more kits available.
