Rey Alternate Outfit? (possible spoilers)

Owlfeathers, how did you felt your fabric?

Your mockup up is looking good. I worry that the top is coming too close together in front though. Hers stays open more. But maybe it's just the dress form?

Okay, I finished my vest. Overall, I'm fairly pleased with it. The herringbone pattern is so perfect! Now, in some lights it looks lighter, and in others darker, I guess it just depends. As far as the felting went...Yeah, I thought it had worked, but I was wrong. When I order fabric for my next commissioned version, I will try some experimentation on it. Honestly, I the shape feels a wee bit off, but that could be the fabric. I kinda wanna try a felt version next!

yeah it does look grey in the movie, it's difficult to tell as the lighting will have picked up on the colder tones given the island location. But if you can find a wool herringbone in a stone colour it would probably be the closest bet. The problem with pure grey is that they can look very chemical and artificial, whereas a pebble-stone grey has a hint of beige to keep it natural looking.
I'd love to give the jacket a go, but a bit intimidated by the strange pattern.
Looking forward to seeing how others might approach it :)

it does look good the back and sides are perfect but I thought the blanket stitch thread was just a tiny bit lighter than the fabric not that bright. And the lower half looks smaller. In the movie it looks like there could be a zipper in it and it wouldn't change the shape of the vest much.

I too am a bit confused about "felting", as I've not done that before. are we really just talking about washing it and letting it dry, ir is there an agitation to it, or some other process?

I mean I think I get what the end goal is... I have made several of my Ren Faire garments from wool army blankets, and after a few years of having worn them and having got them damp and let them dry, the wool looks very, well... wooly. So I understand what we're going for, but don't understand the process of making this happen instantly.

Any hints?

So, how I've seen felting done in the past is to lay fibers out on a netting, cover it with another netting, then massage it on a flat surface with soapy water, to agitate the fibers into clinging together. Like here:

Since the fibers in a fabric are already connected, I'm sure you could just rub it down with water and detergent to get some felting (at least that is my plan). I've also heard of throwing wool garments into the washing machine run on hot, then lay it out to dry flat. I'm planning on hand felting, since I've got a small amount of fabric to work with (thrifted coat) and don't want to risk the entire thing in the wash.

So, after staring at both my vest and photos I had on my computer I decided to take apart the vest and fix the shape, the shoulder pads and the blanket stitching. Here are some photos of mt process to help you guys out!

I recut the shoulder pads. These are two pieces each and on the back of each set, I sketched out the shape and the placement of my quilting. Next I popped it in the machine and used a basting stitch, in red to stand out.

Next, I sewed the two pieces together, added the batting, then pinned in place so that nothing moved. Then I went back to my grey thread and stitched over the red basting stitching. When I was all done, I removed the basting. After I was done, I placed and pinned down the pads. I stitched the top edge in the machine and stitched over the quilting once more to get the correct raised look. Over all, I have very pleased with the outcome. I know the blanket stitching is still a wee bit light, but, I like the look!

NOW! As for the felting. I am experimenting with the leftover fabric which I will use for the gauntlets. As far as I have read, by boiling the fabric with detergent, then rinse with cold, you will get the correct effect! I'll let you guys know how it goes!!!

I only think it is because it seems to be the right shape and size but it needs a canvas strap. The rest that there are available are not shown with an average person so getting perspective is not possible

Just wanted to say - been lurking on this build thread for a while and the progress you guys have made has been absolutely astounding with the amount of reference you've had to go on. Some really great results as well, inspiring stuff.

Thanks! I hope it's been a help to others! For me, it's become a minor obsession lol

Depending on where you look.

Once the Gearheads discovered what the bag was they bought them up (originally around $5 a piece) then started selling them for $50-150 each.
Some of these guys are hoarding hundreds of them in their closets.
What Price Glory sells replicas for $36 and real ones for $45.
You can probably find them cheaper in England or one of the Commonwealth countries that made them during WWII.

I love you guys so much! I have now spend way to much time looking at a crappy cam rip over that bag to mention.
Now I have many many beautiful source pictures to work from.

I'm thinking of scratch-building myself one of those bags and am busy putting the pattern together.
Here is a couple of thoughts:

I agree with @kristenhenry70, that bag is a mess!

I think however that it is not wider at the top but that there are something thick stuffed into the bottom, causing it to belly out.

I'm going to use cotton duck canvas dyed light brown/khaki. The color looks more ww1. The canvas has quite a bit of flex to it.

I think it is made from 2 different colors of brown canvas. The bottom darker than the top. This could be from the lighting and the bottom could be made from ?dark leather?. Though why you would do that is a question.
Untitled-1.jpg

The strap is a thicker sling than the staff, stitched to a wider flat piece of ?webbing or canvas?

The side stitches ends before the opening casing it flap a lot bigger than the lid-flap was made for. There is no seam stitched around the mouth

The clasps on the bag is way to strong for just a bag. They look like they belong to a safety belt or parachute.

From what I see it looks like this:

That's it for now. What do you think? What have I gotten wrong? Where can I find those clasps?
