Rey Alternate Outfit? (possible spoilers)

Keep an eye on the $9 one. I'm the last one who purchased it and it sounds like she might have more, she might not have relisted it yet. I often forget to do that right away when I'm selling on Etsy. I'm hoping so myself, as I have two commissions for this and this fabric is SO perfect!

I just contacted her and she said that unfortunately she got that fabric at an estate sale so she can't get it restocked. The search continues!

Awe man, so that was the last of it?! That sucks. Okay, well, I'll help you look, as I'll be needing to find a source still for my commissions!

My initial thought was that it was a gas mask bag, but when I was told it was a signal bag I scrapped that idea, but now, I'm wondering, could it be what I thought before, a gas mask bag?

A few bags I found searching on eBay to help you ladies out. Interested in the bag as a possible satchel for my wife as a EDC. Here are the links:

The one above has what seems to be the right flap and shape. The straps is not located in the right spot and it obviously needs a few other things added.

Looking at it again, im wondering if it just doesnt look bigger on top because it has something stuffed into the bottom.

Okay, I discovered something new with the gauntlets!!! So, someone posted their version over in Rebel Legion in grey felt, and I was eyeing the scalloped edges of her gauntlets and how nicely they fell. This made me go back and look at the photos we had again, and I found that the upper material used in the gauntlet is the same as the vest, but the bottom of the gauntlets are actually felt and are attached. Here are a couple of photos that show what I discovered. You can even see how the edges are clearly felt!

So now that we know this, what kind of stitch would you use to attach this? I think I have an idea, but I'd love to hear other's thoughts!

Strap looks like it's an Enfield sling sewn over canvas with raw edges.

Looking at the pictures posted above, you can see that the bag has the raw seams on the outside.
Either it's made this way by the costume department or it's a real bag turned inside out.

I like the first one...definite potential there!

I was going through my email this morning and this top showed up http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/product/clothes-top-camis/4112074069511.jsp#/

With a few tweaks it might be a decent option for those of us who are trying to keep sewing to a minimum.....and if you already sprung for the Po Zu shoes what's another $80?

I don't think so. I work in an Army Surplus Store, and have had Czech shoulder bags with straps like that (raw edges out) and about that width with the two layer look to them. I'll have to see if we have any around the store still...

Please do!

I don't expect to have a ton of trouble with this one, but I would love to see how it goes for you. I always think I'll just wing it, and then end up wishing I'd used a pattern LOL.

I *hope* that I've bought enough. My uncut piece measures 54 x 64. It looks right, but O may have to go back and buy some more from her just in case.

If it's going to be entirely self lined, this one piece will be cutting it close, I think.

Ok just got back from the company showing. Some things I noticed about this costume:

1. Each shoulder guard has 5 padded regions in it. Someone mentioned before these were like Sailor moon sleeves and you'd be right. They were enclosed all around.

2. It's not a traditional shawl collar. A shawl collar usually loops around and is seamed in the center back, then folded down to seam the shoulder and back regions. This one had a seam on the sides of her neck. I couldn't get a good shot of the back of her neck to see how that worked out, but I suspect the center-back piece extends all across to the shoulders and armholes anyway, so it's basically a standing collar in the front pieces and back, with everything connecting in the shoulder seams.

3. There is absolutely a seam in the front pieces. It goes up into the shoulder and not into the armpit. The New Look 6028 pattern is the closest starting point I've found, so I bought it.

The gas mask bags I saw at the Military Supply store were too small to be the bag. This is a fairly sizeable bag – the length of it is wider than the width of her back. Your guess of about 11x17 or 11x18 seems about right to me. Gas mask bags seem generally only about half that size.

I was wondering about the color, too. The strap looks brown, but the bag looks like a khaki, and in some of the pictures, a darker color on the bottom.

It also has some kind of square or circular pieces connecting the strap to the body of the bag. The other thing I noticed is the clip that closes it is the kind you have to pinch on either side to open. You can tell by the way her hand is it in one of the pictures. And it looks like there is only one closure strap off to one side. Kind of the way it is on her belt bag, but on the opposite side.

Wow, that Rebel Legion costume looks great. She doesn't have the front seams on the jacket though she got the collar really well. She did the pants in green. I was thinking they are a brownish grey. Does anyone have a definitive idea what color they are?

I translated what she says about her costume in the Rebel Legion Forum and was wondering about this:

- Gloves : I sewed a small strap that can detach (in the film they posted them to the beginning of the scene
and tied at the end when it tends saber)

I'm not sure how accurate a translation it is, and I don't understand what she means.
Where would there be a strap? On the lightsaber itself? On the gloves? Does anyone speak French?

She also says she used boiled wool for the jacket.

I had noticed that puckering on the gauntlets and wondered what it was. It seems strange that they would sew the two different fabrics together at the wrist. My first reaction when I saw them on screen was that they were felted. I wonder if the whole thing is felted and the two pieces were joined before felting them. I also wondered if the vest had been boiled or washed and dried at least once. Something about the texture of it makes me think that, but it could just be all the pictures I've seen are blurry.

Is anyone going to felt their herringbone wool fabric? I'm considering it before I go any further. I made my mock up last night, which I will post photos of later today, and I'm ready to start cutting my wool, but I'm really considering felting it first, as I think it will help the over all look!

Edit: I'm just going for it! I really feel as if the garment is felted! I'll let you guys know how it goes!

Okay, as I wait for the wool to dry (felting was a good call, so far it looks fantastic!) I've got some time to show you guys the mock up and tell you what I did so far.
So I ended up using a pattern I had on hand for my Mustafar Padme Burda Style 6958. I used the front of style A, and the back of style B, which for the most part worked really well! I did have to modify the back so the "upside down j" was the correct shape and depth. It took a few pieces of felt until I got it looking right. From there I just adjusted the whole thing to the shape I wanted on my dress form. I had my form set to my size before I got pregnant, as I want to be able to wear this in the fall. When I go to cut the actual fabric, I will still have to adjust the "J" to be lower, as you can see the shoulder pad I pinned on doesn't fall in quite the right spot. The collar will need some slight adjusting as well, and I want to make the shoulder wider to accommodate the pads, but overall, these are slight adjustments. For the preplum, I just eyeballed it, and it worked, wish I could be more specific! I haven't mocked the gauntlets yet, but I'll post photos when I do. Please excuse the look of the mock up, It's only pinned right now as I plan to use the pieces as my template. I hope that helps someone!!!

How necessary do you think it I'll be for the vest wool fabric to be self lined? Will it be crucial for the neccesaey stiffnes? Because 3 or so yards of $25/yard fabric won't break the bank as much as 6 yards would.

I think the proper weight is incredibly important for the right look, and to show off the quality of the fabric and workmanship. But maybe just lining the exposed areas, like the collar and interior of the front/peplum edges, would be enough - then line the rest in a cheaper fabric of the same weight and tone. Or even grey fusible interfacing for stiffness! But then I always lean towards getting creative with a budget than paying out the nose for perfect.

I picked up a thrift store coat today for $10 that I figure will work nicely, and it has tons of extra fabric to play with. The herringbone is considerably more prominent than I wanted, but I'm hoping that felting it will help the fibers blend and tone down the contrast.
