Re-make of "Dune"

I'm interested in the stillsuit wrist armor reusing the same (found item?look like moto glove parts) knuckle guards as the gloves.

But yeah man, that battle armor. And those uniforms!

Odd to make Dr. Kynes Chani's mom instead of her dad. But if that's the biggest problem I have with the movie, I'll still be well pleased. I wonder why they haven't officially announced who's playing Feyd? Unless he won't be in the first film... Same for the Emperor...

Yea, I had a similar thought. The main thing it probably means to me is that what seemed like a pretty hard line between some of the social roles between men and women in the books, will probably be relaxed in the films; which doesn't really change the story, it's just kind of trivia.

I don't remember where women rose to any sort of leadership roles in fremen society besides reverend mother type positions. and besides being the wife of a leader, and thus kind of his rock/foundation. Though I assume that since leadership was based on combat, the physical advantage men have over women in knife fights is probably the only real reason.

So, the only real reason I remember the Emperor showing up "early" in the other movies, and even in the book, is more so we could give a description of the navigators, and to give some context to the princes' written text entries in the book. They don't even HAVE to show the navigators in this movie if they don't want; and if they do want to show them, we can just get a shot of them on a star ship or something. The Emperor can go most of the book without being anything other than a name.

Feyd, though... unless this is being told with some sort of crazy Tarantino style leaping around the story, then Feyd has to show up in the first movie.

Duke Harkonen's whole plan for how to deal with Arakis revolves around him grooming Feyd, and prepping him to be a "savior" character for the populace.

Everything about this looks and sounds fantastic. I honestly think the last time I was this hyped for a movie was Jurassic Park when I was 7. December cannot come too soon.
Normally I owuld raise an eyebrow for genderbending Kynes but sod it, whatever. I don't really understand why they felt there were not enough strong females in Dune considering that it very much revolves around them but again, fine.
I had my skecpticism about Momoa, he's a rock and I always imagined Idaho as an elegant dancer-like warrior, but he looks great too.
My one and only wish is that Frank Klepacki was doing the score. Not a massive fan of Zimmer like most, and I think the score of the Dune games captured the atmosphere just perfectly.

Definitely. I also dig Leto's "tactical wakizashi".

So, it's funny, the other day I was actually thinking about how the "house" system in Dune almost seems to marry up more with tales of feudal Japan that I've seen (or at least stories I've seen set in those times); where in all parties were expected to act in the highest of honorable ways, and to act selflessly for the good of the emperor and the whole, while at the same time it was open knowledge that everyone was scheming and actively trying to depose the other great families/houses through any means necessary. Where something was really only a crime if you got caught.

So then I see that Japanese style swords are on their hip, and it just felt right to me.

Anyone that actually knows anything about Japanese history able to tell me if I'm thinking of how Japan operated at certain times, or if I've been watching too many cut rate revisionist edgy re-imaginings? lol

It's a general theme of feudal systems everywhere. In Europe, too, the nobles and knights were ostensibly loyal to their lord -- be it king or Pope or Holy Roman Emperor -- and sworn to defend and uphold them... While every minute that wasn't spent actively doing that was spent jockeying for power, prestige, and position.

I like that they got the eyes right this time around. I was hoping for a bit more... I dunno, detail of any kind for the Atreides uniforms. The stillsuits look like an unfortunate blend between Lynch and Sci-Fi interpretations. I do not like all the hangy-off and sticky-out bits that will get caught on things and catch sand like nobody's business. I do not like the very contemporary motocross knuckle guards, especially used as wrist protection (where I don't think there are any knuckles...), I had hoped the "turban" portions that I'd seen people describe were the hoods over the stillsuits' conformal head-cover, but they seem to be the head-covering itself. One thing I keep hoping for and that no one has done right. The only things that should be not covered by a stillsuit, which itself should be as sleek and body-hugging as a slightly bulky second skin, are the eyes and fingers. And then the desert cloak and other accessories over that. At least the ornithopters look better...

Well add the Sardaukar to the mix and you have all the reason to "swear loyalty" to the Emperor...:)

Well, we got two beauty shots of the battle armor. Which is not what I imagined at all, Villeneuve goes for a brutalist blunt style overall while I associated that more to the Harkonnen and the Atreides in my mind were more elegant. Almost like comparing the elven armors and weapons in LOTR to the human ones. But it's not a complaint, I like the look, it's just different to what I had in mind but I can live with it.

I'm actually surprised how little insider info is out on this movie. I've been googling for any morsel of news weekly and there's not a trailer or anything in sight. It works for me cuz it really gets my hype up but not sure about the bigger public who may not be familiar with Dune. I just really hope that it won't go down the BR2049 route where it's a critically acclaimed flop.

So from that picture of Zendaya above am I to believe they’re doing digital recoloring of eyes? I know nothing about Dune so it could be something massively important for the plot but that’s one of my most hated movie making choices.

Uh... yeah - that's kind of an important detail. Prolonged use of Spice turns the eyes blue. They did it in Lynch's film too, but at that time I believe it was done with rotoscoping.

you mean that they're doing it digitally, vs a full eye contact lens or something? Cause it's a pivotal plot point in the movie that the locals and those who survive in the desert long term have blue tinted eyes.
