Re: *** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here!

Hello fellow RPF members,

My name is Karl Sack and I live in Bradford, Ontario, Canada. Just 1hr north of Toronto. I have been married for 25 years next June and have 2 wonderful boys. Sean 17 and Luke 15. I am a Software Engineer by trade. I enjoy amateur radio, electronics, wood carving on my off hours.

What brought me to this wonderful forum is the SyFy show Warehouse 13. I immediately was taken in by the Farnsworth Communicator. I Googled "farnsworth communicator" and the rest is history. After reading the posts, I have started building one (actually two) and plan on making it work as a real communication device. Just from reading thru this forum, I know I will learn a great deal from everyone.

My brother-in-law, who lives in my basement, has taken over my garage with his resin model building hobby. I figured if I can't beat him, join him!! Now the WHOLE garage is OUR workshop. Do a search on ebay for "markarnoldca" and you'll find his H.P.Lovecraft work.

I have always been interested in things mechanical and electrical from a very young age. My father was an engineer and so I grew up in his workshop. I later went to Carleton University for Engineering and then transferred to Brock University to complete my Computer Science degree. I would like to share with you some of my precious “engineering” moments growing up.

***

I remember as a young boy of 5, sitting quietly next to my father as he was drafting away. I sat there in such amazement as he would use his sliderule to calculate numbers. That’s the same slide rule I have in a box with other memorabilia of my Dad's, such as a lapel pin given to him by the CEO of General Dynamics for assisting them with the design of their Stinger Rocket launcher.

When my Dad would work on weekends, I would go to “the shop” and help him make blueprints. To this day, the smell of ammonia brings back fond childhood memories. The shop was a magical place with a chem lab, a never ending supply of resin and fibre glass; overhead cranes on pulleys, machine shops with drill presses, lathes, sanders, etc., - all in one huge building!

***

I had a quick lesson at the age of 7 on how to read schematics, when I took all the tubes out of my Dad’s stereo one day. It was a miracle that I was not electrocuted before the age of 10. On the back of the stereo was a service panel which had a nice big red sign on it saying “Danger High Voltage”. I was only going to peek inside; really I was but the glow of the tubes intrigued me. I unplugged the power (at least I knew that much) and watched them go dark. I began to pull out the warm tubes one by one until they were all out. One thing I must say about my father was that he never got mad about me exploring new things. He came in the room, saw the tubes on the floor and kneeled down, picked up one of the tubes and showed me where it was from (in the schematics and on the chassis) and placed it back in. “Now, you do the rest!” he said. And I did as he watched. He took out the vacuum, cleaned up all the remaining dust bunnies and helped me put back the panel - pointing out the danger sign!

I don’t know whether it was my imagination or not but I thought the stereo sounded better some how, after that. The next day, my Dad brought home a box full of Sylvania tubes from work and a tube tester and asked me to test them all. There must have been at least 200 in the box and I had fun testing them all and found 8 duds!

***

As a young kid in high school, My firend and I built a Star Wars Storm Trooper costume out of vacuum formed plastic. We made the forms and I got several sheets of polyethylene from where I worked in the summer. It came with walkie-talkie in the headset and a red "laser" light shooting out the barrel of our rifle. I say "laser" here because laser pointers were not as free coming back then as they are now but it was smoky enough in the bars and looked really cool! We ended up winning first prize!

***

Later on when I worked as a Radar Technician, in the army, I found out that my Dad’s company was responsible for making the fibre glass radomes which went over the radar antennas to protect the gear from the elements. I remember my Dad bringing home black and white pictures of the installation tests up in the DEW line and noticed the antennas were the exact same Height Finder antennas that I worked on. What a small world. The tubes in the radar equipment always reminded me of my adventure with my Dad’s stereo. During the mid 1980’s, a lot of the radar stations were shutting down and there was going to be an influx of radar techs. So, in 1985 I; was honourably discharged from the army, got married, and started university all within a 4 month span. Talk about stress that year!

Feel free to email me anytime.

Cheers,
Karl

Re: *** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here!

Just a quick intro to the community. As a good friend of mine says, "my fandom is random..." I have been playing around at making props since I was a kid, and have built several lightsaber models, more than a few Lovecraft-inspired props, and many other little tchotchkes. I'll go ahead and attach a picture from this year's Halloween party- not my best work, but I wanted something easy.

Re: *** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here!

Hey everybody, my name is Toni Plutonij (Plutonij stands for Plutonium in Croatian, it's pronounced like Plutonium, but without that "um" in the end, if said correctly, Toni Plutonij should rhyme).
Missed last few open registrations, but now I'm here to stay!

I live in Croatia, Europe..It sucks to live here if you like to get stuff shipped from anywhere else in the World.
I'm really hardcore into Terminator stuff, biomechanical (well, mostly mechanical) and have a list of stuff I plan to get trough time..
I could go on and on about me, but don't want to bother you here and now..
In few words:
-Terminator
-Punk & Psychobilly
-All kinds of movies
-Tattoos

I'm glad to be here, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask, I'll gladly answer..
Now off to lurk the boards and get more familiar with this "finally a member" feeling!

Re: *** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here!

Hello everyone! I've been lurking for some time, and now am happy to be able to join! I'm interested in scifi props mostly, Alien, Blade Runner, etc etc. My collection is very small right now (just some replica toys and such).

Anyway, very glad to be here!

Re: *** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here!

Hey guys, my names Wayne and I live in Tasmania, Australia. Have been mainly into the collection of knives and swords the last two years, but one of my mates Taz is beginning to introduce me to his love of prop making. It seems pretty cool, but more than likely something I could never do. lol

Taz brought me a set of screen accurate Riddick Knives from the RPF a few months ago, Im in the process of filling and painting those in my spare time.

At the moment I'm working on an accurate 2003 remake of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre Leaherface Costume for the 2010 Supernova convention. Have already sourced an awesome silicone mask made by Addisson Moralle. In the process of finding an old two stroke chainsaw, thinking of disabling the blade so that I can safely use the prop when in costume (That way there will be loads of noise and smoke, yet no possibility of chopping my own arm off).

Re: *** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here!

What up! I was registered on this forum awhile back but got "booted" maybe for lack of posting. Anyhow, I'm on now! I'm a member of the 501st, central california garrison. One of the few & proud TX stormtroopers out there, out to inform the misinformed that I am NOT Darth Vader or a TIE pilot. And, yes I am a lil short to be a stormtrooper. Deal with it:lol.

Currently, I am working on my second set of Stormtrooper armor. An ATA set. I'll be sure to post up pics of my progress.

I'm excited to be a member on this forum. . . again!:thumbsup

Re: *** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here!

Hi all. Thanks for letting me in. I've been lurking for a while and it was clear from the first day that I had found my people.

My biggest project lately has been a full size, functional remote R2D2. That's been my first big foray into prop building since I was a kid.

I've been following all of the Star Wars and Alien(s) threads here in particular.

Re: *** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here!

Sorry that picture's so huge. I'll have to figure that out in the future. I forgot to mention that the droid is about 50% scratch built.

Re: *** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here!

Like most everyone else I've been lurking here for awhile. Certain props have always held an interest for me from movies such as Star Wars, Dr. Who, Ghostbusters, and the T.V. show Farscape. Currently the only thing I'd consider a prop would be my Boba helmet, But I'm working on a Ghostbuster PKE. My main love though has got to be the comic Green Lantern. Been sculpting custom action figures of various Green Lanterns for years. I recognize a few name from various Action figure sites I visit. Hello "Jack T Chance".

Re: *** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here!

Hi All!

I've been a Trekker for 20+ years and bought my first prop kit from Roddenberry.com (a Mark X Tricorder) about a month ago. I found your great site while combing the net for tips on building it. I've been dying to register so I could ask some of you expert prop builders for specific advice on the project.

I look forward to learning much from all of you!

Re: *** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here!

Hey All,

My names is Lou, I've been checking out the RPF for the last few years. Some of you know me from TDH.

Mostly a Star Wars fan, been trying to work on a few different things. I really want to get my mini Star Wars theater done, almost there. I have zero prop making skills, a little background in drawing and painting, but I am a fast learner and get by. I work in the public sector.

Here are my first ever life sized projects. They aren't bad for my first attempts. I am looking to redo them both. I did everything on Boba myself as far as painting, assembling, etc. I scratch built the shoes, jumpsuit, armor, belt, and bought a resin helmet, blaster kit, gauntlets, and jetpack. Also bought and modified a mannequin. I was not going for movie accurate, as you can clearly see, was on a tight budget at the time and new to the game. Boba cost me about $1200 or so when all said and done.

HIC was also scratch built with the exception of some very poor side panels, the face cast and hands. I have already started my second one, now I know what to do better. This one cost me about $400 in materials.

Looking forward to all the great resources here.

Re: *** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here!

Greetings everyone. I've been a huge fan of screen-used props and replicas (they sure are cheaper) for a long time but alas, only started acquiring the past few years. I was lucky enough to run across the RPF this year and through my Junkyard lurking, was able to deal with several RPF users - all with great results! I've dabbled with some prop making/weathering over the past year and I plan to step it up a few notches in 2010. I'll say one thing, building latex molds and pouring acrylic is MUCH harder than some of the tutorials make it look!

Anyway - here are a few shots of my "geek room". I like all things SciFibut as you can tell, I've really been into BSG recently :)

Hi All, new member happy to be here!

Hi everyone,

I just registered last night and am happy to finally be a member here! My name is Tyler. Some of you from the rebelscum forums will recognize my handle!

A little about me. I have a small original prop collection, and have just started dabbling in wanting to make my own prop replicas. I worked at ILM for 3 years on the Pirates of the caribbean sequels, Indy 4, Iron Man, and Star Trek. Lately I have been freelancing and did a large location job.

Looking forward to helping and learning where i can.

Thanks for having me :)

-Tyler
