“To make sure these items were as authentic as possible, we reviewed the film props from the Lucasfilm Archives to study size, reference details, capture 3D scans, and more in order to recreate them into collectible items,” Cody Hampton, senior manager of Brand Merchandising, said on the Disney Parks Blog. “We also try to anticipate features that fans would expect from these replicas, so we added a light up feature to the Sankara Stone, as well as the crystal skull.”I feel like Disney said this somewhere for all the Indy props and none of them are accurate, lol.
I don't think it explains the Sankara stones at all. I've shown in another thread (Your Indiana Jones Displays - Lets see 'em plus see post of mine above that one for the most obvious one) that all three Sankara stones that lit up in the movie had the white lines on them contrary to some beliefs (facing away in initial scene).“To make sure these items were as authentic as possible, we reviewed the film props from the Lucasfilm Archives to study size, reference details, capture 3D scans, and more in order to recreate them into collectible items,” Cody Hampton, senior manager of Brand Merchandising, said on the Disney Parks Blog. “We also try to anticipate features that fans would expect from these replicas, so we added a light up feature to the Sankara Stone, as well as the crystal skull.”
So that would explain why some of the props (the idol and the headpiece) look like the real ones, and why the Sankara stone and voodoo doll look the way they do. I think Disney is clearly trying to entice collectors while appealing to kids and casual collectors with stuff like “light up features”.
I agree that the Disney headpiece is nice, but let’s not kid ourselves that it’s cast from the original. Check out how many details are simply incorrect. (1) To start with, look at the shape: circular vs lumpy & semi-circular. (2) Little details are different, like the taper on the arches above the wings - see photos below. If this was cast from an original, why bother removing the taper there? It doesn’t really improve aesthetics at all. (3) Then, check out the original’s wings. Oftentimes, there is a channel between the two sides of a feather. There generally are no detailed carvings in that channel. However, the Disney version extends each carving detail through the center of each feather, and doesn’t really include a clean channel. These are just a few differences between the two. Some can be attributed to perhaps cleanup by Disney. But some of the differences can’t be attributed to clean up.Don’t know which versions you’re referring to; but supposedly the Disney headpiece was cast from the original prop.
The "BamBox" headpiece was produced by DarkMatter Props. The BamBox version has a solid red plastic crystal. Instead of a Topaz Swarovski crystal. This headpiece is egregiously cleaned up. Even the cherubs aren't cherubs anymore...The Bambox headpiece is WAY better and definitely has lineage to a production headpiece.
Fair enough. It is a licensed product and relatively good.Nitpicking aside, this is still one of the best headpieces I’ve seen, and I’m happy to have an official product.
We've already got a dozen+ recreations, some of which are very accurate to the original props. This one strikes me as a a more idealized version with symmetrical issues fixed. The "cherubs" look a bit messy on the original so cleaned up with detail or smudgy looking bits? I dunno. This headpiece is egregiously cleaned up. Even the cherubs aren't cherubs anymore...The Bambox headpiece is WAY better and definitely has lineage to a production headpiece.
The Bam Box versions have expanded quite a bit. They sell versions now with clear & reflective crystals as well as the real crystals and both medallions (IMAM & Bar) and two finishes (yellow gold and antique gold). The "BamBox" headpiece was produced by DarkMatter Props. This is the first I have heard of any "lineage to a production headpiece"... On their Etsy listing, they make no claims to being cast from the original screen used props... Only that they "Our Headpiece to the Staff of Ra is cast in metal and gold plated just like the originals." and "The Limited Numbered Collectors Edition - made in high quality metal and completely screen accurate to the originals as seen in the movie with your choice between the Raven Bar or Imam versions".
That said, the versions they sell on Etsy are very good especially for a price point of $80... And even better if they truly do have a lineage to an original...
The crystal color is off on the $80 version... but again, for $80, it's not worth the complaint... Their more expensive $210 Limited edition version rectifies that by using the correct Swarovski crystal.
Edit: Here is a photo of one of my BamBox / DarkMatter Headpieces... I have lightly weathered it to make the details pop... It originally came completely clean and shiny...

I don't know their origin, but that picture makes it clear to me it's probably not a resculpt or there would be more feather detail.View attachment 1616035
Here is my Dark Matter Props with a clear crystal. He started offering the new versions about a year ago. Much better than their old opaque resin crystal.
Headpiece of Ra cookies are next level. Amazing.I don't know their origin, but that picture makes it clear to me it's probably not a resculpt or there would be more feather detail.
I bought the red opaque one because it's a version I didn't have in any other version. It was also brand new, not aged and thus clean enough I felt safe using it to make my Staff of Ra cookie mold from (personal use only) so I can have Staff of Ra cookies at an Indy party.
