Speaking of the interior, I think it's quite interesting. The strangely shaped gold material looks to me like it might be leftover brass etched sheets from the Death Star II build. Does that seem possible?

I do wonder about the chip, though. It's a surface mount IC, and I sort of wonder how commonly available that type of package was in 1982-1983...

I have to agree with this. Looking at the 90s photos, its hard to tell either way how close to the surface it is. In the deleted scene, you're right it's super high. Where could it have gone!

Is this because fans and sabre-makers have been making the control boxes whatever height they wanted? Or did the sabre's control box in the film have different heights depending on the scene?

You’re not wrong.

It’s generally accepted so far that the Hero began its life as the Yuma. That control box had no rails or card just the box (aluminum or resin.... debated)
The ISYHCANL is about the same size base box but has a clamp card placed directly on top of the box, and brass rails on top of that. So it grew a bit there.

The MoM (Cave Build) kept the box, card, and brass rails, but seemingly needed extra height to house the electronics and faux circuit board which caused them to need an additional grey rail, which I recently posted my theory on. The cave build variant has the “tallest control box” as a result despite being the same base variant

Whenever my brass rails come in I’ll update a section at the top to explain all that with pictures

I mentioned photo etched brass parts in post #422, I guess y'all missed it! Here's what I said:

"..and here's another can of worms, anyone have ANY clue about the circuit board? Y'all think it was cut from one of the many calculators they had lying around, or something else?

And what are those little thin gold strips and bits at the forward end, on and around that chip, and what's that white crap on the chip??? In places the gold stuff looks like mesh. But it all reminds me of brass photo-etched model parts."

And regarding my question about the "stop" for the card, I was referring to this pic

I guess this photo was taken after the damage had been done? Though the bird's eye view here seems to show the rails pretty parallel with each other, I guess the "stop" may have broken off, being such a thin bit of material?

And yeah, I've also wondered about the LEDs not being visible on the inside of the box in this pic (the one above, I mean), yet in other shots they appear to protrude relatively far into the box cavity (in the pic below).

So if the overhead shot was taken circa 1996/1997 (according to Jason DeBord, who that pic comes from), and the pics taken at an angle are much newer (within the past couple years?), do you think that dressed-up circuit board could possibly have been removed from the box sometime in the intervening years? That could account for the appearance of it being much closer to the top of the box in the cut scene, and the appearance now (in pics) with the LEDs being visible and prominent.

I did see that but I think I was too distracted in that moment to jump on the train, sorry <xD. nkg’s comment was a good reminder
Although the idea that it was leftover scrap (or offcuts) from the Death Star 2 model is one of those “convenient sense” hypotheses I think worth exploring?
I think the DS2 closeups are floating around the boards somewhere. Although holy crap that’s a mess of detail go through

If my rail setup is close-to-canon the idea of it pushing forward and through is so easy. Even with a lot of glue they aren’t sturdy.
It would’ve taken one guy who didn’t know:

Curator: “see here look, the card slides forward.”
*Click click*
“Oh it’s stiff let me....”
*rams card through the front stops*
“See here is this nice detail”
Curator 2: “... dude your supposed to slide it *back*”

We definitely appreciate the interest and impatience. We are working diligently towards an update and prototype. Part of the hangup are some logistics and my own time and availability to finish off some of the minute details and wrap up the rest of the machining drawings.

Some personal business has eaten into my time to finish this stuff up but hoping the coming month will yield some free time to wrap up the model and drawings to get to prototyping stages.

As he mentioned, for the past few months Adam and I been honed into comparing notes on this lightsaber.
Consultation, debate, discussion, and comparisons generously provided by Roy of wannawanga has led us to incredibly and intimately similar variations on this lightsaber with a small amount of deviation.

We'll discuss more about those variations later.

I think it's also worth mentioning and applauding DaveP for his impressive work on his own Yuma/ISYHCANL lightsaber
