A lot of stuff like that that they are putting out now reminds me of the period between 94-99. There were all kinds of fan art being put up online and it was all kind of ridiculous lightsaber variations with blades coming out of every opening. I remember people making fun of that and someone made a lightsaber fork. The thing is there are no adults in charge any more and Disney/Lucasfilm are letting them do it for real.

Really? Can it get any more ridiculous?

What gets me about the saber guards is that there are still parts of the saber exposed where they come out. If a blade did slide down there, it would cut off the very things emitting the guards in the first place.

I'd rather see a physical guard, though as Ewan McGregor said, they didn't need them because they knew how to use their lightsabers. There are a handful of canon metals that will resist lightsaber blades, so there's no reason to not use them. At least Kylo Ren's lightsaber has a somewhat plausible, if silly, reason, in that it has to vent excess power from an unstable crystal.

Many of the lightsabers have a katana vibe, like Luke's, Obi-Wan's, and Qui-Gon's. I wonder if they function like small hand guards.

I highly suspect that portion is made of lightsaber resistance material. Particularly since that is where the blade emits.

So...what's more rare, lightsaber resistant metals or unstable Kyber crystals? Apparently not rare enough for the Jedi Survivor to find both to make his. I just personally think it looks like a gimmick. It's the equivalent of the Garden Weasel or that spray on hair stuff on the infomercials...in fact, I'm positive it was rejected on the Shark Tank and requires 3 easy installments of just $99 , but wait!! If you act now you can get two.. yes two for the price of one!! Just call the number on the screen, but hurry, time is running out.

Well unstable crystals, at least in Kylo's case, is fractured crystal. It happened when he tried to bleed it. And I would imagine that emitter or the inside of a lightsaber would need to be made of some sort material that can stand up to the blade. Or perhaps the magnetic field that contain the blade, offers some protection to the emitters.

In reality, when you have a game that allows you customize, appearance and you weapons. The "canonicity" is dubious. It's just gameplay mechanics. For instance, in my play through of Fallen Order, I changed my lightsaber every time I stopped at a planet. That wouldn't necessarily be "canon."

I'm not gonna pretend to understand what you are saying...lol, i respect your knowledge on the subject. I'm just old!!! Old minded...I thought the KOTOR and Jedi Academy lightsabers were just fine. The crossguard design makes no sense to me at all. lightsabers are deadly...period. They can slice through just about anything. Why in a duel would i want to have to worry about slicing myself inadvertently with side protrusions...making sure my hand placement on the saber was correct at all times? They are simply trying to be creative with coming up with their own thing but like all their other retcons, this one seems ridiculous in my opinion. It fits into their universe, just not mine...lol. BTW..i don'y mind Kylo's if it didn't have the side beams. I like the design of the pommel but it has i weird emitter. I wouldn't mind seeing that style in a thin neck, just not the crossguard.

Considering Mandalorians build entire armies decked out in lightsaber resistant beskar, and that beskar isn't even the only lightsaber resistant material in the galaxy (there's also cortosis, armorweave, Zillo beast scale, and others) I'd say the lightsaber crystal is the more difficult of the two to find. Though as Joek3rr points out, the blade is a customizable thing for players and not exactly canon.

For a while there I was like a Star Wars vacuum, sucking up everything and anything with Star Wars on it. And I've always loved the technical mumbo jumbo side of Star Wars. I blame the Incredible Cross-section and Essential Guides for that. So yeah I know a lot of useless facts, lol.

While I love the medieval vibe of Kylo's lightsaber. It just looks so cool. It would be so incredibly dangerous. Unnecessarily dangerous. That's why I dig that High Republic lightsaber I posted few comments ago. It combines the best worlds of a physical guard and guard made of small lightsaber blades.
